Living Savior Lutheran Church 4616 Gharrett St Missoula, MT 59803 livingsaviormissoula.org 406.543.8222 Pastor Justin Cloute pastor@livingsaviormissoula.org February 5, 2017 Epiphany 5 WELCOME TO WORSHIP We are happy that you are here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord blesses you through his Word this morning. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to ask one of the greeters or anyone else who looks like they know what is going on. Look for signs to the restrooms near the table in the back of the entryway. Parents, we know how hard it can be to get to church in the morning and are so thankful that you have brought your child. We enjoy having children in worship, but also understand that sometimes you may want to take them out. For this reason, there is a small nursery room in the back of the church with an audio feed of worship. Current Sermon Series Our Savior s Sermon In our worship, we ll listen to portions of Jesus famous Sermon on the Mount. In this three-chapter sermon, Jesus enhances our understanding of God s Law and encourages our Christian living. Jan. 29 Blessed Now and Forever Feb. 5 Be Salt and Light Feb. 12 Love Your Enemies Feb. 19 Don t Worry! SERVICE THEME: OUR SAVIOR S SERMON: BE SALT AND LIGHT 1
IN MEMORY OF ME * INVOCATION P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS P: God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in love. He does not treat us as our sins deserve nor punish us according to our guilt. Instead he looks upon us in compassion, forgives our sin, and heals our lives. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and one another. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. * "Do This in Memory of Me" entire service by David Haas. P: As tender as a loving father is to his child, so gentle is God with you. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so vast is God's love for you. As far as east is from west, so far God removes your sin from you. He renews your life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Blessed be God who crowns us with mercy and love! C: Blessed be God forever! C (sings): This is the Feast 3
L: Worthy is Christ, the Lamb once slain, Whose blood was shed to give freedom for all. Power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and blessing; come give glory to Christ! C: Refrain L: Sing out with joy, all people of God! Join in the song of creation! Blessing and honor, glory and might to God and the Lamb forever more! C: Refrain L: This is the feast for praise and rejoicing, For the Lamb, the one who was slain, Will come forth now and begin God's reign! Sing all you people, sing Alleluia! C: Refrain (repeat) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and our ears to hear. Help us believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and do the things that are pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. FIRST LESSON Isaiah 58:5-9a God s people shine in the darkness through good deeds. When his people neglect good deeds by focusing only on themselves, it s like hiding a light under a bucket. 5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? 4
6 Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. 9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. VERSE OF THE DAY The leader sings the Verse of the Day, then the congregation may join on the repeat. 5
SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 2:9-12 God brings his people out of darkness and into his wonderful light. Now his people are the light of the world, glowing with God s mercy as examples in a world full of darkness. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end 6
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Rise, Shine, You People 556 THE SERMON TEXT Matthew 5:13-20 13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.. SERMON Let Your Light Shine in Love and Forgiveness Matthew 5:13-20 7
OFFERING Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. - 2 Corinthians 9:7 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. THE SACRAMENT P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a human being and revealed his glory as your only Son, full of grace and truth. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 8

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. C: Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. LAMB OF GOD 10
