KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 1 KNIGHTLY NOTES ST JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL NO. 10442 7260 WEST SAHARA AVENUE LAS VEGAS, NV 89117 PHONE: 702-363-1902 Y2K PLUS XV EDITION, ISSUE I JANUARY 2015 NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT Dear Brothers in Christ, My family and I just enjoyed one of our best Christmases ever. I am sure my relationship with all of you enhanced its spirituality, and it kept me focused. Here s trusting you had a meaningful Advent and can keep that light shining in the coming year. Let us focus on healing and forgiveness. As we look forward to a New Year, full of hopes and promises, we ask what God has prepared for us and also, what He has prepared us for. This Christmas He once again reminded us of our great gifts through a small Child who changed the world. The gift of that Child who grew to be a leader of the least and an enemy of the state carried one message, Love one another, as I have loved you. His first duty was to redeem us and forgive us. We are called to do the same. Supreme has recommended Psalm 51 for our theme this month. Have mercy on me oh God, according to thy steadfast love; according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Forgive us our sins, as WE FORGIVE those who have sinned. Forgiveness starts with those who are the closest to us, family and friends. We Catholics are truly privileged to have the sacrament of Reconciliation, the least exercised of these incredible signs of God s love. It is so great a gift, it is almost sinful to ignore as so many of us do. The precepts of the Church require us to go at least twice a year, between the beginning of Advent and the Epiphany and again between Ash Wednesday and the Ascension. St. John Paul II said, Every family is called by the God of peace to have the joyous and renewing experience of reconciliation, that is, communion reestablished and unity restored. --- Familiaris Consortio 21 Looking forward to seeing all of you soon; we have a full calendar for the next few months, I hope you can join us. Peace to you, fraternally, Ken Sawyer Grand Knight Council 10442 Kenjsawyer@cox.net 702-646-4404

Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son Jesus Christ more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 9 COVER TWO PEOPLE WITH ONE POLICY In this month s article, I want to discuss a type of life insurance product with which you might not be familiar. This product offers a way for you to help your heirs meet estate settlement costs without subtracting from the total value of your estate. After all, you ve worked hard to accumulate wealth or build a business over the years and you want to pass along that value to your family, charity or church in its entirety. To this end, the Knights of Columbus designed a Survivorship Universal Life (SUL) product. SUL is a second to die, or survivorship, life insurance program that covers two people, (usually husband and wife) and the death benefit is paid upon the death of the surviving second person which is normally when an estate would be taxed. This can be an important part of an estate plan. Keep in mind, an SUL policy is one policy that covers two people. This has advantages, including a lower cost than two individual life insurance policies. It is a great option for a married couple with children. It can provide funds for the legal guardians chosen to care for children in the event both parents die, which is especially attractive to parents of a special needs child. If you have a child or children, you need life insurance. If you intend to pass on any property or wealth, you need life insurance. A SUL policy is one option that we can discuss when we meet for an insurance review. Agent Name Neil Peters Phone (702)426-3157 Email: Neil.peters@kofc.org ********************************************* NOTE: All members are encouraged to look into the annuity and insurance programs offered by the Knights. The annuities start at 100 and are a great long term investment. Go to the Supreme Council s website or Contact field agent Neil Peters above for more info or to sign up. With over $92 million in insurance and Annuities in force and 1400 service agents, the Knights are proudly fulfilling Father McGivney s vision of protecting the widows and orphans of deceased Knights. You can also plan and save for your financial security and future retirement. Please take advantage of this special fraternal service. As a Knights of Columbus member, this is a free insurance, annuity and estate planning service for you and your family. *************************************************** Ladies Auxiliary Dear Ladies Hoping all of you had a joyous and Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year. I also wanted to thank everyone for all their help this past month. We had Breakfast with St Nick on Dec 7 th, along with a highly successful weekend of Religious goods sales. Thanks to all who helped out, and in particular Vilma and Lynne for their choices in ordering supplies that we were able to sell. Also to Sandy D Agostino and Sandy Castro, who worked on the flyers to give to the Religious Ed children and then making up beautiful note cards to sell at the table. Our Christmas party was Dec 11 th and was a great success as well. Thanks to Peggy T for coordinating it with Sienna for us. The food was wonderful as usual. I would like to thank all those who came. It was enjoyed by all, including the Knights who came. Our next meeting will be Jan 8 th at 730 in the St Francis/Clare Rooms Our next Religious Goods Sales will be the weekend of Jan 24-25 th. Our Annual Ladies Retreat with Father Albert from the Newman Center will be on Jan 31 st from 8am to 12pm. Father Albert will be the retreat master. The theme of the retreat will be Call to discipleship, Call to Holiness. Article will be in the bulletin soon opening the retreat up to the Parish women. We will provide a continental breakfast as in past years. There will be no charge for the retreat, but there will be an invitation to make a free will donation to Father Albert s Chapel Fund. I would like to close with a New Year s prayer that I really liked and would pray for all of us: Remember us, 0 God; from age to age be our comforter. You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights, seasons and years. Bless your children at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope that is ours in the coming of Christ. May the Lord bless all of us with a peaceful, happy and healthy New Year doing His work as Sisters in Christ. Jolyn Pinzl President, Ladies Auxiliary Council 10442

KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 15 Pope Francis meets Supreme Knight 12/12/2014 Pope Francis received Supreme Knight Carl Anderson in a private audience at the Vatican on Dec. 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was the third such audience granted by Pope Francis to the Supreme Knight. During the course of the meeting, the Supreme Knight spoke with the Holy Father about the Order s many activities. On behalf of the 1.8 million members of the Knights of Columbus, the Supreme Knight presented the Holy Father with a contribution of $1.6 million from the Vicarius Christi Fund, for the pope s personal charities. They also discussed the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund and the Supreme Knight provided a contribution of $400,000 from that Fund to supplement the relief efforts of the Holy See in the Middle East. The Supreme Knight was also present at the special Mass celebrated by Pope Francis in St. Peter s Basilica to mark the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. At the conclusion of the Papal Mass, Msgr. Eduardo Chavez, postulator of the cause of St. Juan Diego, and co-author with the Supreme Knight of a book on Our Lady of Guadalupe, presented the Holy Father with a silver rose. Over the past few months, the silver rose was handcarried by Knights of Columbus from Canada, through the United States, to Mexico City as a symbol of unity in the continent of America. For more than 50 years, the Order has sponsored the Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of America. In 2001, Supreme Knight Anderson dedicated the Order to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Since that time, the Order has organized and supported numerous spiritual initiatives and academic conferences to promote devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Kofc.org
