Amy Overton-Harris Jesus took a deep breath when he chose Simon the Zealot as a disciple and political barriers were blown away. Jesus took a deep breath when he dined with Zaccheaus the despised publican, tax collector and class barriers were blown away. Jesus too a deep breath when he conversed with a woman of Samaria and sexual barriers were blown away Jesus took a deep breath when he celebrated a roman Centurion s faith and racial barriers were blown away. Jesus took a deep breath when he allowed a woman who was a sinner to touch him and ideological barriers were blown away. Jesus took a deep breath when he praised a poor widow who offered her mite and economic barriers were blown away. Jesus took a deep breath when he heeded the appeal of a Syrophoenician woman and national barriers were blown away. Jesus took a deep breath when he rebuked the disciples for criticizing a follower who was an outsider to the group and denominational barriers were blown away. Jesus took a deep breath when he chastised the adults for not suffering the children to come to him... and ageist barriers were blown away. Jesus took a deep breath when he told Lazarus to come forth and physical barriers were blown away. Jesus, God s breath made flesh, good deep breaths Will we? Will we be God s breath made flesh? UMC #GIVINGTUESDAY READY OR NOT, THE HOLIDAYS ARE NEARLY UPON US. To help keep the emphasis on giving instead of getting this time of year, mark your calendar for UMC #GivingTuesday Nov. 29. Last year, you were one of nearly 6,000 donors from 27 countries who donated $2.8 million through The Advance to support mission and ministries around the world. Thank you for your faithful giving! In an effort to change even more lives this year, we've created a host of UMC #GivingTuesday resources to help you get involved and spread the message of generosity. You will find the answers to frequently asked questions, tips for using social media, and creative ways to foster the giving spirit. What missionary or project will you support this year? Through The Advance, you can choose from more than 300 United Methodist missionaries and more than 800 United Methodist-related projects worldwide. From feeding the hungry to improving the quality of life of women and children around the world, you are sure to find a project that feeds your passion. As always, 100 percent of your gift to The Advance goes directly to the project of your choice. Our UMC #GivingTuesday toolkit offers ways to get friends and family involved, including asking them to make an early Christmas gift in your honor to your favorite Advance missionary or project Nov. 29. You can also make a gift in honor of those on your Christmas list. If you still want to give a wrapped gift, accompany the notification with a token representation of the designated ministry (a framed map of the region, a water bottle for a water project, a hammer for a construction project, etc.), or design or purchase a card that reflects the theme of the ministry. This Advent, continue to "Give Light, Give Love, and Give Life" through The Advance at umcmission.org/give. 10
