Chapter 1 We are called - Pick a child to carry the Bible and lead the children in procession into the room singing song o Music Songs of Celebration CD Track 1 We are Called We are called to act with justice, We are called to love tenderly. We are called to serve one another, To walk humbly with God! - Go in procession to the prayer table & light the prayer candle. - Pray Leader: Let us pray. Make the Sign of the Cross A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Acts 17:16-34 [Read the Bible insert] The word of the Lord. - All: Thanks be to God. Called by name Baptism is about identity: who you are and what you want to become. A new life is beginning; and that person is called by name. Leader: Let us call to mind the goodness of God, who gives us all good things. God gives us life and Breath, and in him we live and move and have our being. - Instruct the children to come up one at a time and come to the water to be marked with the Sign of the Cross. Leader: [Name], God calls you by name to live in love with him always. Child: Amen. Leader: Let us join in the prayer that Jesus has taught us. - Have children join hands [note: page 145 for the words of the Lord s Prayer]. When Jesus disciples asked him to teach them to pray he gave them the Lord s Prayer. 1

Leader: Loving God, our source of life, bless us, protect us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life. All: Amen. - Sing We are called again. All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. We are called to act with justice, We are called to love tenderly. We are called to serve one another, To walk humbly with God! - Have the children go to their seats. - Go to the board that has these questions on it. - What did you see? - What did you hear? - What did you do? - Guide the children to reflect on the celebration by reviewing what happened in the prayer. Fill in their answers on the board. - Have the children open their books to Pg. 7 and fill in their responses. - Give the children blank name cards and have them write their name and decorate their card with drawings or words that will tell others something about them. -Ask for volunteers to share how their names were chosen. 2

Leader: Baptismal Name We are each given a special name at Baptism. Usually it is the name of some form of the name of a saint or Mary, the Mother of Jesus. It may be the name of an Old Testament person. The name given at Baptism does not have to be a saint s name. - Invite the children to share any stories they know about their own Baptism. - Have you ever been to a Baptism? - What did you see? -Read At our Baptism the priest or deacon calls us by name. The whole community welcomes us with great joy. We are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The priest or deacon makes the Sign of the Cross on our forehead. The Sign of the Cross is a sign we belong to God. - Ask the children to repeat after you. Allowing them time to repeat after each sentence. God calls us to a life of happiness with him. He promises us his grace. Grace is a sharing in God s own life. Imagine that! God wants us to be his children. He chooses us and wants us to love him and each other. How does it feel to be chosen by God? - Have the children read page 9 again silently. What one thing that happens when we are baptized? - Write responses on board with the question. How does God show his love for us? - Write responses on the board with the question. - Have the children look at the illustration on Pg. 11. What is happening? (People are talking in the marketplace.) 3

- Get a volunteer to read God Loves Us Pg. 11 (1 st paragraph) to check their answers. What is Paul doing? (He is teaching about God) - Gather the children in a story circle. What do you remember from hearing the Gospel from Acts 17:16-34? The story of Paul in Athens. - Reread the story out loud. Back to the Bible insert. What does Paul teach about God? How do you answer God s call to love him? The book of Acts of the Apostles describes how the Gospel spread from its roots in Jerusalem all the way to Rome. Back then Rome represented the ends of the earth. In the beginning or the Acts, Peter & John are the main preachers of the Gospel. After his conversion, Paul comes and extends the message to the Gentiles, beginning in Philippi, Thessalonia, Athens, and eventually going all the way to Rome. The Athenians were Gentiles (a person of a non-jewish nation or of non-jewish faith), and Paul encouraged them to give up idolatry (the worship of a physical object as a god). They would have to forsake their false gods and embrace the one true and living God, made known through Jesus. What does God want us to do? (To live as a family, to love him, to follow Jesus, pray, be kind to others, share with others, take care of creation) In the Share box on Pg. 13 write a sentence about one way that God shows his love for you. - Walk around to help any who need help with the activity. What are the sacraments? - Write their responses on a board. - Write Original Sin on the chalk boar. - Read pg. 15 What are the sacraments? But not the Bullet points. People disobeyed God and hurt their friendship with God. Adam & Eve were the first people and they disobeyed & were throw out of Paradise. Original means first, and this was the first sin. When we are born we are born with the freedom of choice, the freedom to choose to do right or to do wrong. God loves us even when we sin. Jesus was sent as a gift to show us that God still loves us and wants us to love him. The people were told do not do this, these are the rules, if you break the rules this is what is going to happen. Does it sound familiar? Who 4

