OPENING PRAYER Thank you, Lord, for picking us up after we have fallen, for steadying us when we were shaky, for assuring us when we wavered, for pardoning us when we have sinned, and thank you, Lord, for calling us back into your presence in this place. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Forgive us, Lord, not only for committing sins, but also for rationalizing and downplaying them. We call them mistakes and bad judgments. We say that we are no worse than others, and perhaps a bit better. But in the end, we know that we stand defenseless before you, a holy and righteous God. Yes, we also know that you are a God of mercy and love, so we come boldly, asking for and embracing your grace. Amen WORDS OF ASSURANCE Even when we seem to have lost contact with God, we know that God still loves us and draws us back to him. *DOXOLOGY Gloria Patri No. 579 Congregation *THE APOSTLES CREED (page 14 in the front of the hymnal) Congregation PRAYER REQUEST If you have a concern or request that you would like included in the Pastoral Prayer, please jot it down on the index card found in the pew rack and hand it to a deacon as they walk the aisle during the singing of the Welcome Song. WE PROCLAIM GOD S WORD PRAYER OF PETITION (For cleansing) Touch our tongues, Lord. Cleanse them of harsh words, of angry words, of cursing words, of gossiping words. Help our tongues to be instruments of your healing, soothing, loving, and constructive power. Touch our souls, Lord. Cleanse them of the resentment that festers, from the anger that poisons, from the hurt feelings that smolder. Touch our bodies, Lord. Cleanse them from the lust that contaminates, from the pain that discourages, from the weaknesses that limit. Touch our minds, Lord. Cleanse them from the limitations that impede us, from the darkness that discourages us, from the distractions that hinder our focus, from the doubt that clouds our vision.
