Pro-Life Jack Kearney You may have heard that a lot of abortion clinics in Texas are going to close because of new Texas laws. Just think of all the lives that will be saved. I ordered a copy of Blood Money, a new DVD on the abortion industry. I will be out of town most of October and hope to show the DVD sometime in November. Health Line Duane Oefinger, PGK Trichotillomania (Hair Pulling) - This month I am going to discuss a problem many have probably seen and maybe experience but didn t know had a name for it. If you or someone you know pulls out their hair or picks at their skin or skin you have Tricholillomania (Trich) and Skin Picking. There are millions of people who suffer from this. It is normal to do this but when it becomes obsessive, then it becomes a problem. Trichotillomania is an overwhelming urge to pull hair from your head, eyebrows or other parts of your body. When hair is pulled of the head it leaves bald spots. Victims of this disorder try very hard to hide the problem. Most of the time people are able to control it but occasionally it can overwhelm the person and cause psychological distress. Common symptoms include: a. A strong urge to pull the hair with a sense of relief after the hair is pulled out. b. Patchy bald spots on head and other parts of the body. c. A lack of or absence of eyelashes or eyebrows. d. Chewing or eating pulled out hair or playing with the pulled out hair. e. Rubbing pulled out hair across the lips or face. Some people are aware of their hair pulling and others are unaware they are doing it. Many people pull hair in private and try to hide it from others. For those who are aware of it, they may develop rituals around the process. An example of focused hair pulling is when you are frustrated or angry over something in your car or had an argument with someone and pull the hair out. Some people may do it unconsciously when in certain positions such as brushing their hair. Trich may be inherited and usually develops during the ages of 11 and 13. It usually stays with the person throughout their life. Clinicians report that children as young as 5 may develop hair pulling but the problem is mild and usually goes away without treatment. It is more common in females but is usually distributed among boys and girls when they are young. Often the problem is caused by depression, anxiety, tension, frustration, fatigue, obsessivecompulsive disorder, eating disorders, loneliness or other emotional related problems. Hair pulling often makes the person feel better and reinforces this behavior to maintain these positive feelings. Complications of Trichotillomania may include: a. Feelings of shame, embarrassment, feelings of low esteem, humiliation, depression, anxiety and withdrawing from friends and family. b. Avoidance of social situations because of hair loss. They may avoid swimming, haircuts, windy weather, and sports activities. They may wear wigs, comb/brush their
hair in ways to cover their bald spots or wear false eyelashes. Avoidance of intimate situations is generally avoided to prevent discovery of their problem. c. Skin damage caused by constant hair pulling can cause skin infections, scarring, or scrapes/abrasions. d. Eating the hair pulled can lead to the development of large hairballs, similar to the hairballs animals have. This can lead to hair loss, vomiting, intestinal obstructions and rarely death. Treatment is limited at this time. It is focused primarily on psychotherapy. Habit reversal training attempts to help the person realize situations where the behavior will occur and substitute another behavior instead. An example is clenching your fists for a period of time to stop the urge or redirect the hand away from the hair to the ear. Other therapies are used and should be done under the treatment of a qualified medical therapist. Medications may also be used to assist in the therapy. Support groups are also available. The Trichotillomania Learning Center is a good resource at trich.org. Next month I will write about Skin Picking, a disorder often associated with Trichotillomania. Ladies Auxiliary Georgia Miller The next Ladies Auxiliary meeting will be on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 7:30 PM in the meeting room at the hall. All KC ladies are cordially invited to attend. Council/Family Mark Reljac The Traditional Annual KC Council #2813 Picnic will be held on Saturday afternoon, October 5th. Hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken will be grilled by Tony Zamora, Ramon Estrada and Ray Ramos and their crew. The meal will not be served until 4:00 PM. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate with us this year so we can have the picnic outdoors. I want to thank Tony Zamora for grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for the September Family Night. I also want to thank Ernest Reid, who was originally set to host kitchen duties for September, but the ongoing kitchen and bar construction prevented him from cooking a pork loin. We will set another date for Ernest in the future. Thanks to the Zamora, Lopez, Bibbs and
Ramos families for setting a football-themed Family Night in the north hall on such short notice. Everyone enjoyed it tremendously.
