CWL President: (small part that can be filled by the master of ceremonies for the banquet) Welcome to our April Sacred Heart CWL meeting ladies. Please take a moment to chat while we finish setting up. If you haven t already picked up your agendas and newsletters please let Somebody know and she ll get them to you. All the characters hold up their hands and wave for agendas. Somebody hands out the papers (scripts) What a mess in the church kitchen! I dropped my cake off in the kitchen and couldn t believe how messy it was!! Even at my age I can keep a kitchen cleaner than that! Why I could lick that place into shape in no time. A little old fashioned elbow grease and some Bon Ami could do wonders! Estelle: I know Eunice I was shocked too. I could hardly find a place to set up the coffee pot for tonight. In my day a woman knew how to look after her kitchen and we kept this church kitchen spotless!! I m not sure, but I think there is something alive in that refrigerator. I swear something tried to bite me!! We mustn t be the only ones that think so Estelle. The newsletter says that they need helpers to clean the church kitchen. They are planning a cleaning bee for Saturday morning. Estelle: Well I sure hope they find Somebody to clean that kitchen. Yes, Somebody needs to volunteer and get in there to clean. Somebody writes clean church kitchen on the calendar and starts using the mop and pail and the tea towel and dishes. Gertrude: Oh my,. Our Lady of Victory Camp has a notice in the newsletter. I have such fond memories of my kids going to camp every summer. They had such a good time and they loved the food. Bunny: My kids went there too and just loved the camp. They especially liked the home made cookies they got for snacks. It must have taken a lot of cookies to keep those kids full all summer. What s the notice about Gertrude? Page 2 of 9

Gertrude: They are asking for volunteers to make cookies for the camp this summer. They need them dropped off at the church by Tuesday. My Betty used to love chocolate chip cookies, of course now she worries about her weight and eats like a bird. Even my husband Bill doesn t eat them like he used to. Bunny: I know, I have all these great recipes that the kids loved, but no one to bake them for now. They aren t even that hard to make. Why I even managed to bake cookies when I was working full time and the kids were still at home. Now the kids are in Ottawa and I ve given up trying to mail cookies or anything to them. Their Christmas gifts didn t get there until darn near Valentine s Day. Gertrude: Yes, cookies are so quick to throw together, we ll I just hope Somebody gets some cookies made for Our Lady of Victory Camp. I heard that last year they had to buy cookies. Bunny: Bought cookies! Yech! Somebody had certainly better get busy. Somebody starts stirring a big mixing bowl and gets out cookie sheets, writes on calendar cookies Tuesday. Jennifer: Hey, Megan have you seen that new neighbour of mine? You mean that really, really pregnant one that moved in next door to you? Jennifer: That s the one. She had twins! I ve never seen anyone look so tired and I can hear the twins crying at all hours. It was bad enough when mine were babies and I had one crying baby, but two must really run you ragged. Does her husband help out? Men these days seem to pitch in a lot more than even our husbands did. Jennifer: I suppose he must when he s home, but I think he works in the patch and seems to be away an awful lot. I was lucky I had a neighbour that would just pop over and watch the kids for me while I got a short nap. She was an angel and I don t know how I would have managed without her when Madison was teething and when all three kids got chicken pox at once. She would bring dinner over for all of us and then stay and do the dishes. Page 3 of 9

Jennifer: Yes, I know what you mean. My mom lived two blocks over and Dad used to tease that she should just move in with me. I wonder if that poor girl has anyone to help her? They moved here from Saskatchewan so I doubt there s much family nearby. Jennifer: Yes, Somebody should give her a hand. Yeah, Somebody should be helping her. Somebody suddenly has two small babies in her arms as she tries to make cookies and do dishes. Jennifer: Estelle: What did you say her name was? I don t remember, I haven t really gotten to know her. Are you going to join the spring bowling league again Eunice? I was thinking about it. We had such a good time last season. I think Adelaide will come and then we just need one more for our team. Estelle: Well, I know that Beatrice wants to come, but since Harold passed she doesn t get around much. He always did the driving you know. I m so glad that I kept my driving up or I d have been in a real pickle when John was in hospital all those months. You hate to keep asking for rides. And now he s gone, well I just couldn t sit at home all day. So its settled then, we ll ask Adelaide and do you think we should ask Beatrice? I mean surely Somebody could give her a ride to the bowling alley. Estelle: Come to think about it I don t think she s made it to the CWL meetings lately either. Somebody needs to give her a ride I guess. Somebody writes drive Beatrice to bowling on the calendar along with drive Beatrice to CWL meeting. Puts on and takes off coat and hat. Goes back to doing all the other things. in school. Jennifer: Well, it will sure be nice to have my last child in school all day in the fall. My baby Yes, what are you going to do with yourself all day with Ethan in grade one? Page 4 of 9

