www.englandspastforeveryone.org.uk/explore Oxfordshire BURFORD GAZETTEER: OWNERS AND OCCUPIERS Work on the owners and occupiers of Burford s buildings was undertaken during 2003-6 as part of the Oxfordshire EPE project. The research accompanied the architectural investigations summarised on this website. Standard sources included: census enumerators books 1841-1901 in The National Archives; District Valuation assessments in Oxfordshire Record Office; printed trades directories including Kelly s Directory of Oxfordshire (1883-1939); RH Gretton, The Burford Records (1920), which summarises a vast body of early property deeds; and research (published and unpublished) by the Revd Raymond Moody and Mrs Joan Moody of Burford, drawing in part on title deeds in private possession. In some cases lack of documentation prevents the building s history being taken back earlier than the 19th century. The research was carried out by RB Peberdy of VCH Oxfordshire. NOTE: these two properties were first recorded as a single property reckoned as one and a half burgages. At the beginning of the 18th century it was divided into two occupational units. Meanwhile, the ownership became divided into two parts (not corresponding to the occupation). The following notes deal first with ownership; occupation is treated separately for the two properties (below). Notes provided by R. Moody also provide information about the rear of the tenement plot, including the addition of a malthouse between 1776 and 1787. 1: Ownership 1910 Owned and occupied by Elizabeth Sharpe (DV Survey, ref. no. 221). 1893 John Sharp is owner (information from R. Moody). 1883 Will of Joseph Wiggins is proved; sometime afterwards John Sharp acquired an interest in the property (information from R. Moody). 1860 Josiah Pead sells ownership of property to Joseph Wiggins (butcher and occupant) (information from R. Moody). 1839 VCH Oxfordshire (EPE) page 1 of 7 Burford Gazetteer: 111-113 High Street

Moiety A: Josiah Pead buys this from William Wickens, thereby reuniting the ownership of the original tenement (one and a half burgages) (information from R. Moody). 1825 Moiety B: Josiah Pead bought the reversion of this (information from R. Moody). 1821 Moiety B: James Wickens left this to his wife Elizabeth for life, and then to dau. Hannah (married to Robert Harris, butcher) (information from R. Moody). 1819 Moiety A: all parties to the Bateman estate convey the moiety to William Wickens (occupant of Wheatsheaf) (information from R. Moody). 1806 Moiety A: John Bateman (tea dealer) left properties to his wife while she remained in business, and then to be divided between his six daughters (information from R. Moody). 1800 Moiety A: this was conveyed by Ann Rich and son Thomas Rich to John Bateman (mercer) (information from R. Moody). 1795 Moiety B: Matthias Padbury sold this to James Wickins (victualler) (information from R. Moody). 1787 Moiety B: the moiety descended from Susannah Rich was secured to Matthias Padbury (clockmaker) and wife Susannah, nee Baker (information from R. Moody; C.F.C. Beeson, Clockmaking in Oxfordshire 1400-1850 (Banbury Hist. Soc. IV, 1962), p. 132). 1776 Moiety A: inherited from Sarah Rich, this was secured to Harris Rich (son of Peter Rich junior) and then to his wife, Ann Young (information from R. Moody). 1737 Peter Rich junior conveyed the property to trustees for his two sisters Sarah and Susannah Rich (heirs of Anne Abraham, sister of Peter Rich senior). From this point the property descended as moieties (information from R. Moody). 1698 Sir John Cotton of Landwade, Cambs., and John Stone the younger of London (merchant) sell the capital messuage once known as the Bull to Peter Rich of Upton (papermaker) (R.H. Gretton, Burford Records, pp. 474 5). 1697 John Highlord, Esq., of Micham, Surrey, sold properties in Burford to Sir John Cotton and Sir John Stone the younger (merchant) of London (R.H. Gretton, Burford Records p. 474). 1685 VCH Oxfordshire (EPE) page 2 of 7 Burford Gazetteer: 111-113 High Street

The property probably belonged to Mr John Highlord and was held by Richard Bartholomew (R.H. Gretton, Burford Records, p. 454). 1652 The property probably belonged to Mr John Highlord and was held by Richard Bartholomew (R.H. Gretton, Burford Records, p. 445). c.1620 Property probably sold around this time to John Highlord, sometime citizen and alderman of London (cf. R.H.
