February 2018 the Cedar Chips Pastor s Corner I don t know about you but I can smell spring when I smell the rain. I am looking forward to seeing crocuses and daffodils pop up from the ground. My coffee tasted better with the morning sun shining and the little birds chirping on the tree in my front yard. The colorful spring flowers blooming would even make my morning more grandeur. I am ready to feel warm sun and also ready to once again walking through Lenten path for self-reexamination. The first day of Lent Ash Wednesday this year is on February 14 th. Yes, and many are tossing back and forth Valentine s Day... Ash Wednesday... Valentine s Day... Ash Wednesday. Both far extreme occasions fall on the same day: one is more a love and happy day while the other is more a self-searching day using ashes to remind ourselves what we were from and where we are going. Lenten season is 40 days before the resurrection day not counting Sundays. The church gives every Christian an opportunity to prepare oneself on the journey to the cross and to celebrate the love of God who sent Jesus Christ to die and live for the world. Now we see that we can truly combine and humbly celebrate Valentine s Day and Ash Wednesday together with gratitude for God s unconditional love and grace. We love because God first loved us. We give God thanks for loving us. We give God thanks for our lives and callings. Let s walk every day like this: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22: 37-39 May the Lord God help us on our walk. God is Good! Life is Precious! Signed Pastor Kris Our Vision Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church seeks to glorify God through nurturing spiritual growth, developing faithful discipleship, and serving our community. We were on the way out the door before I remembered I needed something for the Valentine party at Sunday school.

Tithing The Widow s Offering Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything all she had to live on. - Mark 12:41-44 (NIV) I never would have been able to tithe the first million dollars I ever made if I had not tithed my first salary, which was $1.50 per week. - John D. Rockefeller, Sr. (1839-1937) Excerpt from Tithing Is More Than the Number Ten - A Sermon by Albert C. Winn - Did you ever see a ship launched? There she sits on the dry land, shored up by beams, perfectly safe, looking altogether out of place and utterly useless. Then the beams are removed and the champagne is broken across her bow. And, very slowly at first, but gathering speed and momentum she slides down the ways until she splashes into the water. And there is a sort of a shudder, and she rights herself. Then she s afloat. She is where she belongs. She s beautiful and useful, and terribly exciting. That is what happens when a Christian, including a minister or a presbytery stewardship chairperson, or synod stewardship chairperson, or staff person when a Christian decides to launch out and begin to live by what we have called the deeply imbedded principles of tithing. Of course, I hope we raise the budget next year, the general assembly s budget, the synod s budget, the presbytery s budget, and the local church budget from which all the others come. But that is not a matter of eternal importance. What is eternally important is how many of our people, and how many of you this year, will take the risk and move down the ways of their lives until splash they are afloat where they belong, on the broad adventurous ocean of the love and mercy of God 4