I don t know, Derrick doesn t really want me to start back to work. I loved teaching, but I m not sure I really want to go back full time and subbing makes organizing before and after child care so difficult. I guess I could always take another exercise class or something. Jennifer: I know what you mean about the child care. If I didn t have Somebody to take mine I d never manage my part time job. Did you read the school bulletin they sent home yesterday? Somebody writes Jennifer s kids on the calendar on Thursday and Friday and keeps juggling everything else.. I did. The reading program sounds really good. Kids who lag behind in reading do so much better when they get some one on one help. I sure hope they get enough volunteers to come forward to help with the program. What a difference it makes to a child to have a reading buddy. Jennifer: Yes, I know it sure helped my Susan. That was when my husband was going to physiotherapy after his accident and I was working full time. I just didn t have the time to help her as much as I wanted to. Her reading buddy was a retired teacher who gave her so much encouragement. Surely Somebody will volunteer, its only an hour twice a week. Somebody writes reading program on the calendar and juggles a child s book with the two babies cookie sheets mop etc. Looks at watch puts on coat and hat takes them off again and keeps working. Gertrude: I see in the bulletin they need ushers for the nine o clock service. Didn t you used to do that Eunice? I did, I m not sure why I stopped. They always seem to be short people when I go at nine. You always see the same people over and over. I wonder what happens when they take a holiday? You d think people could figure out how to get themselves seated, but I guess the ushers are needed for the collection too. Gertrude: Is it a hard job to do? No, not really and when you have enough people no one has to do it too often. Somebody should volunteer. Somebody writes usher 9:00 am on calendar. Goes back to juggling everything. Page 5 of 9

Gertrude: I see they need Eucharistic ministers for the 11 0 clock service. I used to do that. Have you ever been Eucharistic minister Eunice? No, but I always go to the 9 o clock service. Don t you usually go to the 11 o clock? Gertrude: I do, it just suits me better. They sure scramble some weeks to get enough help. Somebody should volunteer. Somebody writes Eucharistic minister at 11:00 AM on calendar and keeps doing everything else. I see they still haven t found a pianist for the 7 o clock service. Bunny: Yes they sure need a lot of volunteers at the church. I feel so bad about not being available a lot of the time because of my part time job. We really need a pianist at 7 o clock. Bunny: You usually go to the 7 O clock Bunny? Yes, that s when my family goes and we all love music. Jennifer: You are all so musical in your family Bunny. Your husband plays the guitar and don t your kids play the violin? And I ve heard you play the piano, you are fabulous. Bunny: Why thank you, you must have heard me playing for the Youth Group s sing a long. Let s hope Somebody volunteers soon for the 7 o clock service so we can have accompaniment again. It just makes the singing so much better. Somebody writes play piano at 7:00 Pm on the calendar and keeps juggling. Jennifer: What group are we fund raising for with the muffin sale this weekend? I ve lost track of which group gets the proceeds for April. Gertrude: I think it s for the People s Place this month. They need volunteers to sell muffins as well as bake them. I just never seem to get around to making them and I hate selling stuff, I d rather sit with my husband. Muffins are so much easier than pies I m sure Somebody will bake some for them. Somebody takes out muffin tins and starts putting in muffin papers etc. Bunny: I hope they get enough volunteers, Somebody will do it I m sure. Page 6 of 9

