LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Today s Readings John the Baptist This year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Faith Formation Now You Know Media: for your listening and learning, borrow The Art of Letting Go: Living the Wisdom of Saint Francis. Fr. Richard Rohr Inner Liberation from Ourselves, Cultural Liberation, Dogmatic Liberation, Personal Liberation, Spiritual Liberation, and Liberation into Mystery. Borrow this audio CD set from the Faith Formation office by contacting Phyllis Hamill-Little. Safe Environment Practices All volunteers who volunteer with minors and vulnerable adults must complete initial Essential Three credentials. This includes a live VIRTUS: Protecting God s Children for Adult session, sign a code of conduct and submit a criminal background check. Once these essential three are in place in one Catholic parish or school in the archdiocese, you do not need to repeat them. Your records may be shared, with your written consent, between parishes. If it has been more than three years since you completed the essential three, there is a process to update your training, background check and code of conduct. This is all done through your virtus.org user. Questions? Contact Phyllis Hamill-Little in the parish office or the safe environment coordinator at the location where you volunteer. Our parish website has a link to the safe environment website and directions for completing the essential three. Thank you for helping to protect our children and vulnerable adults. RCIA (Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults) Meets Wednesday evening at 6:30. All seekers welcome. Questions? Contact Phyllis Hamill-Little Community Events Minnesota Catholic Conference If you are interested in becoming a volunteer Parish Ambassador for the Minnesota Catholic Conference (MCC), please contact Lumen Christi parishioner, Lynn Varco, at rherbeck@mncatholic.org to learn more. The Parish Ambassador will support solidarity within Minnesota s Catholic community and have an interest in talking about civic responsibility from a non-partisan, faithbased perspective. The MCC is the public policy voice of the Catholic Church in Minnesota and advocates on a broad range of issues related to Catholic social teaching. You must decide, in life: either I will make bridges or I will make walls. Walls divide and hatred grows: when there is division, hatred grows. Bridges unite, and when there is a bridge hatred can go away, because I can hear the other and speak with the other."
