Wellesley Village Church Congregational United Church of Christ August 6, 2017 10:00am Ecumenical Worship There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God of all, who is above all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4: 4-6

Welcome to Wellesley Village Church As an Open & Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ Whoever you are, wherever you are on the journey of life and faith, we are delighted you are here! We Welcome All We extend a welcome as broad as the outstretched arms of God, who calls us together to pray, sing, and rejoice in God s glorious presence. Today, we especially welcome all our siblings in Christ at this, the first ecumenical worship service of the summer. We welcome children to participate fully in worship. Besides worshipping in the pew, children are invited to visit and use the Pray Ground in the transept nearest the pulpit. Childcare is also available in the Family Worship Room, located through the door to the left of the piano. We Value Community Visitors, we want to help you connect with our community. Please let us know you are here and how to contact you by using the welcome book or pew pads. Questions about our life together are always welcome, or find information on our website. God Calls You By Name, and So Do We Please wear a nametag; temporary stickers are available and you may request a permanent nametag anytime. We Like to Linger Please stay for refreshments and conversation in Village Common; ask a neighbor to show you the way!

August 6, 2017 PRELUDE ORDER OF WORSHIP Hymns can be found in the New Century Hymnal (black). *Please stand as you are able. 10:00AM RINGING OF THE BELL & LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE The bell is rung three times to attune us to the presence of the Triune God. WELCOME Liz Garrigan-Byerly RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 99 adapted) One: The Lord rules and the nations shake; Two: God s mercy flows and the earth trembles with awe. All: Holy is your name, O God, and great are your works! One: Let all people praise you, Mighty King, lover of justice; Two: Let all people praise you, Sovereign God, architect of equity. All: Holy is your name, O God, and great are your works! One: We gather, as the faithful have done in every generation, to worship you and seek your guidance. Two: Moses was your priest, and Elijah your prophet. All: They cried to you and you answered them. One: You spoke, on a mountain, in a still small voice, and they kept your decrees. Two: You forgave them and returned them to your ways of righteousness. All: Holy is your name, O God, and great are your works! One: Let all people magnify the Lord, our God! Two: Let all people praise you! All: Holy is your name, O God, and great are your works! *OPENING HYMN NO. 276 Holy God, We Praise Your Name GROSSER GOTT PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy God, even as we praise you with our words and music, we know that we do not always praise you with our lives. We confess that we extol our own works, proclaim our own righteousness, and honor earthly gods. We confess that we seek your guidance only when it suits us and follow in your ways of justice only when it benefits us. Forgive us, O God, as you forgave our ancestors, and return us to your ways of righteousness. (silent prayer)

Our Church Covenant We are banded together as a Christian Church to maintain the worship of God, to proclaim the gospel of Christ, to develop in all people a consciousness of their relations and duties to God and to each other, and to inspire them with love for truth, passion for righteousness, and enthusiasm for service. To this end we pledge our loyalty to Christ and covenant with each other to express God s spirit in our individual and corporate life; to live together as Christians and to submit ourselves to the government of this Church, working, giving, praying for its increase, its purity, its peace, and seeking in every way to make it a power for the building up of the kingdom of God.
