INTRODUCTION The Bible still talks about Israel after it was destroyed. A small group of people (remnant) from Israel and Judah came back to their own country. These people were called Israel or Israelites. These same people are called Israelis or Jews today. ISAIAH! THE MAN ISAIAH Isaiah was one of the greatest prophets. He was a prophet to Judah and Jerusalem. He is called a major (great) prophet. His wife was a prophetess (Isaiah 8:3). Isaiah prophesied at a very important time. The people of Samaria (Israel) were taken to Assyria during the years he prophesied. Judah was attacked by Sennacherib. Isaiah warned the people of Judah and Jerusalem that the Lord would soon judge them for their sin. Isaiah also warned Assyria, Egypt and Babylon that the Lord would soon judge them. Isaiah lived when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah ruled the people of Judah. He often went to see Ahaz and Hezekiah.

The first six chapters of Isaiah tell about the sins of the people of Judah. Isaiah told the people of Judah, "Turn away from your sin." He told them, "Return to the Lord." How did Isaiah picture the sin of the people of Judah (Isaiah 1:4)? Did the Lord accept the sacrifice of the people of Judah (Isaiah 1:11-15)? Why? Isaiah told the people of Judah, "Repent of your sins." What would the Lord do if they would repent (Isaiah 1:18,19)?

What would happen to those who would not repent (Isaiah 1:20)? What would happen to those who drank too much wine (Isaiah 5:11-25)? Isaiah said the Lord would bring judgment upon the people of Judah. He also said the Lord would take away the sin of the people of Jerusalem (Zion) and bless them (Isaiah 4:2-6). The judgment of the Lord was to chase the sinners out of Judah. The judgment was to turn the people of Judah away from idols. The Lord would make the people of Judah a blessing to other nations when they would be clean from their sin and their idols. Isaiah's call to prophesy. Chapter six tells how Isaiah was called to prophesy. What did Isaiah see (Isaiah 6:1)? How did he feel when he saw this? How would you feel? Was Isaiah willing to prophesy for the Lord (Isaiah 6:8)? Isaiah prophesied to King Ahaz. Isaiah chapters 7 to 14 are believed to be written when Ahaz was king of Judah. These chapters tell how Isaiah prophesied to Ahaz. Ahaz would not listen to Isaiah. Isaiah told Ahaz that the Lord would punish the people for their sin. Isaiah also told how the Lord would send a Messiah. (Messiah means Savior and King.) The Messiah would set Israel free and make it a great nation.

Isaiah prophesied to King Hezekiah. Isaiah chapters 15 to 66 must have been written when Hezekiah was king. Isaiah tells much about Hezekiah in these chapters. Isaiah chapters 36 to 38 tell how Isaiah helped Hezekiah. These chapters are much like 2 Kings 18:17-20:11 and 2 Chronicles 32:1-24. Isaiah told about the devil. READ ISAIAH 14:12-17. The name "devil" is not used in these verses. These verses tell what the devil did. This is how we know they are about the devil. Isaiah 14:12 calls this person "star of the morning." The King James version of the Bible calls him "Lucifer, son of the morning." What did he do to become the way he is (Isaiah 14:13,14)? ALSO READ EZEKIEL 28:11-19 and 2 CORINTHIANS 11:14. Isaiah told about the people of Judah going back to their own country. Isaiah prophesied that the people of Judah would go back to their own country. He told that a king in Persia would send them back. What was the name of this king (Isaiah 44:28, 45:1-4)? Isaiah said this before this king was born. Yet, Isaiah knew his name. Isaiah said this even before the people of Judah were taken away to Babylon. Jeremiah also told about this king. He did not call him by name, but told how he would send the people of Israel (Judah) to their own country (Jeremiah 29:10). READ 2 CHRONICLES 36:22,23. Isaiah told about the Messiah. Isaiah prophesied much about the Messiah. The Messiah was to save Israel. We know the Messiah as Jesus Christ. Isaiah was told how the Messiah was to be born. To whom was He to be born ( Isaiah 7:14)?

What was to be His name? Isaiah said the Messiah would be a Child. What were some of the names given to this Child (Isaiah 9:6-7)? Isaiah told of a man who was to come before the Messiah. What did he say about this man (Isaiah 40:3-5)? READ MATTHEW 3:1-6. Who was this man? One day Jesus spoke to the people in the Jewish church. He read some of the words from Isaiah 61:1-5. READ THESE VERSES AND ALSO LUKE 4:18,19. Did Jesus read all the words in Isaiah 61:1-5? Jesus read only part of the prophecy. This part of the prophecy came true while He was on earth. Jesus will come back to earth again. Then the rest of the prophecy will come true. The first time the Messiah came, He came to suffer and to die for us. In Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12 we have a picture of the suffering Messiah. READ ISAIAH 52:13 to 53:12 CAREFULLY. MEMORIZE ISAIAH 53:6. What does this verse tell us about ourselves? What does it say about our sin? For how many people did the Messiah suffer? The Messiah will come back to earth the second time. He will rule over all the nations. Isaiah 35 tells the land of Israel will be beautiful and will have peace. What are some other things that will happen at this time (Isaiah 65:19-25)?

Some Bible teachers believe that this is the millennium. The word "millennium" means 1000 years. The Messiah is to be king in Jerusalem for a 1000 years (Revelation 20:1-7). Isaiah told about a new heaven and a new earth. Isaiah told about a new heaven and a new earth in Isaiah 65:17 and 66:22. READ 2 PETER 3:10-14 and REVELATION 21.! NEW TESTAMENT USES WORDS FROM ISAIAH Words from Isaiah are used 20 times in the New Testament. Each time the New Testament uses them, it also uses Isaiah's name. Example: John 12:39,40; Acts 28:25,26,27. The book of Isaiah has too many wonderful things in it to study it in one lesson. May the Lord help you to spend more time in the book. WORDS TO LEARN 1. redeemed - the ones saved, the ones who were slaves and someone paid to have them set free. 2. Messiah - Savior and expected King - Jesus Christ. 3. accept - to take when offered. 4. Zion - another name for Jerusalem. OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY Volume 2 by Joseph F. Pope.
