FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Shalom. As 2015 winds down it behooves us to reflect on the past year. Thanks to you, Hadassah s mission of Tikkun Olam is alive and well in Alisa Hadassah. Our monthly meetings and educational programs have been stimulating and enlightening, thanks to the efforts of Bunny Bloom and Ella Goldstein and their respective committees. The multi-faceted fundraising efforts this year have been very exciting and successful thanks to Judy Gerstein and her hard working committee. Lunch Bunch, instituted by Judy, has become a very successful ongoing new program because of the efforts of Phyllis Soffer and Marilyn Taffet, who find the restaurant, plan the menu and call each one of us. Kudos to the bulletin committee who seal and label the bulletin every month, to Joy Keiles who maintains the master membership list and provides the labels and Sheila Farber, one of the editors, who takes the bulletin to the post office. Todah Rabah, Eileen Carpenter, another editor, for the time and effort expended on reestablishing our e-bulletin and web page with the National office. Because of her, e- bulletin is now is fully operational. We encourage everyone to sign up. You will be saving Hadassah money, and will receive information sooner. Membership has grown under the guidance and dedication of Natasha Rosenbaum and Ruth Sachs. Natasha coordinates our master list with National. Both ladies planned and executed our most successful Membership appreciation meeting which was certainly gracious and celebratory. Thanks to Dorothy Brotman, Millie Semel, Marjorie Joseph, Florence Weiss, Rhoda Lesser, and Harriet Cohen who sell cards and certificates at all our meetings and functions and send out good and welfare greetings on behalf of the Chapter. Our newest outreach program, From Grandma with Love, led by Arlene Lazar and Rhoda with Love, led by Arlene Lazar and Rhoda Juskow, has been well received and is being duplicated by other chapters in the region. To our Associates, coordinated by Al Pressler and Manny Strumpf, and their committee of Hadassah women and Associates, our sincere thanks for your successful annual program. Ronny Swinkin, our hospitality chair, has helped to make the social part of our meetings warm and congenial. She can t do it alone, especially when she s in Florida. She needs help. We have accomplished so much because of the commitment, efforts and support of everyone in our chapter. We have raised approximately $45,000.00 to help heal the ill and wounded, to provide safety for those in danger and to provide educational opportunities for our youth here and in Israel. Maimonides wrote that Tikkun Olam requires effort in all three of the great pillars of Judaism: Torah study (study in general), acts of kindness, and the ritual commandments (mitzvot). I think we have fulfilled Tikkun Olam and should be proud of our chapter s accomplishments. Presently, the incoming board is very busy planning and preparing for another successful year. Part of our preparation is the formation of the Past Presidents Advisory Council, PPAC for short. The purpose will be to provide the Board members with support and guidance in order to help us better develop leadership skills, programs and events. We are also planning Membership teas to get better acquainted with you, our members. The Board and I look forward to serving you, and to your continued support and participation. Remember, it is never too late to volunteer to help on a committee. Only by working together can we hope and plan for a better and peaceful world. LUNCH BUNCH ETIQUETTE One of our most successful ongoing activities has been the "Lunch Bunch'. Monthly gatherings at various restaurants are planned by Phyllis Soffer and Marilyn Taffet. This includes a "test" lunch at the proposed site, and a meeting with the chef or manager to discuss a menu and price point. An arrangement is made with the restaurant, based on the number of people who make a reservation. In some cases, this means that additional staff and food are planned. In all cases, the restaurant needs to know the number of people to provide adequate seating. When you reserve a place and don't show, or when you join without a reservation, problems often occur. (In a recent case, only five of the 12 people who made reservations attended. We were told that the restaurant had the right to charge for 12 meals. We had an uncomfortable experience, but were fortunately able to prevail and were charged accordingly. When unplanned occurrences happen in our lives, and you might find yourself unable to attend, please arrange for a substitute, or contact either Phyllis at 609-409-3379 or Marilyn at 609-860-8406, giving them at least 48 hours to contact the restaurant to make the necessary changes. If this is not done, you will be responsible for the cost of the meal if we are charged. Both Phyllis and Marilyn put a lot of time and effort in making the arrangements for our lovely get-togethers. They should not be put in a position of discomfort because of us. Please make every effort to attend our "Lunch Bunch". It is a friendly time for all...and our donation to Hadassah is an added mitzvah. Sheila Farber 5
