(James 1:17, NASB) The gifts are easy to find on Christmas morning. They lie wrapped in bright paper, ribbons, and bows, and they are in the same spot year after year under and around the Christmas tree. My siblings and I had no trouble spotting them when I was a child. Now, my sons always find them right away when they arise on Christmas Day. On days other than Christmas, however, we may overlook the gifts. When wrapping paper and ribbons are absent, gifts are harder to notice. Each day that we wake up is itself a gift from God, and it includes many gifts from midnight to 11:59 P.M. An unexpected encounter with a friend or hospitality from a stranger are blessings along the way. Time spent with a toddler and the smile of an infant are blessings too. Warm sunshine on our face, wildlife outside the window or the beauty of a flower lifts our spirits. The gifts come in an endless variety, and we can easily speed right past them on a busy day. Do we notice these gifts from God? Do you often thank our heavenly Father for them? In addition to teaching us that good things and perfect gifts are from God our Father in James 1:17, the epistle writer also teaches us to find joy in trials and troubles: My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance, and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4, NRSV. I do not know anyone who wants to be sick, but a day or two in bed with the flu or a cold can be just what we need illness can force us to rest from a hectic schedule or lay aside the burdens of life for a while. Who volunteers for emotional pain or high levels of anxiety? Yet, these can be gifts as well, if they bring us humbly to God s throne in prayer when we need help. Much as we might wish to avoid them, trials and troubles can be gifts in our walk of discipleship with Christ. When they result in greater intimacy with God, they are indeed occasions for giving thanks. As you prepare to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this month, I invite you to consider these questions: how is my practice of gratitude? Do I notice some (or most) of the gifts that God pours out to me each day? Am I able to thank God in difficult circumstances, as well as in happy ones? May the LORD open our eyes and hearts to notice more of His blessings. Happy Thanksgiving! Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. (Psalm 107:1, NRSV) Peace in Christ, Pastor Jason

When Pastor Kayumbo in Tanzania distributed shoebox gifts to children in a community of idol worship and witchcraft, some of the children and parents asked, why would strangers give us gifts? A few Christians in the village had been praying for years that God would open doors for others to believe. Now 16 believers came to the faith as a result of Operation Christmas Child. Pastor Kayumbo rides 2 hours twice a week on his bicycle to lead the new church. They are praying for more people to believe. It all started with shoeboxes. There is still time to pack a shoebox. Or you can put items in the extra items box in the welcome area or upstairs in the Children s Dept. I will pack it for you. Share the joy of Christmas with children around the world. Get a shoebox (or 2 or 3) Choose a boy or girl and their age Fill the box with gifts Include $9 per box (if you can) Drop off at church November 4th, 11th, and 18th (More details on the table in the Welcome Area) Make a difference in a child s life! Our goal is 150 boxes! Operation Christmas Child Coordinator Kim Sterner The GOODNEWSletter
