the Torch Round Lake United Methodist Church Dedicated 1894 Celebrating our 118 th year July/August 2012 Pastoral Ponderings I regularly read Christian Century, a magazine that covers religious news and topics. A recent issue had a short article about reaction to a column written by Susan Reimer, a columnist for the Baltimore Sun newspaper. In this article she was critical of the Vatican for putting pressure on American nuns. While she expected significant negative reaction to her column she received very little (only two negative responses out of sixty). This is what one of her responses included: I am convinced that the church is not Rome. I am convinced that the church is the folks I worship with every Sunday, the volunteers that I work with every Saturday the volunteers who work with immigrants. This is my take-away from this comment: the church is most visible and important at the local, congregational level. This is where the church can make the most difference in the lives of those who are members of the congregation and in the communities that surround the congregation. I have believed this even before I entered the ordained ministry, choosing to devote the majority of my time to the local congregation rather than other ministry opportunities. This way of thinking is the seed that has forced both the United Methodist Church as a denomination and the Upper New York Annual Conference to take seriously the role of the local church in making disciples of Jesus Christ as they seek to assist congregations to remain or become vital, disciple-making places in a world that isn t always sure the church and perhaps even God is relevant in today s world. Over the past several years there have been many studies completed, books written and programs developed to define what a vital congregation is like and how to become one. Both the general United Methodist Church and the Upper New York Annual Conference have initiatives. I encourage you to check out what the denomination has available as resources at www.umc.org and search for information on Vital Congregations and ReThink Church. You are also encouraged to read about the Plentiful Harvest initiative of the Upper New York Annual Conference at www.unyumc.org. There are many ideas that we just might be able to use right here at the Round Lake UMC as we work together to be all God has created us to be; as we work together to be a vital witness of the presence of God in our world today and make disciples for Jesus Christ. Why not take a look and find and idea or two we just might be able to use? With God s help and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst, WE CAN DO IT! With Christ s Peace and Joy Rev. Jane

Scriptures in Worship During July we will continue to explore Jesus teachings of discipleship. This year we will explore discipleship lived through the church as we read through Paul s Letter to the Ephesians beginning on July 15 th. In this letter Paul celebrates the life of the church, a unique community established by God through the work of Jesus Christ, who is its head. Throughout the letter Paul shows us how the church is the body of Christ in which all has been united into a single new humanity. It is suggested that you spend a few minutes reading through this Letter and include the passages that are not included in the Sunday readings so you have a fuller understanding of Paul s reasoning. July 1, 2012 Sacrament of Holy Communion 2 Samuel 1, 17-27; Psalm 130; 2 Corinthians 8:7-15; Mark 4:35-41 July 8, 2012 Guest Preacher: Rev. Ray Stees 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10; Psalm 48; 2 Corinthians 12:2-10; Mark 6:1-13 July 15, 2012 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 12b-19; Psalm 24; Ephesians 1:3-23; Mark 6:14-29 July 22, 2012 2 Samuel 7:1-14a; Psalm 89; Ephesians 2:11-22; Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 July 29, 2012 2 Samuel 11:1-15; Psalm 14; Ephesians 3:14-21; John 6:1-21 August 5, 2012 Sacrament of Holy Communion 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13; Psalm 51; Ephesians 4:1-16 John 6:24-35 August 12, 2012 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33; Psalm 130; Ephesians 4:25-5:2; John 6:35, 41-51 August 19, 2012 1 Kings 2:10-12, 3:3-4; Psalm 111; Ephesians 5:15-20; John 6:51-58 August 26, 2012 1 Kings 8:1-43; Psalm 84; Ephesians 6:10-20; John 6:56-69. Post Antiques Festival Wrap Up The 2012 Round Lake Antiques Festival is now history. A big THANK YOU goes to everyone who helped to make it a success, those who parked cars and braved the heat and stormy weather and also to those who helped plan and set up for parking. Thanks also go out to all who planned and served breakfast on Sunday morning and everyone who helped with this event. It would not have been such a success without all of your enthusiasm and willingness to reach out to those who visited our church and village festival. We were able to raise $3,378.00 for our church. Round Lake UMC s Garden Market Once again we will be setting up tables on the front yard of the church Sunday mornings to share the abundance of our gardens. We ll have our own small version of a farmer s market but without vendors. Here s how it works: You are invited to bring excess produce from your garden to share with others. We will be inviting others in the neighborhood to do the same. Garden Market, continued You and anyone who comes, with or without produce, will be invited to take what they can use from what is available that day. Last year we had a nice variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, leafy greens and herbs. Excess produce will be donated to the local food pantry. The Garden Market will begin on Sunday, July 29 th and run through Sunday, September 9 th. It will be open for business about 10:45 AM. In case of rain, it will be held inside the church. Hope to see you participating this year. UMW The UMW June dinner out was fun-filled and delicious at the Peddler s Bistro in Clifton Park. There was 15 ladies in attendance. The Antique Festival Breakfast on June 24 was a success. Fellowship with the antique dealers and community was had by all. Nancy LaPine is in charge of a continental breakfast at the Round Lake Craft Fair in August. Homemade coffee cakes, muffins, and brownies are needed. If you d like to help, please call Nancy at 928-0834. UMW s next meeting will be in September. We know you ll have a wonderful summer! Trustees A big thank you goes out to all who helped with the staining of the handicap ramp. It was a huge project with not only staining but replacement of lattice, scraping of windows and general clean up under and around the ramp. The removal of the trees around the parsonage has been on hold because of all the rain but we are confident that this will be completed in the near future. The Floor Committee has made their recommendations for the new floor in the Fellowship Hall. The Trustees have accepted their proposal and work should begin in mid-july. Thank you to Dave and Joyce Meurs, Donna Alaskey and Kathy Washburn for their work on this project. Trustees have also been looking at our utility bills to make plans that would benefit our yearly budget. Together with the Finance committee, we are trying to make our monthly bills more uniform to assist in paying these expenses. The next Trustee meeting has been changed from July 4 th to Wednesday, June 27 th at 7pm. Gary Mazzarelli who handles the church investments will be giving the Trustees and Finance committee a yearly assessment of these funds. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend.