tells us these things? The people disobeyed anyway and God had to put into play the consequences for their actions. Like our parents have to do with us when we break the rules (i.e. grounded). But He loves us so much that he wanted to say, but I still love you, and I want you to still love me. So God sends Jesus to take our sins away and make things right again. It s like if you did something really, really bad and your parents took the blame for it and paid the consequences for your actions. Why would they do that? That is how much God loves us. - Have the children read the bullets out loud one at a time and summarize what they mean. Pg15 Jesus showed us how to live in friendship with God. Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin. Jesus showed us that even when we turn from God s friendship, God will forgive us. This brings us to the Holy Trinity. The mystery of one God in three Persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is called the Trinity. Each of them can be called God. That s why we say God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. Belief in the Trinity is the most important part of our faith. When we make the Sign of the Cross, we are saying we believe in the Trinity. Think of it this way. God the Father is the creator. The master mind. God the Son, Jesus, is like the teacher or manager that came to us to teach us what God the Father expects from us and give us guidance. God the Holy Spirit is like the supervisor that stays with us to help us through our lives and helps us get things done. And because these three Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are still one being, God, no one is going to know us better than God. He created us and knows what He expects from us. He physically came to us and walked with us has felt our pains, hunger, sadness, fears, all our sufferings. And He is always there, every day, every minute, with each one of us ready to help when we need Him. That is what makes God so special. - Go to the flip chart turn to the Sacraments of Initiation & read Pg. 17 Jesus gave us the sacraments so we would know God s love, forgiveness, healing, and call to service. A sacrament is an outward sign that comes from Jesus. The seven sacraments give us grace. What is grace (sharing in God s own life)? Baptism is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation. In Baptism we are united to Jesus and receive new life. Like we used water in our opening celebration, water is also used in Baptism to represent our new life and original sin being washed away. We all descendents of Adam & Eve and because of this we are born with this original sin. When we get baptized we start a new life with no sin, until we commit it ourselves. 5

In Confirmation the Holy Spirit gives us strength to live as followers of Jesus. Confirmation is just what it sounds like; we confirm that yes, what our parents asked for us in Baptism, we are now asking for ourselves. That is to belong to Jesus and we accept His rules and love. Baptism and confirmation mark a special chapter, so we can only receive them once. It s like turning a year older or graduating to the next level of school. In the Eucharist we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus. We can participate in the Eucharist often. The Eucharist helps us to be more like Jesus. It helps us live and move and have our being in God. Kind of like eating food for nourishment, drinking water so we don t dehydrate, taking vitamins, we have to keep doing these things or we get weak and cannot function the way we are suppose to and we eventually die. These three sacraments together make us members of the Church. The Church is a sign of God s love. God calls us to live in community with other people who believe in him. The Church family helps us grow as God s children. What are some signs of God s love in your life? (Jesus, Sacraments, the Church, Creation, family) - Have the children turn to pg. 19 In the banner I want you to write a sentence to tell how you show you are a member of the Church. Then decorate your banner. Remember you are members of the Church at all times, not only when you are worshiping. You are members at school, at home, and at play. - Give them time to work on their banners - Pass out homework & worksheets. - Gather the children into a prayer circle with their books. Instruct them to leave their name plates. - Begin with the Sign of the Cross - Read story aloud People of Faith: about Francis of Assisi Pg.19 Teachers book. - Pray the prayer Leader: God, our Father, you give us all the living creatures. All: We praise and thank you. Leader: Jesus, our Savior, you give us life. All: We praise and thank you. 6

Leader: Holy Spirit, our Helper, you make us holy. All: We praise and thank you. Leader: Let us go forth in peace and love. All: Thanks be to God. - Sing song together: We are Called We are called to act with justice, We are called to love tenderly. We are called to serve one another, To walk humbly with God! 7
