Summer Rolls On by Father Michael There are times when all of us find ourselves dealing with the ups and downs of life. Two weeks ago we experienced our annual Vacation Bible School. It is a highenergy, non-stop week of activities involving almost two hundred children and two dozen adults. There was great joy and excitement throughout the week. Woven into the happiness of these days, I experienced a wave of difficult situations; seven wakes and funerals (4 in the parish and 3 outside). There were moments of great delight and moments of great sadness. One moment I was being pumped up, the next being brought down. Without a foundation in the Lord, experiences like this would be difficult to endure. In times like these, it is our prayer alone that keeps us on track. I found great strength in quiet contemplation, and somehow I was given the gift of peace despite the whirlwind of emotions. I enjoy working outdoors during the summer. Not so much in creating and nurturing a vegetable or flower garden, but rather trimming trees and uncovering areas that have become overgrown with weeds and other plants. There is a sidewalk on Nichols Road that goes between my driveway and the church. Slowly over the years the weeds have covered the walkway, and the branches have extended further and further out towards the street. This required anyone using that section of the path to walk on the curb like a balance beam or detour into the road. I spent a few hours fighting back the persistent branches and weeds, and I have reclaimed the sidewalk for any pedestrians wandering by. This was my bit of community service for the week. I know we have an insufficient number of handicapped parking spaces, and we are working on a plan to address that. But until we resolve it, please be mindful of where you park. Cars that park in the driveway and circle can really create a safety hazard to other motorists and pedestrians. In particular, if you are able bodied, please find a proper parking space. Creatively making your own place in a traffic lane is becoming problematic. Please consider if the location of your car would interfere with an ambulance or first responder coming to an emergency. Try to join us on Thursday evening at 7:00 for Evening Prayer on the Lawn. Our guest speaker is Daniel Emerson. He is a young man from the parish who spent a year doing mission work in Florida. I m sure he will include part of his experiences of working with immigrant laborers in his reflection. More information about the evening is in today s bulletin. The Bread and Wine for the week July 19th-25th, have been donated in loving memory of Matthew Falcone by Lisa & Matty Rizzo. 3

VIRTUS PROGRAM VIRTUS TRAINING PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN This program is designed to: 1. increase adults awareness of the scope of child sexual abuse, 2. show adults what and how to teach our children about sexual abuse, 3. help adults recognize the warning signs of abuse, 4. teach appropriate ways to respond to suspicious behavior, 5. empower adults with specific steps to prevent child sexual abuse. While VIRTUS training is a requirement for all parish volunteers, the Pastoral Team encourages all parents, grandparents, and adults who have children in their lives, to participate in this informative program. A new session of Protecting God s Children will be held at Holy Cross on: Tuesday, August 4, 2015, 6:30 9:00 PM Please note: The number of participants is limited to 20, and on-line pre-registration is required. To do this, go to www.virtus.org, click on the yellow tab labeled Registration, and follow the directions. The name of our organization is Diocese of Rockville Centre. Our center is Holy Cross RCC (Nesconset). If you are unable to register on-line, or if you have any questions, please call Jude at 265-2200 x 16. But Jesus called the children to Him and said, Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Kingdom of God belongs. Luke 18: 16 4

EVENING PRAYER Evening Prayer on the Lawn Our next gathering is this Thursday, July 23 @7:00 PM on the lawn of the Parish House. Our prayer time will be followed with hospitality. Could you bring a summer treat or dessert? July 23 - Those whose last name begins with M-Z are asked to bring a snack. July 30 The Parish will provide the snack. The parish will provide beverages each night. There will be some seating available, but it would be helpful if you could bring a lawn chair. If possible, please park in the main parking lot and take the path through the woods, past the Community Garden to the house. For those who would find the walk difficult, there is limited parking at the house. (Use the driveway at #85 Nichols Road.)
