Our next meeting is June 18, this Saturday. We will be meeting at our usual place, Mel s Diner at 1730 Grass Valley Hwy in Auburn, CA. The Fourth of July Parade is rapidly approaching so we will need to prepare for that, with the color guard marching in the parade as well as a gathering at the Ross house afterwards (with the possibility of a brief meeting if enough members are present.) I d like to thank our Polling Place team who worked a polling place on this past Election Day. Ron Barker served as the Inspector, Conni Barker served as the Judge and Keith Bigbee, Gordon Clark, Jeanette Clark and Dale Ross served as Clerks. Their work is a valuable and important part of our free and democratic election process that ensures the future of our Republic. (Yep, it s that important!) It is also a valuable fundraising opportunity for our chapter. With fewer members available to serve on Election Day, we do have less opportunity now than in years past. For that reason, I encourage all members to be on the lookout for other fundraising opportunities to help continue our programs such as the Youth Programs, Scout programs, Veteran Outreach, etc... One opportunity that has grown out of an existing annual tradition is Wreaths Across America. We will receive a small portion of each wreath we sell, so I encourage everyone to start selling wreaths as Christmas will be here before you know it. We have an online order page setup for our Chapter at www.goldcountrysar.org/wreaths/ as well as printed brochures with an order form. You can pick up the brochures at our meetings. If you are unfamiliar with the wreaths, they are placed on the gravesites of veterans every December. Our Chapter is now involved with the Auburn Cemetery Ceremony which is held at the same time as other ceremonies across the country, and even the world. Finally, please be giving thought to chapter elections coming up later this year, and let an officer know if you are interested in stepping forward to help with any area of the Chapter. It s never too soon, or too late, to get more involved!

5 The Forty Niner Bunker Hill was located outside of Boston, though the actual Battle of Bunker Hill mostly took place on the adjacent Breed s Hill. The battle was part of the Siege of Boston in 1775. The colonial forces learned that the British intended to break out of Boston and fortify the areas around Boston Harbor. In response to the threat, colonial forces managed to occupy Breed s Hill and surrounding land to prepare for battle. The British attacked when they learned of the colonial forces present on the hill. In the first two waves, the British suffered heavy losses. The Battle of Bunker Hill This Month in History June 17, 1775 After a third wave, with the colonial forces, running out of ammunition, were overrun and the British took the hill. It was during this third push that Joseph Warren, patriot and physician, was killed. The iconic painting by John Trumble depicts an idealized scene of his death. Colonial forces fell back to Cambridge, but the massive losses the British suffered (226 killed, over 800 wounded) discouraged any further action. The disproportionate loss of life on the British side, including many officers, led to much more caution on their part in future engagements. We have... learned one melancholy truth, which is, that the Americans, if they were equally well commanded, are full as good soldiers as ours. British Officer in Boston following the battle It also gave encouragement and hope to other colonies regarding the ability of militia to face regular army troops. This combined to the effect of American forces in the New York and New Jersey Campaign succeeding in making tactical retreats in situations where the British could otherwise have achieved decisive victory if they had pressed their advantage.
