09-04-2016 PARISH LIFE Page 3 A Message from Father Don Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In today s Gospel, Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem when he stops to give this no-nonsense talk to a great crowd of people who want to follow Him. Like any rabbi of His time, Jesus uses exaggeration to command attention. He wants to get the point across that He must be at the center of His follower s lives. Jesus insists that no one can be His disciple who does not consider Him before family or self. The disciple who thinks he or she can serve Jesus part-time is foolish. The disciple must be willing to renounce or give up everything out of love for Christ. No one loves us more than Jesus does. No one loves our family members more than Jesus does. And he wants us to love one another. But Jesus knows that sometimes what we think of as love may not be. Sometimes misguided love can prevent us from growing up and taking responsibility. True love frees us to be our true selves. Jesus is reminding us that we must take responsibility for our choices. We are free to choose to follow Him. When we are young, we learn about Jesus from our parents and elders, but as we mature, we must begin to learn what Jesus means in our lives and to follow Him because we choose Him all the way! This week spend some time reflecting on how you choose Jesus each day in your life. Discern how you can learn more about Jesus. How does your choice of following Jesus make life better for you, your family and your friends? Building Fund plans are underway for our new Family Life Center. The Music Ministry is always looking for people to volunteer at our Liturgical Celebrations. Our weekly rehearsals will begin again on Wednesday, September 7th at 7:30pm in the choir area of the church. We encourage new members to join us! Un Mensaje del Padre Don En el evangelio de hoy Jesús está en camino a Jerusalen cuando inesperadamente se detiene a predicar a una gran multitud de personas que quieren seguirlo. Como cualquier rabino de esa época Jesús llama la atención. Y él quiere darnos a conocer de que él debe de ser el centro de la vida de sus seguidores. Jesús insiste que si alguno quiere seguirlo y no lo prefiere a él antes que a su familia o a sí mismo, no puede ser su discípulo. Los discípulos quienes piensan que pueden servir a Jesús sólo por medio tiempo estan equivocados. El discípulo debe de estar dispuesto a renunciar o abandonar todo por amor a Cristo. Nadie nos ama más como Jesús lo hace. Nadie ama más a los miembros de nuestra familia como Jesús lo hace. Y él quiere que nos amémos los unos a los otros. Pero Jesús sabe que a veces lo que pensamos que es "amor" puede no serlo. A veces el amor equivocado puede impedirnos en el crecimiento y en la toma de responsabilidades. El verdadero "amor" nos da libertad para ser nosotros mismos. Jesús nos está recordando que tenemos que tomar responsabilidad de nuestras elecciones. Somos libres para elegir a seguirlo. Cuando somos jovenes aprendemos sobre Jesús por nuestros padres y ancianos, pero ahora en adultos, tenemos que empezar a aprender lo que significa Jesús en nuestras vidas y seguirlo porque nosotros elegimos seguir su camino!
