Page 3 www.stkevinflushing.org December 10, 2017 Q. Why is our church not decorated for Christmas? A. We are trying to observe the Advent Season as best we can! We realize that other Churches may already look like Christmas is here and we pass no judgment on them and their decision to decorate early. However, the Season of Advent is one of anticipation, waiting and patience. So we ask you to wait patiently and enter into the spiritual longing for our Savior that the Season of Advent calls forth. If you wish to help decorate the Church, please join us on Friday, December 22nd at 6:00 P.M. Thanks for your question. It was very timely! Page 5 www.stkevinflushing.org December 10, 2017 I will always remember as a child the question that I was often asked: what do you want to be when you grow up? Throughout the years, I guess I answered that question with many different answers. Some of those answers took shape as I grew up and were shaped by the needs that I had as a person, as well as the needs that I had as being part of a family. My father always told me that no matter what path of life I would follow, he wanted me to be honest, a good worker, and a man who feared God. My mother, deepening my father s sentiments, told me that I had to respect others and that I must love and share God s love with others. My parents showed my sisters and I how much they loved and cared for us. By experiencing the way my father and my mother raised us, I always wanted to have a family of my own that would resemble the family that my parents formed. There was one thing that I always knew, namely, that I wanted to become the kind of man my father was. Who and what kind of man I would eventually be formed into, and my vocation, would become clear to me when I took a trip to the country side in Pennsylvania. It was there that I met my wife Lida; and the rest was history. I knew God s plan for me was unfolding before my eyes in that He placed us in each other s paths and revealed to me that my vocation is to be a husband and father. God made ever real the plan He had for me which was to answer the call to marry and raise a family. This would afford us, Lida and I, the opportunity to be part of God s plan of creation and to be part of the Universal and Domestic Church, namely, to raise our family, as the first teachers of our children, in the Truth and ways of our Catholic Faith. With this beautiful vocation already blossoming as husband and father, the call from God did not end there. There was a need to give back for all the good things that I had received from the Lord. My family and I are truly blessed and I knew it was time to help others grow in the same way that God had helped us. Most importantly, HE had given us all His love and now we were ready to share that love with others. My mother s words never meant more to me then when I heard the voice of God telling me to discern another vocation - it was time to give His love to others. It was not easy for me to figure out what it was that God wanted me to do, or what was in God s mind for me, considering I thought my vocation was just to be married and raise a family. There were several choices that I could have made and, of course, at the same time there were other paths that not only would have led me away from God, but also tempt me with the riches of the world. But God was always there; His voice was always present and the call was to help others, to know God, especially those in need. Fifteen years later and after being ordained to the Permanent Diaconate, I can say that I have learned to see, I have learned to feel, and I have learned to touch Christ in His humanity. I have come to understand what it is that God wants us to do: to love and to give of ourselves to all those in need. I understood that to answer a call from God is to answer a call to your vocation in different stages throughout your life. In my case, being a son, a brother, an uncle, a dad, a husband, a good and responsible employee, being a good steward of the goods and talents that I have received from God, I thought that was my vocation. However, very important later in my life was the call to the Permanent Diaconate, being able to serve others without expecting anything in return. I invite those who are discerning a vocation, to trust in the Lord, and trust why God is calling you, and to pray that you can surrender your heart and mind to Him, so that God can work through you and fulfill His will in you. If you would like more information about the Permanent Diaconate or on the formation process of the Permanent Deacon, please contact one of the clergy in the rectory. Another resource for more information is to visit the Diocese of Brooklyn s website at https://dioceseofbrooklyn.org/vocations/the-diaconate/. May God continue to protect and guide you. May Christ continue to draw you closer to His Father. And, may the Holy Spirit dwell within your heart and mind. Deacon Julio Barreneche

Prayer for Vocations - Bishop DiMarzio Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of Your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious live. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest.Amen Vocation Thought Like a shepherd, He feeds His flock. Are you being called to shepherd the people of God as His co-worker? Consider the generous service of priesthood or consecrated life. If the Lord is truly calling you, what is needed is trust. To help in your discernment, you are invited to call the rectory (718-357-8888) and speak with one of the parish priests or you can call the Vocation Office at 718-827-2454. Stewardship Thought Today s second reading is about Christ s coming again, The day of the Lord, Peter calls it, but that day isn t December 25th. It s that other day, that second-coming day about which Peter is concerned. He waits with great hope and anticipation for God to remake the earth into a place of perfect justice and peace. And he sets some demanding goals for the Christian community as it awaits that final day of accounting and reconciliation: strive to be at peace, without spot or blemish. Christian stewards work for peace. As we await the coming of Christmas, what can we do to promote peace in our homes, workplaces, community and St. John the Baptist One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosed the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Exile Both Isaiah and Peter had the task of comforting and encouraging their communities during times of exile. The Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this was, in effect, the same as being in exile from their God. The early Christians, following the Resurrection, expected an immediate return of Christ in glory; they, too, felt in exile as the delay of the Second Coming grew longer and longer. All four of scripture s authors today Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark hasten to help us see things in God s terms, not ours. They want us to know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from God-among-us, since we know that when the faithful are gathered, Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end to shorten the time of our exile: to repent of our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to live as people who seek the coming day of the Lord, when kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss (Psalm 85:10).
