Bhaktapur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its monuments reflect the glory days of the Malla Dynasty when art and architecture thrived in the three cities of the valley. In Bhaktapur Durbar Square, visit the Nyatapola Temple, the unique Temple that literally means five storied and rises above the city s landscape as a remarkable landmark. See Bhairavnath Temple, dedicated to Bhairav, the God of Terror, is a three-storied temple adjacent to Nyatapola Temple. Visit the pottery-making village of Thimi and see pottery being made by hand by artisans using timeless techniques. 4 Fri., 20 Kathmandhu Kopan Monastery, Nunnery & Boudha Visit Kopan Monastery overlooking Kathmandhu. We will meet one of the senior monks who will introduce us to Buddhism followed by a short round of meditation, teaching different techniques used and then

5 Sat., 21 Kathmandhu Namo Buddha guide us through it. Visit Kopan Nunnery and meet the Tibetan nuns, and visit the most exquisitely painted ornate temple you ll see on this trip. Visit Boudhanath Stupa, one of the most imposing landmarks of Kathmandu and a center of Tibetan Buddhism. The stupa is built on a massive three level mandala style platform and is 118 in height. The base of the stupa is adorned with 108 small images of the Amitabha Buddha and inset with prayer wheels. Stop in at a remarkable Thangka Studio and see them made as well as have the opportunity to purchase original art. Drive about 90 minutes to Namo Buddha (means I take refuge in the Buddha ). http://namobuddha.org/namobuddha.html From the Buddhist point of view, Namo Buddha is one of the most important religious sites in Nepal. There are three major Buddhist pilgrimage sites: Boudha Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa and Namo Buddha, and we will see all 3 on this trip. 6 Sun., 22 Kathmandhu Budhanilkantha & Patan Budhanilkantha, the sleeping Vishnu statue is 1400 years old and carved from a single block of stone. Then on to Patan, famous for their repoussé artisans who sell beautiful golden statues of many dieties, including Buddha, Tara and more. Patan Durbar Square is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the square is the Patan Museum, formerly a Malla palace, which houses bronze statues and religious objects, some dating back to the 11th century. Patan is known as the city of artisans and a paradise of fine arts, which includes a Singing Bowl studio we will visit. 7 Mon., 23 Kathmandhu Kathmandhu City & Swyambhunath 8 WEEK 1 ENDS Visit the markets of Ason and Thamel on foot and on a bicycle rickshaw ride (with driver). Visit Pote Bazaar (glass bead market) where Hindu women get their necklaces made. Thamel is the hub for trekkers to Everest and also a fun place to walk and shop for local crafts and souvenirs. Swayambhunath Temple called Monkey Temple by tourists but not locals is a sacred Buddhist shrine. Later drive to Kirtipur, a Newari village. Tues., 24 KTM>DEL Kathmandhu Kathmandhu to Delhi Depart Kathmandhu for Delhi. Roseate House Hotel. (Lunch not included today.)

