October 30, 2016: The Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost at 10:30am Prelude: Prelude and Fugue in C major, BWV 553 J.S. Bach Opening Hymn: Please stand. Lasst uns erfreuen Hymnal 618 Opening Acclamation Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Song of Praise Please join in singing the refrain of the Gloria. If you wish to sing the verses with the choir, please turn to LEVAS 243. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father! We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God. Refrain. You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of Father, receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord. You alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Refrain.

The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 1st Lesson Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you "Violence!" and you will not save? Why do you make me see wrong-doing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous-- therefore judgment comes forth perverted. I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 119:137-144 All sing the refrain after the choir, and where indicated. You are righteous, O Lord, * and upright are your judgments. You have issued your decrees * with justice and in perfect faithfulness. My indignation has consumed me, * because my enemies forget your words. Your word has been tested to the uttermost, * and your servant holds it dear. Refrain. 2

I am small and of little account, * yet I do not forget your commandments. Your justice is an everlasting justice * and your law is the truth. Trouble and distress have come upon me, * yet your commandments are my delight. The righteousness of your decrees is everlasting; * grant me understanding, that I may live. Refrain 2nd Lesson 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring. To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel Please stand. Luke 19:1-10 The congregation is invited to sing Heleluyan three times before the Gospel. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a 3

sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much." Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost." The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The congregation is invited to sing Heleluyan twice after the Gospel. The Sermon Please be seated at the invitation of the Preacher. The Rev. Mike Angell The Nicene Creed Please stand. Enriching Our Worship We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 4
