CHILDREN S MESSAGE Whitney Hagan #2233 The Faith We Sing Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday school classes. Andrew Goebel SERMON Going Deeper Eyes on the Prize Rev. Farris WE RESPOND INVITATION TO PRAYER #2162 TFWS Grace Alone LISTENING FOR THE VOICE OF GOD SILENT PRAYER & PASTORAL PRAYER Rev. Larry Young

THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. CHORAL RESPONSE WE OFFER OUR GIFTS & OURSELVES Your generous gifts support the ministries and outreach of the church. You may place gifts of cash or checks made out to First UMC in the offering plates as they are passed. You may also place your Let s Connect/Let Us Pray card in the offering plate. Give online at any time at www.santamonicaumc.org. Credit cards are now accepted at the Sunday Hospitality Table during Coffee Fellowship. Thank you. May God grow in us generous and joyful hearts. THE OFFERTORY The Chancel Choir We Believe (Dan Forrest) We believe in God Supreme, ever present, never seen; God most high, who reigns above; Father nigh, whose name is Love. We whose prayers to God ascend praise creation s source and end. We rejoice in Jesus Christ God s own Son, our sacrifice; very God, yet virgin born; sinless, yet for sinners torn. We whom Jesus died to win know He lives to come again. We adore the spirit free author of our unity. Giver of the sacred word, wellspring of the second birth. We whom He indwells and fills yield our hearts and minds and wills. We, the Church, affirm our faith in the Triune God of grace; kingdoms fall and ages change; faithful, changeless God remains! One in Christ, we lift one voice! We believe, and we rejoice! *RESPONSE #94 UMH The Doxology *UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION Rev. Young Almighty God, we give you thanks and praise for your love shown to us in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Accept the offering of our lives in union with Christ s offering for us. Let the same mind be in us that was in Christ, for yours alone is the power and the glory. Amen. WE GO FORTH TO SERVE *HYMN #396 UMH O Jesus, I Have Promised *BENEDICTION *BENEDICTION RESPONSE God Be in My Head (Susan Siphron) God be in my head, and in my understanding. God be in mine eyes, and in my looking. God be in my mouth, and in my speaking. God be in my heart, and in my thinking. God be at mine end, and at my departing. Amen. POSTLUDE Rigadon from Idoménée (André Campra) Ty Woodward Worship concludes with the Postlude music which prepares us to transition from worship to life in the world. You are invited to remain seated until the Postlude concludes, or to exit quietly.

F O C U S O N October 8, 2017 THIRD WORLD HANDARTS The Missions Council and First UMC are pleased to welcome back Third World Handarts, a non-profit organization that was founded in Anaheim in 1975 to serve the economic needs of the destitute people in the United States, and in developing nations worldwide. Third World Handarts primary focus has been to serve as a source of help for artisans and food producers, along with their families, in developing nations and low-income areas of the U.S. Since 2004 they have operated a year-round collection of clothing, food, blankets, hygiene products, school supplies and other necessities that they bestow to missions. These gifts are then distributed to low-income Native Americans in Arizona and destitute families in Mexico. Their volunteers deliver them at their expense independant of the organization, and some are given to veterans at the VA in Long Beach on Christmas and Easter. Before and after worship next Sunday, all are welcome to come and shop these wonderful artisan crafts in Simkins Hall. All proceeds benefit the work of this cause.
