Today s Agenda Discuss the origins of Christianity

Distribution of Cao Dai The Cao Dai religion has about 6 million followers, most of whom are in Vietnam.

Finally, Distribution of Zoroastrianism Zoroastrianism was founded 3,500 years ago in Persia (now modern day Iran). Most Zoroastrians can be found today in India and Iran.

Where are the Zoroastrians?

What is Zoroastrianism? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvynws_uaes

Next To understand how religions grow and spread, we will look at the origins and diffusion of the big 4 religions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avfl6ubzlv4

The key point Universalizing religions like Christianity, Islam and Buddhism have well defined places of origin and widespread and well documented patterns of diffusion.

The key point An ethnic religion such as Hinduism has unknown origins and limited diffusion.

The Origin of Christianity. Christianity was founded upon the teachings of Jesus, who was born in Bethlehem between 8 and 4 BCE, and died in 30 CE.

The Origin of Christianity. Raised as a Jew, Jesus gathered a small band of disciples and preached the coming of the Kingdom of God.

The Origin of Christianity. The 4 gospels of the New Testament Matthew, Mark, Luke and John document miracles and extraordinary deeds that the writers believe Jesus performed.

The Origin of Christianity. Jesus was referred to as Christ from the Greek word for the Hebrew word messiah which means anointed.

The Origin of Christianity. In the third year of his mission, Jesus was arrested and put to death as an agitator and on the third day after his death, his tomb was found empty.

The Origin of Christianity. Christians believe Jesus died to atone for human sins and was resurrected to give people hope for Salvation.

Next, let s look at the Branches of Christianity.

The Roman Catholic Branch Roman Catholics recognize the Pope as possessing a universal primacy or authority and they believe that the Church is infallible in resolving theological disputes.

The Roman Catholic Branch God conveys his grace directly to humanity through seven sacraments:

The Roman Catholic Branch #1 Baptism

The Roman Catholic Branch #2 Confirmation

The Roman Catholic Branch #3 The Eucharist (Bread and Wine)

The Roman Catholic Branch #4 Penance

The Roman Catholic Branch #5 The Anointing of the Sick

The Roman Catholic Branch #6 Holy Orders

The Roman Catholic Branch #7 Matrimony

The Orthodox Branch The split between the Roman Catholic Branch and the Orthodox branch dates to the 5 th century because of a rivalry between the Pope of Rome and the Patriarch of Constantinople.

The Orthodox Branch The split became final in 1054 when the heads of the two churches excommunicated each other.

The Protestant Branch Protestantism began with the Reformation movement of the 16 th century.

The Protestant Branch Martin Luther began the Reformation movement by posting 95 theses or complaints against the corruption of the Catholic Church on October 31, 1517.

The Protestant Branch According to Luther, individuals have primary responsibility for achieving personal salvation through direct communication with God.

The Protestant Branch Grace is achieved through faith rather than through sacraments performed by the Church.
