The Christmas Season December 25 - January 5 (Pulpit Attire is White) CHRISTMASTIDE Christmastide (the time between Christmas and Epiphany) is a 12 day festival, beginning on the day after Christmas. The emphasis is the Incarnation and its relation to the Christian hope. The color used is white, suggesting godhead, purity, joy and victory. General Theme For This Quarter: ASSURING HOPE The study this quarter focuses on the promises of hope found in the words of the prophet Isaiah and the hope found in Christ, the Suffering Servant. The first two units look at tests from Isaiah to study the prophet s message as told to Israel. We look at Isaiah s message of comfort and hope in the context of Israel s destruction and subsequent captitivity in Babylon. The final unit looks at the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecy as it unfolds through Christ. The texts for Unit III come from Mark s gospel. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: UNIT #2 A FUTURE FOR GOD S PEOPLE DECEMBER * JANUARY FEBRUARY CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! MOBC STEWARDSHIP EMPHASIS MONTH God s Call to Christian Stewardship: It s About More than Just the Money Stewardship of Body, Mind and Spirit In English, the words health, whole and hale are all derived from the same Old English root word. This gives us a clue that it is impossible to deal with health issues without considering what it means to be whole. The Jewish concept of shalom brings these ideas together to describe the total well being of a person body, mind, and spirit. The root word of shalom means peace. Shalom is a comprehensive word expressing a wholeness or total well being that includes all areas of a person s life. Shalom is expressed in harmonious community; physical, mental, and emotional health; material prosperity; a long and happy life; healthy relationships; security; and peace with God. The peace of shalom is the peace of total welfare. This concept provides a framework for looking at stewardship of body/mind/spirit. Stewardship of body/mind/spirit is about making choices that lead to wholeness of life. The foundation to good health is in our relationship with God. The peace of shalom is based on the acceptance of who we are and what we are created and called to be by God. Our relationships with other people are affected by our self identity as we try to understand what it means to be created in the image of God and to enter into complete relationship with God. Scriptural Basis Psalm 139: 13 14 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Objectives for stewardship of the mind/body/spirit 1. Consider the care of your bodies as part of Christian 2. Understand the interconnections between body, mind, and spirit. 3. Identity ways to be better stewards of personal health and wholeness. Prayer time and rest Things to think about, discuss with others or write about in your personal journal: Sources of stress and ways you deal with it Things in your life that have power and control over you and how these things interfere with your relationship with God Self image and self esteem Eating habits and exercise SHALOM! The MOBC CIVIC MINISTRY is need of individuals ages 18 and older to keep Mount Olive Baptist Church informed of community activities (such as food and clothing drives), programs (meals for seniors, musicals and other services), elections (local and national), and pending actions (such as hearings impacting Henrico County residents and business owners). Are YOU ready for civic responsibility? If you are interested in obtaining more information, please contact the members of the Nominating Ministry listed below: Pamela Henderson 614 2524 James Isler 222 8979

MOBC HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART The Christian Season of Epiphany Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him. Matthew 2: 1 2 The word Epiphany is from the Greek word epiphaneia, which means manifestation or appearance. The Season of Epiphany begins January 6th (the traditional date of Jesus baptism), and continues 4 9 weeks depending on the date of Easter. Attention in the celebration is given to the coming of the Wise Men, the baptism of Jesus, and his first miracle of the turning of water to wine at the wedding feast in Cana. The accent is on JESUS as the revealer of GOD to mankind, the missionary and the evangelistic ministries are emphasized. In many sections of the world, even in America, Epiphany is called Old Christmas, because the two seasons used to be combined. On the Day of Epiphany, January 6, we celebrate Christ s being revealed to the world and the visit of the wise men, the first Gentiles to whom He was made known. Scripture does not say how many wise men came to Bethlehem. At various times tradition has set the number from two to twelve. However, because three gifts are mentioned, today we usually think of three wise men or Magi. The color for Epiphany is GREEN. The color GREEN stands for life and growth. The color of the table cloth on the Communion table and podium are changed to GREEN to indicate the season. The pulpit dress is changed according to the season of the Christian Calendar. Look for further information on the Christian Calendar and pulpit dress colors in the near future. EPIPHANY: January 6 March 8, 2011 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life!
