I am so encouraged by the number of people who are reading God s Word together and the interactive discussion online is both stimulating and edifying. The synergy created through the unified reading has also spilled over into our Wednesday night attendance. Each week in January, the number of people in Wednesday night Bible Study has increased, on top of the some 300 other people involved in student, children, and worship ministries and the marriage class. It is exciting to see so many people on Wednesday nights involved in ministry! Let s keep it up as we grow together. Since its birth, the church has recognized Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8 as its marching orders for ministry. In Matthew 28, Jesus provided a more strategic overview of what the church is to be about: making disciples. In Acts 1:8, however, He provided a more tactical approach to accomplish His Great Commission. He told the first believers to be witnesses in Jerusalem, all Judea, Samaria, and the remotest parts of the earth. Historically, the church has understood and applied Jesus tactical explanation geographically. By that I mean, local churches have understood Jerusalem to speak of our local ministry field, all Judea to speak of our regional ministry field, Samaria to speak of our national ministry field, and the remotest parts of the earth to speak of our global ministry field. Certainly, a geographical understanding is both biblical and helpful in developing a plan to make disciples. But maybe we can look at Acts 1:8 from another perspective. We must continue to look at it geographically, because it serves as a reminder to take, intentionally, the Gospel to every corner of the globe, but it is time we began to look at it socially. Here is what I mean. Right now, in Shelby County, there are 50,673 documented foreign-born residents representing 27 different countries. Certainly, when you factor in undocumented residents, both numbers will increase. In other words, the remotest parts of the earth have come to our county! Memphis is a regional city. People from all over our region either drive in to Shelby County to work, or they relocate here for a job. Many need Jesus. For numerous reasons, men and women move their families to our area from all over the country. They need Jesus. As I have already demonstrated, the world has come to Memphis. Those newcomers need Jesus! If we believe the Bible like we claim we do, and if we take seriously the Great Commission of Jesus like we claim we do, then we must be intentional to go and the take the Gospel, but also get involved right here in Shelby County and take the Gospel. (continued on next page...) PAGE 1

BBC NEWSLETTER February 2019 Here is what I am asking you to do. First, pray! Satan has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the Gospel (2 Cor. 4:4). Ask God to send His Spirit to remove their blinders and convict them of the sin of unbelief. Pray also that God would send workers into the harvest. The need is great, but the workers are few (Luke 10:2). Pray also that God would give us the direction in reaching the remotest parts of the world, whether it s in South Asia or South Memphis. Second, in the spirit of Isaiah, say, Here am I. Send me. Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:18-20 aren t just for the few religious people. They are for all redeemed people! If you have trusted Jesus, then you are an ambassador for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through you for all people to be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:20)! Opportunities abound through our church, but you don t need a planned ministry to walk across the street, to speak up in the grocery store, to visit, intentionally, an international market to buy fruit and simply engage in conversation. Take the initiative, but also join others through our planned ministries. I have met with the director of City Reach (a Midsouth Baptist Association effort to reach our city) and we are praying and planning now to partner with an inner-city church to reach the world in Memphis. You can be a part! We have also been in discussions with International Mission Board personnel in Querétaro, Mexico and will soon establish a partnership to help engage an unreached people group in that modern, but unreached city. You can participate! So, pray, pay close attention for opportunities, listen for updates as we have them, and have a here I am, send me attitude so we can reach the nations, at home and abroad, for His glory! In Him, Michael PAGE 2