Somebody tries to write sell muffins on the calendar and can t quite figure out how, and keeps scratching it out. How is the CWL knitting project going? Are they getting enough afghans for the People s Place? Jennifer: Speaking of knitting, I remember hearing a story about you Eunice. Is it really true that you knitted a cozy for your husband s car when you were first married and couldn t afford a garage? Estelle: That s right; she knitted a cover for her husband s Edsell. Oh you two! I did not make a cover for the car, but I did make knitted seat covers for it. George got such a deal on that old car, but the seat covers had been ruined by the first owner s dog. So I bought the nicest shade of green yarn and made some seat covers. I knit them three times before I finally got them to fit. What a job! The worst part was that I had to buy a green coat so I didn t look like I d rolled in the grass every time I rode in it. Gertrude: I d have loved to have seen them Eunice. The last time I tried to knit anything I was in high school and tried to make a knit bikini. The bottom looked like a giant diaper and there was way more me than could safely fit into the triangle top pieces. Thank goodness I never tried to actually wear the thing. You are quite the knitter too aren t you Estelle. I remember the lovely afghan you knit for my mother s birthday when she turned 80. It was so warm and light and she used it all the time in the nursing home. Well let s hope Somebody will help with the afghans for the People s Place. Somebody takes out knitting needles and yarn and tries to knit while juggling everything else. Bunny: I can t tell you how glad I am to be only working part time now. I was a little upset when they changed my hours, but I have Wednesday s off and every weekend. Gertrude: That s great Bunny we ll have to do something together on your Wednesdays off. Looks like they still haven t found enough volunteers to help with services at the Pines Lodge on Wednesday mornings. I heard they still need two people for the third Wednesday of the month. I hope Somebody volunteers. Page 7 of 9

Somebody writes Pines Lodge on the calendar and puts on her coat and hat and then takes it off and keeps juggling. Jennifer: I think it would be easier to get volunteers if the phoning committee called people more often. But I guess they need volunteers too. My husband teases me that I should have a telephone attached permanently to my hand. I seem to like talking on it so much. That s the kind of person they need on the phone committee, comfortable on the phone. I m sure Somebody will volunteer. Somebody picks up a telephone and starts dialing while doing everything else. Gertrude: Have they found a volunteer to be the Spiritual Convenor? How hard can it be to do the spiritual reflection once a month? I know they have lots of resource materials. Bunny: Yeah they ve been asking for a volunteer at the last three meetings. Somebody will step up I m sure. Somebody makes the sign of the cross and acts like she is praying and keeps doing everything else. You know it just seems like the same people do everything, haven t most of the people on the executive done it since Noah built the ark? Somebody holds up scroll with Dummies Guide to Ark Building written on it. Jennifer: You re right. I wonder why there are never any new faces? Hmm looks like they need a secretary as well as a spiritual convenor. Somebody needs to volunteer. Somebody picks up a pen and paper and starts writing. Estelle: They are short of sponsors again for the RCIA. Somebody should volunteer. You went to RCIA didn t you Megan? Somebody writes RCIA on the calendar. Yes I did Estelle. Mary Brown was my sponsor and she was so wonderful. It makes such a difference to have someone to journey with at RCIA. I haven t talked to her since forever. I wonder how she is doing? Page 8 of 9

Mary Brown? Lovely woman! She s in the hospital recovering from a stroke. She loves to get visitors. It really helps to pass the days while she works on her rehab. She is so lucky that she didn t lose the ability to talk, but she is struggling to get mobile again. I heard that she loves to go to the chapel sing-a-long, but can t always get someone to push her wheel chair there. They just don t have enough volunteers at the hospital. Well I sure hope Somebody will get Mary to the chapel at least once a week. Somebody writes visit Mary on the calendar. Estelle: Gertrude: Shh!! I think the president is saying something. What did she say? I think she said Somebody died. Somebody gasps and does a theatrical death scene and lands on top of the table. She holds a lily in her folded hands. Bunny: Gertrude: Bunny: Somebody died? Yes and now they want us to practice the CWL honour guard. Well Somebody better hand out the sashes. Somebody s hand reaches down and brings up a CWL sash. THE END Page 9 of 9
