MOBC COMMUNITY NEWS!! August 27 December 2, 2017 (Pulpit Attire is Green) We are in the season of KINGDOMTIDE, the color of KINGDOMTIDE is GREEN. The color GREEN symbolizes growth. KINGDOMTIDE runs from August 27th until Advent. KINGDOMTIDE is the newest of the seasons, dating no farther back than the late 1930 s. KINGDOMTIDE gives place for due attention to the eternal presence of Christ and His Kingship with the parallel emphasis upon our stewardship. Its emphasis on the kingship of Christ and His kingdom, challenges us in our daily lives and in every area of our existence. Theme For This Quarter: COVENANT WITH GOD This quarter considers the major covenants that God makes with people on behalf of the earth and humanity. Beginning with Noah, God promises goodness toward creation. Similar commitments are made with Abram, Phinehas, and Ezekiel. Ultimately, the covenant forms the foundation for the coming Messiah and salvation for the world. UNIT 2 CALLED INTO COVENANT WITH GOD Five lessons drawn from Genesis, Exodus, 2 Samuel, and Nehemiah illustrate God s partnership with people who respond and agree to obey His voice. God enter into covenant with Abraham, Moses, and David to work through history, establishing a kingdom that will ultimately bring forth the Messiah. Based on covenant with God, Israel is chosen as His special people. NEXT WEEK S LESSON: October 1, 2017 God s Covenant with Abram Genesis 15:1-6, 17-21 Desperate from past disappointments and failures, people fear a continued downward spiral of unfulfilling dreams and goals. How can people find hope to reach fulfillment in life? Although childless, Abram based his hope for descendants on the promises of his covenant with the faithful God. * MONDAY: The Lord s Words Become Actions Psalm 33:1-9 * TUESDAY: Abram Called and Blessed Genesis 12:1-3 * WEDNESDAY: God Promises Abram Land and Descendants Genesis 13:14-17 * THURSDAY: Angel Will Lead Conquest of Canaan Exodus 23:23-27 * FRIDAY: Promises of Land and Posterity Fulfilled 1 Kings 4:20-25 * SATURDAY: Abram an Example of Righteous Faith Romans 4:1-4 * SUNDAY: Abram Enters into Covenant With God Genesis 15:1-6, 17-21 Sermon Highlights: September 17, 2017 Title: Is It Really That Serious? Text: Romans 12:1-2 Main Idea: Is it really that serious presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice? Yes, it s that serious. It s an everyday priority. Paul is serious about us presenting our bodies as living sacrifices because of what he sees. Main Points: 1) Paul sees a connection. 2) Paul sees a condition. 3) Paul sees a challenge. For the full message order a CD or DVD of the service from the Media Ministry. CDs $5.00; Double CDs $7.00; DVDs $10.00 HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell some one else what Jesus has done in your life! Heavenly Father, I now understand my need to have my sins forgiven. I also realize that only Jesus because of His sacrifice on the cross can forgive my sin. I put my faith and trust in Jesus today. Please forgive me and become the Lord of my life. It is a practical study of typical problems we as Christians encounter as we seek to be the people of God in a secular society. It has a special message for Christians of any age who cannot tell the difference between involvement with the world and entanglement by the world. 4 Christian Education Ministry: A Vital Ministry of the Church What is Christian Education Ministry (CEM)?? Christian Education can be defined as programs and events intentionally offered by the church to teach faith to children, youth and adults. It exists for the purpose of enabling persons to become true Christians by supplying the means, knowledge and opportunity inspiration and motivation necessary for Christian growth. The concerns of Christian education evolve around the central concern of the gospel: human fulfillment found only within a meaningful relationship with God. Thus, the concern of Christian education is to bring the gospel to bear upon our lives. We cannot move from weak church membership (Sunday worship only) to working Christian discipleship until the full impact of the gospel of Jesus Christ weighs heavily upon our lives. The primary responsibility of the CEM at Mt. Olive is to plan, implement and evaluate the church s program of Christian education. This ministry has been given responsibility for providing leadership for the total teaching ministry of the church. (The other major ministries are proclamation, worship, fellowship, witness and service.) It is a little known or accepted fact in many churches that the teaching ministry under-girds all of the other ministries of the church. Christian education assists or enables the church to fulfill the Great Commission given by Jesus to the disciples and in turn to the Christian church. (Matt. 28: 19-20) There are some church ministries or programs that clearly belong to the teaching ministry for ongoing nurture and faith development, such as the church school, Bible study, and missions. There are also programs or ministries in which teaching plays a subordinate role. Such ministries have educational components but the primary function are the responsibility of those ministries such as the hospitality, deacons, trustees, finance ministries. In such cases, the education ministry will provide assistance in relationship to the education and teaching dimensions of these and other similar ministries. These ministries would receive assistance with how they may do a more intentional job of contributing to the disciple making process in the church. All teaching should lead to the ultimate objective of producing well-rounded Christians who faithfully engage in Christian discipleship. To achieve a quality Christian education ministry, Mt. Olive, the following have been developed for the church: Mission Statement: The mission of the Christian Education at Mt. Olive Baptist Church is to equip the congregation for the holistic ministry that will move persons forward in their spiritual growth. To achieve its mission, the church must bring the Christian message to life through a variety of efforts that will enable persons to daily live holistic lives physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. Goals: 1. To provide learning experiences for persons of all ages that will enable them to grow in their understanding of the gospel and how it relates to their daily living. 2. To equip persons to deal critically and creatively with emerging issues and respond in faith as a growing disciple of Jesus Christ.

6 Welcome back to Sunday School! In celebrating Christian Education Month, Mount Olive Baptist Church, Sunday School would like to welcome you back to Sunday School. Sunday School is a place of enlightenment where the people of God teach and learn the Word so that they may grow and be rooted in their faith. Unlike the corporate worship experience, it is an environment where questions can be asked and concepts can be immediately explained. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in Sunday School. It will promote kingdom knowledge and glorification. The fun, joy, and blessings of gaining and sharing acquired knowledge will be the fruit of your efforts. Sunday School Mount Olive Baptist Church Rev. Darryl G. Thompson, Pastor 8775 Mount Olive Avenue Glen Allen, VA 23060 (804) 262-9614 www.mobcva.org

7 1. Age Targeted Teaching: Where else can your kids get Biblical instruction that's focused toward their developmental abilities? 2. Friends: In Sunday School, your child will build positive friendships with their peers by discovering God's Word together. 3. It's Fun: Sunday School is not Disney Land, but our teachers do work hard to teach the Bible in ways that are relevant and fun for kids. 4. Spiritual Mentors: A dedicated teacher can be a Christian role model who supports you and helps inspire the faith of your child. 5. Systematic Bible Learning: Our curriculum is designed to give a broad foundation, so children will understand how all the parts of Scripture point to Christ. 6. Praying Teachers: Our teachers consistently pray for your child's faith to grow. Coming to Sunday School gives another occasion for God to answer those requests. 7. Big Reward For a Small Investment: If you're already coming to church, just come a little earlier or stay a little later. 8. Send the Right Message: Making Sunday School a priority shows your kids that God's Word really does matter. 9. Adult Bible Fellowship: While the children enjoy their class, you can fellowship with other adults in your own Bible study group. 10. Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV): Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
