Welcome to Trinity Lutheran Church! Please sign the red Worship Witness booklet to record your attendance with us this day, and indicate how many are communing. Then pass the booklet to the worshipers beside you in your row. If you are a guest, name tags are available for you to wear---we would be delighted to greet you by name. Hearing assistance devices and large print bulletins are available from an usher. about today s service At harvest time we join the psalmist in offering thanksgiving to God: You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty. We are grateful for the abundance of the good things of God s creation. Paul reminds us that our thanksgiving overflows into generosity. As the body of Christ in the world, we give ourselves away as bread for the hungry. [Sit] + Word + President Grover Cleveland s 1893 Thanksgiving Proclamation First Reading Deuteronomy 8:7-18 Times of abundance tempt us to forget the Lord and rely on our own power and resources. But the Lord is the one who took Israel out of Egypt, led and fed them in the wilderness, brought them into the land, and gave them power to be productive. To thank this God is to remember and proclaim God s deeds. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9 a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. 10 You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you. 11 Take care that you do not forget the Lord your God, by failing to keep his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am commanding you today. 12 When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, 14 then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, 16 and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. 17 Do not say to yourself, My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth. 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today. L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. [Stand] page 4

Alleluia Gospel Acclamation P: The holy gospel according to St. Luke, the 17 th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Reading Luke 17:11-19 A Samaritan leper becomes a model for thanksgiving. He does not take for granted the kindness shown to him but takes time to thank Jesus and to glorify God. 11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13 they called out, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! 14 When he saw them, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were made clean. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. 16 He prostrated himself at Jesus feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus asked, Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18 Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? 19 Then he said to him, Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well. P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. [Sit] Sermon: Promised Land Pastor Jack M. Horner page 5

[Stand] Hymn of the Day No. 689: Praise and Thanksgiving BUNNESAN Prayers of Intercession Each petition ends: P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. + Meal + Peace P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. [Sit] Offering Optional methods of giving: text an amount to 717-963-2281 (be sure to use a $ ); use the Giving Station in the Gathering Space to donate by credit card. Worship Witness: (Please sign booklet and return to center aisle.) Anthem: The Heavens are Declaring (Psalm 19) L. V. Beethoven The heavens are declaring the Lord s endless glory, through all the earth His praise is found. The seas reecho the marvelous story. O man, repeat that glorious sound. The starry host He orders and measures, He fills the morning s golden springs: He wakes the sun from its night curtained slumbers, O man adore the King of Kings. What power and splendor and wisdom and order in nature s mighty plan unrolled! Through space and time to infinity s border, what wonders vast and manifold. The earth is His and the heavens o er it bending, the maker in His works behold! He is, and will be, through ages unending, a God of strength and love untold. Chancel Choir [Stand] page 6

Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. page 8

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. The Lord s Prayer C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
