An Advent Pilgrimage in the Footsteps of Jesus Led by The Revd Dr Rob Marshall Writer, Broadcaster & Parish Priest of St John s Digswell 4th - 11th December 2017 - The official and preferred Pilgrimage partner for the Diocese of Jerusalem - Coopersale Hall Farm, Epping, CM16 7PE, England Tel: 01992 576 065 Email: info@lightline.org.uk web:www.lightline.org.uk

A pilgrimage to the Holy Land I am pleased to offer this special tour which is both a pilgrimage and an opportunity to meet and engage with local Christians, to heighten awareness of their struggles and to encourage the work of The Friends of the Holy Land as we seek to support the Christians of the Holy Land. You will return home with a completely new understanding of your faith. Come and enjoy the beauty and spirituality of the Holy Land, as we explore the principal sites of Jesus life and ministry. Lightline Pilgrimages has a policy of supporting the resident Christian communities of Palestine and Israel through its work wherever possible. All the services we will be contracting on your behalf will be with Christian companies and individuals, thus providing them with direct material benefit from your visit. We are all convinced of the vital importance for a living faith of the necessity of going, seeing, and then telling the world the stories of the Holy Land, both past and present. As with all Lightline Tours they are inclusive and based at carefully selected hotel and guest houses with good state licensed guides and the latest coaches. All costs are clearly l aid out on the back of this brochure and there are no hidden extras. I look forward to the pleasure of your company on this great journey of faith and discovery. As Jesus said, Come and See. Rob Marshall

Day 1, Monday 4th December Journeying to the Holy Land We meet at London Luton Airport for our non-stop morning flight to Tel Aviv. On arrival we will be met by our guide and driven north to Galilee and our hotel by the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Day 2, Tuesday 5th December Revelation and Annunciation After breakfast we begin our pilgrimage by leaving our hotel and driving to the foot of Mount Tabor and then transfer to small vans to visit the summit, traditionally associated with the Transfiguration, to spend time on the summit overlooking the wonderful views of the Jezreel Valley (the plains of Armageddon). We then drive to Cana, the site of Jesus first sign according to the Fourth Gospel. In the afternoon we continue to Nazareth, the town in which the Gospel story begins. We visit the Basilica of the Annunciation, the traditional site of Mary s Well and walk through the narrow winding market streets of the souk to an old Synagogue Church. We will return to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay. Day 3, Wednesday 6th December Jesus Galilean Ministry We will spend the day exploring Jesus ministry around the Sea of Galilee. After breakfast we drive to the summit of the Mount of the Beatitudes where we celebrate the Eucharist overlooking the places where Jesus lived and worked. We then proceed down to Tabgha to visit the Church of the Loaves and Fishes and the Church of the Primacy of St Peter before breaking for lunch. In the afternoon we drive to the ancient fishing village of Capernaum, the centre of Jesus Galilean Ministry, to view the house of Peter and a partially rebuilt 4th century synagogue and foundations that date back to the time of Jesus and possibly the site where Jesus often preached. After time to reflect and meditate we leave Capernaum by boat and sail across the Sea of Galilee to Tiberias and by coach back to our lakeside hotel. Dinner and overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee.

Day 4, Thursday 7th December An ancient pilgrimage route This morning we bid farewell to the Galilee after an early breakfast and begin our journey south through the heart of the West Bank. Entering the Palestinian Territories near Jenin our first stop is at the city of Nablus in which is found Jacob s Well - a site which Jesus himself visited whilst journeying to Jerusalem. From here we drive through the heart of the Israeli Occupation where we will see a considerable number of settlements. We continue to the village of Taybeh and break for lunch. Taybeh is the only entirely Christian village in Palestine and we will learn something of the remarkable mission of its parish church. Leaving Taybeh we make our way up through the hills of the Judean wilderness towards Jerusalem and stop briefly in Bethany, the home of Jesus friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Finally we reach the summit of Mount Scopus and stop for a breathtaking view of the old city of Jerusalem and its beautiful surrounding medieval walls before proceeding to our hotel within the city walls. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem. the lives of modern-day Christians in Bethlehem. We will visit the Shepherds Fields and the Church of the Nativity. We will also have a tour of one of the three major refugee camps in the city and see the signs of hope. After a break for lunch we drive to Jerusalem and stop on the summit of the Mount of Olives for another spectacular view of the Old Cit. We recall the Palm Sunday route and visit places associated with particular events in the gospels as we slowly make our way Day 5, Friday 8th December Bethlehem & The Mount of Olives We spend the morning in and around Bethlehem. We visit the places associated with the birth of Jesus and get a sense of

downhill. We start at Bethphage, the traditional starting point of the procession of palms and in the course of our journey will visit the Church of the Pater Noster, where we recall Jesus teaching of the Lord s Prayer to his disciples and the Church of Dominus Flevit, where Jesus wept over the fate of the city. Finally, we reach the Garden of Gethsemane and the dark and brooding Church of All Nations where we recall Jesus agonized prayers prior to his arrest and reflect on the failure of his closest friends to keep awake and watch with him. Proceed to our hotel within the Old Walled City. Dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem. Day 6, Saturday 9th December Mount Zion & the Way of the Cross For those that wish there will be an opportunity for an early morning (05:00) walk to the Holy Sepulchre for worship and meditation by the tomb and return to our hotel for a short rest before breakfast. After breakfast the first part of the morning will be spent exploring the holy sites located on Mount Zion, where the earliest Christian community lived in the days following the resurrection. Here we will find a site commemorating both the Upper Room used for the Last Supper as well as the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The principal focus of the morning, however, will be a visit to the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu, built at the top of an ancient set of steps which leads up from the City of David to what is believed to have been the residence of the High Priest. Many believe that Jesus himself was led up these steps to his trial by the Roman authorities after his arrest. We then make our way down to the beautiful Crusader Church of St. Anne overlooking the Pools of Bethesda, before visiting the Convent of the Sisters of Zion, built on the foundations of the Antonia Fortress, the Roman Garrison of Jerusalem. After celebrating the Eucharist we will view the recently-excavated first century stone pavement (Gabbatha in the gospels) and then follow the Way of the Cross along the Via Dolorosa to Calvary enshrined within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Return to our hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem.

Day 7, Sunday 10th December Jericho, Qumran & Dead Sea We leave Jerusalem after breakfast and drive down to the Dead Sea basin to spend the day exploring the Dead Sea area. We begin at the oasis city of Jericho, the city of palms which is one of the oldest continually habited city in the world where we can view the Qarantal Monastery that clings precariously to the cliff face of the Mount of Temptation. We then proceed to Qasr al Yehud on the River Jordan where we will have the opportunity of renewing our baptismal vows near the very site John baptised Jesus. We then continue the short waters of the Dead Sea. We plan to return to Jerusalem in good time to join members of the local Christian community for Evensong at St George s Anglican Cathedral. Farewell dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem, distance to visit Qumran, the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered and the recently excavated Essene Monastery where the Scrolls may have originated. After a break for lunch we finally have the chance to experience the unique sensation of floating in the mineral-laden Day 8, Monday 11th December our journey home After a leisurely breakfast we leave Jerusalem and drive west and after seven miles we will stop at the village of Abu Gosh, one of the sites associated with Emmaus in the gospels for our last act of worship in the Holy Land. After a break for lunch we drive on to Tel Aviv s Ben Gurion airport and our return flight to London arriving back in the evening.