Hotel Indus Valley or Grand Dragon/Leh 10 Thurs., 26 Leh, Ladakh Leh Visit Tibetan Children s Village school in Choglamsar and learn about the history and struggles of the Tibetan settlement in this region. https://www.sos-childrensvillages.org/wherewe-help/asia/india/leh-ladakh Visit Alchi Monastery, the oldest in Ladakh, over 900 years old, and famed for it s stunning murals that rival European frescoes. Later in the evening Interaction with Local Buddhist Monk at Hotel. 11 Fri., 27 Leh, Ladakh Leh Buddhist Monasteries Excursion to Thiksey monastery followed by Morning Puja ceremony. Thiksey resembles the famed Potala Palace where the Dalai Lama lived in Lhasa, Tibet. The Matreiya Temple here has an impressive 49 golden statue of the future buddha that was made for a visit by HH the 14 th Dalai Lama. Visit the grand Hemis and Stok monasteries. 12 Sat., 28 Leh, Ladakh Stakmo Village Visit the small village of Stakmo, which is not typically open for tourists. Lunch with our guide s family, plus enjoy cultural exchange and a rare opportunity to experience life in a small Himalayan Buddhist village up close. Meet the village Shaman (a woman) and have a chance to ask questions. 13 Sun., 29 Leh to Nubra Valley Khardungla Pass & Nubra Valley Drive 5 hours to the Nubra Valley over the Khardungla pass (17,582 ) and it s exhilarating, breathtaking views. The Nubra Valley (9000 ) was once on the trading route that connected eastern Tibet with Turkistan and is the most recently opened area of Ladakh. Stay at Mystic Meadow Earth Homes, an eco-tourism accomodation. 14 Mon., 30 Nubra Valley Hundar Village and Diskit Monastery Visit the other-wordly White Sand Dunes at Hundar. Then to Deskit: the main village of Nubra Valley, which has a small market consisting of a row of shops and a 500 year old Gompa (monastery) with a spectacular view of the valley. Hundar is a beautiful village of trees with a small monastery and ruins of a fort above the village. Then walk or take a short camel safari ride (Double-hump bactrian

Time to meditate there. Walk the busy village of McLeodganj. 19 Sat., 5 Dharamsala Nag Bhagsu Waterfall, Gyoto Monastery & Buddhist Nuns Visit the beatiful Nag Bhagsu temple and waterfall. Whisper your wishes into the statues ear for it to be fulfilled. See people swim in the sacred (and very cold) water from the mountain. Visit Gyoto Monastery, home of the 17 th Karmapa, who had a dramatic escape to India from Tibet in 2000. The first Karmapa was born in 1110, the first of the great Tibetan masters to establish an incarnating lineage. Since his death in 1193, successive Karmapas have incarnated for 16 lifetimes so far, and all have played a most important role in preserving and promulgating the Buddhist teachings of Tibet. The current Karmapa may or may not be at the Monastery, as he has been in the US for health reasons and has Visa issues he is aiming to resolve. Meet nuns at Dolma Ling Nunnery (or other) and possibly attend a morning puja or tea. 20 Sun., 6 Dharamsala Tibetan Gov t in Exile; Tibetan Museum Tibetan Govt in exile. Visit Parliament (if not in session) and learn about the Tibetan govt in exile. Visit and tour the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives & Museum, see the 11th century Tibetan manuscripts there. 21 Mon., 7 Dharamsala Norbulingka Institute Visit the stunning grounds of the Norbulingka Institute, where traditional Tibetan arts are taught. See students and masters creating woodcarvings, hand-embroidery, metal statue

making and thangka painting. We will take a 1 day class here to make a painting, most likely of one of the 8 auspicious symbols of Buddhism. 22 Tues., 8 Dharamsala TCV and Kangra Fort Visit and tour the Tibetan Children s Village in Upper Dharamshala. What started in 1960 as a place of refuge for destitute children from Tibet is now a village of 1500 chuldren from infants to grade 12. It was founded by the younger sister of HH Dalai Lama, Jetsun Pema. Students live here, some are orphans and some are not. Meet the kids, the director and see how they thrive in circumstances that most of us haven t experienced firsthand. Visit the hilltop location of Kangra Fort, which dates back to 4300 BC and is counted among the oldest forts in the Himalayas and the 8 th largest in India, covering 463 acres. When it was built, elephants carried enormous stone uphill. It s said to have had so many treasures that even Alexander the Great tried to overtake it unsuccessfully. Many treasure walls have been uncovered and there are said to be more yet undiscovered. A 7.8 earthquake damaged the fort in 1905 and killed 20,000 people yet it still stands. 