J u l y 2 0 1 8 P a g e 2 Pastor s Corner Dear Friends, When I first arrived at Benton UMC, the church leadership expressed their goal was to reach as many people for Jesus as possible. For a pastor who is a dreamer and a seeker of God s heart, this was exciting news for me to be part of a church that wanted all people to know Jesus. Everything the church leadership has explored has been to bring more people in to know Jesus. From the upgraded sound system, projector, and screen, to the blended service and everything in between. The church leadership has been exploring ways to think outside the box to reach a world for Christ. Attendance has been steady and at times, excitingly high. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to survey the congregation on your worship needs. Based off of the survey input that showed a strong desire to meet a wide range of worship needs, we are going to attempt a 9am Traditional Service, coffee fellowship from 10am-10:30am, and a 10:30-11:15 Contemporary Service. The people have spoken, but now this is where I need your help. The traditional service will start at 9am. You might know of someone who misses the hymns and would love to see them in church again. Please invite them to service and encourage them in their walk with Jesus. You might know friends who haven t attended church in many years or you might now feel inspired to reach out to others to come with you to church for the first time. Either way, if God has called you to this service, I need your help to reach as many people to join a worship service that will meet their spiritual needs. Sadly, it is hard to find an organ or piano player that knows how to play hymnal music. The last couple of years I have asked many people, but seldom get any volunteers. This means we will be looking at hymn videos unless someone else has another idea on how they can help lead worship. If you spot any good youtube videos of Hymns that you would like, please email those links to me or to Lorri. Better yet, if you feel called to sing to any traditional youtube videos with just the organ or piano in the background while the lyrics are on the screen as you lead worship, please let me know. I would love to have you lead worship. If there is a video that you notice in service that you really liked or didn t like, please let me know so we can explore having the best rotation of hymns.

J u l y 2 0 1 8 P a g e 3 Pastor s Corner The flow of this service will follow a traditional service format: welcome/announcements, prelude/entry of light, call to worship, opening prayer, opening hymn, welcome, joys/concerns, the lord s prayer, children s time (Bob Johnson), (Bob Johnson leading children s church), reading from the word, hymn of meditation, message, offering, closing hymn, carrying out of light, and charge/blessing.message, offering, closing hymn, carrying out of light, and charge/blessing. For the contemporary service or what has been referred to at times as the rock-n-praise service, this service will be uniquely different. This service will start at 10:30am. For those who live very busy lives and need to be out of church in under 45 minutes, then this is the service for you. However, you don t have to live a busy life to enjoy this service, but maybe you prefer the type of music you would hear on popular radio stations such as 102.5, 88.1, or 88.5. It is also for people who need charismatic worship, where the bible comes to life and there is endless grace for new faces who feel this style of worship will bring them closer to God. At this service you may see people clapping, flagging, dancing, lifting their hands in praise, or express Hallelujah because the Holy Spirt is moving in power. This service will also be unique in that it starts out with a call to worship video (3-6min), music (15min), welcome/greet (2min), scripture reading (2min), sermon (15-20min) and you are out of church around 45minutes unless you would like to stay and pray or to be prayed over, which we encourage you to stay and pray as long as you need to. As you can see from this flow of service, there will be no children s message, but there will be children s church where the children will leave after the welcome/greet. Noreen Brill will lead children s church for the contemporary service. If God calls you to this service, then I need your help getting the word out. Maybe you know people who are hurting, lost, or have given up on the church where God is calling you to pull them back in. Maybe you have musical talents and want to be part of the worship band. Maybe this is the service your friends have been longing for and can come enjoy with you, just as they are to experience endless grace.

J u l y 2 0 1 8 P a g e 4 Pastor s Corner Coffee fellowship will be from 10am-10:30am as way to connect the two services together through fellowship. We understand that not everyone can make fellowship, but for those who can or from time to time, it s a great way to stay connected as the body of Christ. We will continue with having our first Sunday of the month be communion and potluck, unless advertised otherwise, for both services. Potluck will be during the fellowship time gap of 10am-10:30am. I understand change can be difficult. However, at annual conference it was shared that the Methodist Church in Wisconsin is losing membership at 5% a year and Wisconsin is the top state for losses. Our efforts to promote change and being creative to reach people for Christ provides greater opportunity to grow, especially since the change was inspired by the people who participated in the survey. As a church we are blowing the church doors wide open and proclaiming that all are welcome at the feet of Jesus as we make room for different worship styles. Even through all our efforts we may eventually discover that we might have to go back to a blended service at 10am because we aren t reaching new faces for Jesus. I remain confident in the people of BentonUMC to offer people Jesus and invite new faces to come in to experience the love of Christ. There is nothing to fear when we are trying to reach more people for Jesus by helping them experience God in ways that they can relate to in worship. I am excited that the majority of you have felt called by God to see what God is going to do, but remember, new faces coming in requires faith in action. That means I need your help inviting others, getting the word out, and helping to grow the service God has led you to be part of. Together I remain confident that mountains will move and we can offer a church home for any and all. As in all the things we do, to God be the glory. Pastor Ed.
