Baptism of Our Lord January 13, 2019 PRELUDE WELCOME Daquin Noel During the prelude, the congregation is invited into a time of silent prayer. *LUTHER S CATECHISM P: What is Baptism? C: Baptism is not water only, but it is water used together with God s Word and by His command. P: What is this Word? C: In Matthew 28 Our Lord Jesus Christ says: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. P: What benefits does God give in Baptism? C: In Baptism God forgives sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives everlasting salvation to all who believe what he has promised. P: What is God s promise? C: In Mark 16 Our Lord Jesus Christ says: He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. P: How can water do such great things? C: It is not water that does these things, but God s word with the water and our trust in this word. Water by itself is only water, but with the word of God it is a life-giving water which by grace gives the new birth through the Holy Spirit. St. Paul writes in Titus 3: He saved us...in virtue of His own mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by his Grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. The saving is sure. P: What does Baptism mean for your daily life? C: It means that our sinful self, with all its evil deeds and desires, should be drowned through daily repentance; and that day after day a new self should arise to live with God in righteousness and purity forever. 3

* RITE OF BAPTISMAL REMEMBRANCE P: A voice from heaven declared, You are my Son, my Beloved! C: In the name of the Father P: John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River and declared, I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. C: In the name of the Son P: The Spirit, descending from heaven like a dove, came upon him. C: In the name of the Holy Spirit P: With a splash of water and word of promises, we are cleansed and called children of God. We are gathered together to remember our baptism as we say C: In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen P: When you were baptized, the pastor spoke the same words and also made the sign of the cross on your forehead and on your heart, as God pulled on your heart and soul. C: Receive the sign of the cross as a sign that you have been redeemed by Christ, the crucified. Everyone make the sign of the cross on their forehead and heart. Parents do this for small children. P: We gather to remember that baptism is not just an event, but a way of life as we rejoice in the promises of baptism. We affirm that all of us are on a journey of faith that continues today and for the rest of our lives, for we are beloved children of God. C: Help us, Lord, to continue our journey with You and to live our lives rejoicing in our baptism. * OPENING HYMN Crashing Waters at Creation 455 * GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirt, be with you all. C: And also with you. *HYMN OF PRAISE Now the Feast 167 4

* PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Almighty God, you anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit and revealed him as your beloved Son. Keep all who are born of water and the Spirit faithful in your service, that we may rejoice to be called children of God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen ACCLAMATION This Little Light of Mine NOISY OFFERING 5

READING: Isaiah 43:1-7 1 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. 4 Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. 5 Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; 6 I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. Word of God, word of Life C: Thanks be to God. 6

PSALM: Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14 1 Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glo- ry and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due God s name; worship the Lord in the beau- ty of holiness. 3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is upon the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is a pow- erful voice; the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor. R 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; the Lord breaks the ce- dars of Lebanon; 6 the Lord makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord bursts forth in lightning flashes. 8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilder- ness of Kadesh. R 9 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the Lord all are crying, Glory! 10 The Lord sits enthroned a- bove the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for- evermore. 11 O Lord, give strength to your people; give them, O Lord, the bless- ings of peace. R 7

* GOSPEL ACCLAMATION * GOSPEL: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 P: The holy gospel according to Luke C: Glory to you, O Lord. 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. SERMON P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ * HYMN OF THE DAY When Jesus came to Jordan 305 * PRAYERS After each petition P: Lord in your Mercy C: Hear our Prayer. 8

* PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. We offer each other a sign of God s peace. OFFERING There Shall a Star Emanuel Choir * PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS P: We offer our gifts our time, our talent, and our treasure - to God, in thanksgiving for all that God has given us. * OFFERING PRAYER P: Together, let us pray... C: God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 9

* THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son; and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: * HOLY, HOLY 10

* EUCHARISTIC PRAYER * LORD'S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen * INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Come to the table. Feast on God s abundant life for you DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION All are welcome The sacrament is offered using the practice of intinction. Please dip the bread into either the red wine or white grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are offered on a special tray, along with contaminant-free glasses of wine and grape juice. WHAT DO LUTHERANS BELIEVE ABOUT BAPTISM? AN ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY January 20 at 9:15 and 11:15 in the Church Lounge Last fall, Pastor Paula asked members to write down some of their questions of faith and she will be using them as a foundation for a monthly adult education opportunity. Several people asked questions about what happens when a child dies before being baptized, who can be sponsors, and why baptisms shouldn t be private. Pastor Paula will respond to these and other questions about baptism.