23 END OF WEEK 3 WEEK 4 BEGINS 24 Weds, 9 DHM>DEL Dharamsala>Delhi Departure Day for Delhi. Surya Hotel, Delhi. Free time at leisure. Evening see the inlaid marble craftsmanship demonstration. Hotel: Courtyard Marriott Agra 26 Sat., 12 Agra Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Itmad-ud- Daulah Privately guided tour of Agra city: Visit the impressive Agra Fort, built by Emperor Akbar between 1567-1573. 27 Sun, 13 DEL>VNS Agra > Delhi > Varanasi famous Taj Mahal - Its perfect proportions and exquisite craftsmanship have been described as a vision, a dream, a poem, a wonder. Also visit small but elegant Itmad-ud-Daulah Tomb (1622) lyrically described as a jewel box in marble. The tomb is a combination of white marble, coloured mosaic, stone inlay and lattice work. Stylistically, it is the most innovative 17th century Mughal building. Departure Day: Drive to Delhi & fly to Varanasi The religious capital of Hinduism, Varanasi was previously known as Kashi - the city that illuminates. The present name is derived from the fact that the city is at the confluence of the rivers Varuna and Asi. It is also called CITY OF TEMPLES. The shimmering red and golden water of the Ganges when rays of dawn falls on them, the ghats (steps), the temples, and cremations all are an experience in themselves. Hotel: Madin Varanasi 28 Mon, 14 Varanasi Ganges Sunrise Pre-dawn guided private boat cruise on the Ganges at sunrise. This a magical time, as pilgrims and sadhus trickle out of the maze-like lanes and head for the ghats (steps to the river). Here they wash clothes, perform yoga asanas, offer prayers and take a ritual dip. Return to hotel for breakfast. Guided tour of Bharat Mata Temple, Durga Temple and the Benaras Hindu University and its art gallery. Bharat Mata Temple is known for its large and unusually detailed stone map of the Indian subcontinent. Time alotted for shopping for silks and other items. Return to the Ganges in the evening to witness the incredibly profound Aarti Puja. 29 Tues. 15 Varanasi Sarnath Golden Temple (Kashi Vishwanath) Sarnath (excavated site) home of Buddhism. Cancellation Policy: This trip cost is based on 4-6 people participating in each of the four segments (Nepal, Leh, Dharamsala, and Delhi- Varanasi-Agra). If there are less than 4 and your segment you be will advised of alternate options for the tour. If you decide against the options presented or your tour is cancelled by us you will be advised by July 11, 2019, and a full refund of will be given to you. It is our goal to give you the best tour experience possible and we will work with you to make it so. A trip cancellation charge will be levied as follows if notice is received: Before May 17, 2019: 45% of trip cost Between May 18-July 16, 2019: 66% of trip cost Between July 17 to start of trip: 100% of trip cost If your final payment is not received when due then it is considered cancelled by you and no refund is due. No refunds will be made for unused trip arrangements such as transportations, hotel accommodations, meals, sightseeing and other after the trip commences. DO NOT say that you are doing any volunteer work in India or visting any farms or livestock. That requires a different Visa. Just say it is touring. Your passport should have at least six months validity from the date of arrival in India. The passport should have at least three blank pages for stamping by the India Immigration Officer and for Nepal (if visiting there). International Travellers should have return ticket or onward journey ticket. If you been to countries that have yellow fever, you may need to carry your Yellow Fever Vaccination Card with you in India. That is the only REQUIRED vaccine. I find the online Visa application confusing at best. Do your best, the main thing is to get your name EXACTLY as on the passport. If after filling out your form and paying it says your payment didn t go through, check again in several hours. You will receive a pdf of your Visa. Print 2 copies and bring with you. Nepal Visa : The Visa is issued at the airport when we land. It s recommened that you have 3 recent passport photos of you on hand (I get mine at AAA for $8 or so). You ll need one of them for your Nepal Visa. The Visa is a15- day multiple-entry tourist visa (currently $25 USD); Visa fees are payable in USD so have cash available to pay this upon arrival. Money-changing and ATM services are available at the airport, but credit card payment is not a reliable option.
