The Worship of God Welcome and Passing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Erica Whitaker Prelude Shelley Shumate God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens Dale Wood During the prelude, you are invited to make the transition from getting here to being here. Use this time to prepare for worship, and allow the Spirit to refresh you. Call to Worship Psalm 111 David Lindsay Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. Full of honor and majesty is the Lord s work, righteousness endures forever. The Lord has gained renown by wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful. The Lord provides food for those who fear God, ever mindful of the covenant. The Lord has shown people the power of the Lord s works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of the Lord s hands are faithful and just. They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. The Lord sent redemption to the people and has commanded the covenant forever. Holy and awesome is the Lord s name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. God s praise endures forever. 1

*Hymn of Praise Let All the World in Every Corner Sing Number 314 ALL THE WORLD Prayers of the People Sara Turpin Prayer of Confession All-knowing God, we are your children, but we have turned away from your wisdom and walked in our own ways. We have been foolish and failed to understand your will. Purge us from evil and fill us with your Spirit. Clear our minds from clutter that we may discern what is right and walk in your ways. Amen. Declaration of Forgiveness The Lord is gracious and merciful! God shows great and steadfast love to us through Jesus Christ, our bread of life. By his flesh and blood our sins are forgiven and we have eternal life. Amen. *Hymn of Prayer What a Friend We Have in Jesus Number 409 CONVERSE *Offertory Prayer (Please stand, if able, for the offertory prayer) Kathy Leichty Offertory Ave Maria Tom White Paul A. Scripture Reading Ephesians 5:15-20 Anna Mackey Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the Word of our Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Serving Erica Whitaker Anthem Simple Praise Chancel Choir Craig Cortney For a canvas of colors, for a concert of sound; for the unfolding seasons, the earth spinning round. For the birth of each sunrise, for the sky set ablaze; for these simple gifts, we give simply praise. Simple praise for the Giver, and thanks for the One who has given us breath and given His Son. To the Giver of blessings for all of our days, for these simple gifts, we give simple praise. For the lover of a mother, for the touch of a hand; for the deeper emotions we can't understand. For the lessons we learn from the trials we face; for the simple gifts, we give simple praise. The heart of the Giver, the hand of the One from whom every blessing of living has come; for measureless mercy and limitless grace, for these simple gifts we give simple praise. 3

Parents: We do. To the congregation: Do you join in covenant with these parents and with the help of other faith communities to love, teach, and encourage this child toward faith in Jesus Christ as Lord? Hymnology: Let All the World in Every Corner Sing George Herbert wrote this two-stanza poem as part of his The Temple (Cambridge, p. 45), a collection of verse which was published posthumously in 1633. This is one of two lyrics in the book which were originally title Antiphon. In the medieval Latin church, an antiphon was a short refrain which was sung before and after the chanting of a psalm. Herbert s poem preserved this form by beginning, ending, and separating the two stanzas with the words Let all the world in ev ry corner sing, My God and King. The title and format of Antiphon suggest that, unlike most of the poems in The Temple, Herbert intended for these stanzas to be sung.
