EDOK Youth Newsletter February 2017 New Miqra date, registration is open! MIQRA (meek-rah) is a weekend retreat that focuses on the Bible and allows teens to discover what's in it, why we should care and how to read it. This year's educational focus will be on the History, poetry, wisdom and Prophets (from the Old Testament). When: Saturday, February 18, 2017, 1 pm to Monday, February 20, 2017, 10:30 am Monday is President's Day and many schools are not in session, but early check-out is available on Sunday if needed. If you must leave early on Sunday, you are invited, along with the Youth Commission and 12th graders, to come on Friday to do the pre-miqra reading. Where: St. Michael and All Angels, 6630 Nall Ave, Mission, KS 66202 (All ages will be at one location this year.) Who: Youth in Grades 6-12 Fee: $60 (if this is someone's very first youth event, they pay only $20!) Priority Deadline: Friday, February 10 (price increases by $15 after this date) Registration forms: Youth and Adults can sign-up for Miqra here: https://edok.formstack.com/forms/miqra2017 Volunteers needed for early Miqra reading Adults, parents, college students, parishioners and church staff are invited to help us with the reading on Friday, February 17, at St. Michael and All Angels, 6630 Nall Ave, Mission, KS 66202. Sign up for a time slot here: www.volunteersignup.org/efetr. (If you had previously signed up for January 13, you will need to sign-up again.) Sign-up for EYE before it's too late! EYE is the Episcopal Youth Event and is the single greatest event the Episcopal Church does. It is around 1000 people (high school students, their adult mentors, and bishops from around the church) who all stay on a college campus in a great location and learn, laugh, and serve. When: July 10-14, 2017 Where: University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, OK Who: students in grades 9-12 of the 2016-17 school year and adults 23+ ("applications" are required because a maximum of 24 students and 6 adults will be able to go) Page 1 of 5
Cost: $475. The Diocese will give each youth participant a $125 scholarship, so the cost to youth is $350. This includes travel to OKC, 11 meals, lodging, all regularly scheduled workshops and plenary sessions during EYE. What: Time to practice worship songs and prepare to provide music for a Sunday worship service! I just started taking guitar lessons last month and am both excited and nervous, so I hope others will join me! ~Karen Happening #92 Registration now open Happening is a Christian Experience by youth for youth. It s a weekend retreat, focusing on Jesus and what he taught. There are games, music, great food, and a chance to talk with peers about things that really matter. When: Happening #92 will be March 24-26, 2017 Where: St. David s, 3916 SW 17th St., Topeka, KS Who: Youth in grades 9-12 Fee: $55 ($70 after March 13) Priority deadline: Monday, March 13 Registration forms: https://edok.formstack.com/forms/happening92 (First-time Happeners, Youth Staff and Adults all use the same form.) We will have a staff meeting on Saturday, March 4, 1:30-3:30 pm, at St. Andrew s Episcopal Church, 828 Commercial, Emporia, KS. It is important that as many staff (youth and adults) as possible attend to receive training and help with preparations for the weekend. Mega Camp will be here before you know it! Camp Wood features a variety of activies such as horseback riding, archery, climbing tower, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, water slide, mud slide, arts and crafts, and sports. The volunteer Episcopal staff provides solid Christian education, featuring worship, music, small group discussions, and prayer. Page 2 of 5
When: Sunday, June 4, 2:30 pm to Saturday, June 10, 11 am, 2017 Where: Camp Wood YMCA, Elmdale, KS Who: Students in grades 3-12 for 2016-17 school year (you must have finished third grade to attend); Camp is NOT restricted to Episcopalians or regular churchgoers. All are welcome, so feel free to invite friends and family. Cost: $430; $460 if you register or pay after May 12. The diocese has 20 scholarships for $140 available for those with extreme financial need. You can apply on the registration form. Preference will be given to those who have registered by April 1. Scholarships are awarded by a committee. Your parish should also be able to provide some scholarship money. Priority Deadline: Friday, May 12, 2017 (fee increases by $30 if you register or pay after this date). There are absolutely no refunds after Thursday, May 18. Regardless of your payment status, you will still owe the full price for camp unless you notify us that you are canceling your registration by May 18.
