Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Every year during Lent we conduct the annual Partners in Charity Campaign, which we used to call the Bishop s Fund. It is for the support of the diocese s work of education and charity. Each year we meet or exceed our substantial goal of $50,000 due to your generosity. This year I d like to start a little early for two reasons. One, Lent begins very late this year. Two, I d like us to get involved in a bigger campaign to support the needs of our parish. When I came here four and a half years ago (time flies!), one of the first people I met was a religious educator in the parish who said, Father, can we get new windows for the parish center? The ones we have are in terrible shape. You can t open them and it gets very hot in those classrooms, especially in September. I looked around and counted more than 130 windows in the building and said to myself, Where are we going to get the money to pay for them? We re in debt as it is. Then I looked at the parking lot between Third and Fourth Streets, which was in terrible condition (especially the Third Street side) and every bid I got was more than $90,000. I thought we d never afford repaving. Remember we were $850,000 in debt at the time. Today, we have all new thermo-pane windows in the center, half of the parking lot is repaved (the rest will be done this year), the crack in the wall of the rectory garage is repaired (thanks especially to free labor provided by Gerry Richard), we ve kept up with repairs to the church roof, and we ve paid off $665,000 of our debt). How did we do it? I don t have a rich uncle who left me all his money (does anyone?). We did it bit by bit, putting aside money as we could, using your generous support very carefully. It s amazing how much it adds up when you take it one step at a time. Although the church and the rectory are handicapped accessible, the parish center isn t. More and more I am hearing people say they want to go to bingo or to the Fair or some other event, but they can t make the stairs in the center. It isn t feasible to put in a ramp because the first floor is so high off the ground and a ramp can only go up one inch per foot according to the zoning laws, and that would take up half the parking lot. But there are six different doors into the center. If we took the stairs out of one entrance we could put in an elevator. That will cost more than $100,000. That s a lot of money, I know, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. We will be looking into the Legacy of Hope Capital Campaign being run by the diocese. The advantage is that 40% of everything we raise will go back to the parish, and that money could pay for the elevator. This is a pledge campaign like the Project 2012, which parishioners make a multiyear pledge. I was never one who likes to ask for money, but I have learned from experience never to underestimate the loyalty of St. Cecilia s parishioners to their parish. You ll be hearing more about the Legacy of Hope campaign in the future. Right now, let s kick off the 2019 Partners in Charity strong, so that we can wrap that up and go on to the next thing, the way we always do, one step at a time. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso 3

Dear Friends in Christ, As we approach the 2019 Partners in Charity Appeal, I would like to thank all of you who made a sacrificial gift to the 2018 Appeal. I thank God for the generous support of the people of the Diocese of Worcester, and the leadership of pastors and parish chair people. Thanks to everyone s efforts we surpassed our $5 million goal in 2018 raising $5,076,252. Our 2018 appeal was supported by 16,454 families and individuals, which enables us to meet the financial needs of our ministries in this current fiscal year. I extend a special work of thanks to the 63 St. Paul Society members who contributed $329,310, and the 45 Holy Family Society members who donated $614,626. Also to be noted is that 110 priest of our diocese together contributed $161,116. These ministries serve tens of thousands of people in Worcester County, from families in our parishes to those on the fringe of society. Your continued generosity to this appeal has been and continues to be a compassionate sign of your own desire to face the needs of so many and to help them bear the struggles they are facing. As you reflect on the many gifts God has bestowed upon you this year, I encourage you to support the upcoming 2019 Partners in Charity Appeal. Thank you again for your generosity. With your help, we will continue to build up the Church in Worcester County and beyond. With every prayerful best wish, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J.
