Royal Lane Baptist Church Diverse People United in Christ THE MOSAIC July 30, 2008 Volume 22 Issue 16 A Week in Review: The week of July 21 st was a difficult, yet remarkable week in the life of Royal Lane. We began the week with several in our tribe facing frightening medical needs, others making final plans to minister in south Dallas, still others sitting by and holding the hands of loving friends and parents as they faced their final hours. The response I was privileged to witness by you as a congregation was nothing short of miraculous. You were immediately present at Baylor Hospital in Plano, at Medical City, arriving at the church with supplies, clothing, food, etc., etc., etc. You were seemingly EVERYHWERE!!!! What a beautiful snapshot of our congregation caring for one another, meeting the needs of the least among us, helping people leave this life surrounded by love. In diversity there is great strength. We are Christ to all those we intersect in the busy lives we lead. Guess what?? It s next week now and I see you doing it again We are travelers on a journey, Fellow Pilgrims on the Road; We are here to help each other Walk the mile and bear the load. Won t you come and journey with us???? A letter to the congregation As most of you know, our dear member Lydia Kandol is completing all the necessary testing in order to be placed on the transplant list for a new lung. One of the required documents needed is a list of people who would be available to transport Lydia to her doctor s appointments and therapy for approximately five to six weeks after she is released from the hospital. Several of you have let me know you would like to help Lydia; I would like to develop a list with enough people so that no one would have to drive more than once a week. We did find out that she will be allowed to come back to her apartment after surgery there was a question because she lives on the second floor. Any assistance for this dear family would be greatly welcomed; we need drivers, possible sitters for a few hours, etc. If you would like to help with a financial contribution, there is a special fund set up in Lydia s name at the church. Please contact either Marilyn Whatley at 214-321-1769 or call Janet in the church office 214-361-2809 ext.11 (or email jschultz@royallane.org). Please continue to pray for Lydia. She wants to come back to her church family and go back to teaching her kids again. Thank you. Marilyn Whatley Adult Sunday School August Sabbatical Sessions (2008) Care for Caregivers with Betty E. Garrett From her own painful experience as the primary caregiver when her husband Gene was diagnosed with cancer in 2003, Betty Garrett has responded in several creative ways to the lack of resources available to her at that time. She has designed and developed caregiver support groups and has written From Hiccups to Hospice: A Survival Guide for the Cancer Caregiver (2008), a readable and informative resource to help caregivers meet the array of challenges that they face. When asked to lead an August session, Betty emphasized her eagerness to share the victories that can emerge from the many challenges of caregiving. If you are a caregiver or would like to be more encouraging to a caregiver in your life, please join Betty for these Sunday morning sessions. 8/3 Dealing with the new normal 8/10 Self-care strategies 8/17 Money matters: practical tips 8/24 Long-term issues: preparing for the next passage Exploring Prayer with Susan Matthews Prayer is my passion, Susan Matthews replied when she agreed to lead an August session. She has the credentials and background to lead an enlightening exploration of this key spiritual tool. An ordained minister, Susan has also been a presenter of workshops on spiritual formation, a former directress of the Order of Julian of Norwich - a contemplative order of the Episcopal Church, and she holds a Th.D. in Theology from Oxford University. If you are interested in enriching your own understanding and experience of prayer, please join her for these Sunday morning sessions. 8/3 Introduction: What is prayer? 8/10 Why do we pray? 8/17 Are there results of praying? 8/24 Review and summary of prayer Creativity & the Spirit with various Royal Lane artists In the beginning, God created... (Genesis 1:1) Do you meet God, the creator, in your own experiences of creativity? Does making or viewing art enhance your sense of connection to the Spirit? In this set of August sessions, several of the artists in our congregation will share pieces of their artwork, talk about their experience of the sacred in the artistic process, and answer your questions. After presenting on the first Sunday, Linda Mann Binder will be the facilitator for the other Sunday morning sessions. Please join this group to learn more about the intersection of creativity and spiritual gifts. 8/3 Linda Mann Binder 8/10 Martha Box 8/17 Joanne Hawkins 8/24 Candy Howard
