VOL XXXIV BULLETIN FRIDAY 7 TH AUGUST, 2015 No. 39 BUK Alumni Fund Raising Nets N12m VC Invites Alumni to Tour BUK V ice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, mni, MFR has invited members of the Bayero University Alumni across the country to visit the five campuses of the University and see the progress recorded within the last few years. Professor Rasheed made the call during Bayero University Alumni Reunion and Fund Raising Dinner held at the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja on Saturday 1 st August, 2015, adding that with what is on ground in the University the Alumni members should be encouraged to give in their best in sustaining and enhancing the University. The Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Saddiq Isa Radda said Alumni members during a tour of the University would see how the Management had executed physical development, staff development and students welfare projects resulting in the entire transformation of the University. He said the University is proud of the Alumni, more especially its leaders who have demonstrated a sense of commitment, saying that the University Management has taken note of what the Alumni wanted, assuring that their contributions to the University would be utilised judiciously. Professor Rasheed said the University would keep on relying on the Alumni to complement its efforts more especially that the University is undergoing leadership transition because his tenure will expire by 18 th August, 2015. He said a foundation to ensure peaceful graduation of students had being laid, expecting them also to join the Alumni. He commended the officials and members of the Alumni for the support rendered to his Management. The President of Bayero University Alumni, Muhammad Datti Usman praised the Vice Chancellor for his efforts to ensure the establishment of the Alumni. He however, expressed concerned about the low level awareness of the Bayero University Alumni. Muhammad Datti Usman revealed that state chapters have been formed in Abuja, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi and Niger states while Kaduna and Kano have caretaker committees. He urged other states to come up with their chapters because without the chapters it is doubtful if any mileage can be achieved. He said Universities all over the world exist to engender support from members of the Alumni, thereby improving the prestige, academic content and good image of their alma mater. He mentioned that the NEC has looked at the strategic plan of Bayero University and resolved to do something on short, medium and long term deliverables. The President said BUK Alumni would improve amongst others the sanitation on the University campuses; ease inter-campus transportation, by supplying commuter busses; build an e-lecture theatre/auditorium and construct an Alumni Resources Centre, for use of staff and students, in order to promote

2 excellence in pedagogy and welfare of the members of the University Community. He then disclosed that a seven-man electoral committee had been constituted with Alhaji Abubakar idris Udu as Chairman and it would be inaugurated in Birnin-Kebbi in September this year to facilitate election of new Alumni leaders with the incumbents having served for two years. The national convention is scheduled for December 5 th, 2015 at Bayero University, Kano. Also, a statement signed by the General- Secretary, Bayero University Alumni, Professor Habu Mohammed dated 6 th August, 2015, attributed the success of the Fund Raising Dinner to the immense support, solidarity and spirit of brotherliness of the University Management and its Alumni members in general. The statement confirmed that 12million Naira was generated, at the occasion. The Bulletin reports at the dinner that the highest donation of 5million Naira came from Alhaji Abdussamad Isyaka Rabi u, Alhaji Yusuf Hamisu Abubakar Mairago donated 2 million Naira, Kano state government 1 million Naira; former Governor of Niger state, Dr. Mu azu Babangida Aliyu 1 million Naira; former Deputy Governor of Katsina state, Barrister Abdullahi Faskari, 1million Naira amongst others, while the chief launcher, Alhaji Aliko Dangote is to present his donation later. Emulate BUK s Rancour-Free Transition, Universities Urged Nigerian Universities should emulate the good examples of Bayero University, Kano which in the last 10 years recorded smooth and rancour free transition from one Vice-Chancellor to another. This was disclosed by Dr. Kole Shettima, MacArthur Country/African Director while delivery a paper at a Round-Table Discussion to herald the take off of Centre for Economic, Social and Population Research(CESPOR), BUK, on Wednesday 5 th August, 2015 at the Studio of the Department of Agricultural Economic and Extension. He said it gladdens every stakeholder who is concerned about the sustenance of peace and hitch free academic activities in the nation s ivory towers to observe a sustained, smooth, successful and rancour free transition from one Vice-Chancellor to the order as it has been happening in the last one decade in Bayero University, Kano. Dr. Shettima recalled with satisfaction how in 2005, Professor Attahiru Jega succeeded Late Professor Musa Abdullahi in a smooth, peaceful but interesting transition. He said Professor Jega was himself succeeded in 2010 in a similar rancour free transition by the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, mni, MFR. Dr. Kole Shettima observed with happiness that the ongoing processes to produce Professor Rasheed s successor has so far been going on smoothly and rancour free, and was optimistic that a new Vice-Chancellor would emerge same way as his predecessors. He called on Universities in the country to take a cue from BUK s unique and smooth transition example for peace to continue to prevail during and after succession exercises. Dr. Kole commended BUK for establishing the Centre for Economic, Social and Political Research and urged its managers to be very flexible, less autocratic, and be innovative as well as ensure the production of qualitative research that might attract sustained funding. He listed factors that often attract funding for researches as common sense, quality of research output, involving private sectors,

3 adding that researches can only be qualitative if they are relevant to our own local people and can satisfy our needs and peculiarities. Two other academics, Professor Julius Afolabi Falola of the Faculty of Social and Management Science, BUK and Dr. Abubakar Garba, Director, Centre for Trans-Saharan Studies, University of Maiduguri have earlier delivered separate papers. In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, mni, MFR said the CESPOR Round-Table discussion which assembled experts in the field of economy, and political science including representatives of International non- Governmental Organization was expected to brainstorm with a view to developing a blueprint for the full take off of the Centre. He said BUK would continue to accord research its rightful place, because according to him Universities the world over are turning their tentacles to knowledge based research and that we in BUK cannot afford to be left behind, he assured.
