----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- Order of Worship December 30, 2018 Reflection If we resist the Bible, our only remaining basis for truth is our feelings and/or popular opinion. That s a dangerous place to be. -Scott Sauls Prelude As worship begins, please silence your electronic devices. Call To Worship Revelation 15 & 19 Leader: Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty! All: Just and true are your ways, King of the Nations! Leader: Who will not fear you, Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All: All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. Leader: Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns! 1

All: Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! Song Holy, Holy, Holy! Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who wert and art and ever more shall be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, 2

in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name In earth, and sky, and sea; Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! Prayer of Adoration Almighty God, you gave your Son, Jesus Christ, to be the light of the world. We praise and magnify your holy Name that in him you have revealed the wonder of your saving love to all people. With those of old who brought their tribute to his feet, confessing him as King of heaven and earth, we now present the worship of our grateful hearts, asking you to give us grace to give ourselves to you, through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and 3

was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Doxology Old Hundredth Praise God whose light fills all the earth Whose love we see in Jesus birth Whose Spirit forms one family Whose grace brings peace and harmony. Amen. Prayer of Confession Almighty and Gracious Father, who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over transgression? Your mercy is greater than our sin, and your compassion stronger than our shame. Forgive us and cleanse our hearts. Free us from our enslaving sin and selfrighteousness. Grant us willing spirits, that love what you love and hate what you hate. Make us a gracious presence in an ungracious world longing for peace and joy. May we be faithful vessels who carry Jesus. We pray in His Name, Amen. 4

Private Confession Song How Deep the Father s Love for Us How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, Bring many sons to glory Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that left Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ 5

His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom Words of Pardon and Comfort I Peter 2:9-12 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Song The Solid Rock My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name. Chorus: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand. 6

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In ev'ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil. (Chorus) His oath, his covenant, his blood Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. (Chorus) When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found; Dressed in his righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne. (Chorus) (Children through Kindergarten are dismissed for Children s Church; they will return for Communion.) Prayer of Intercession (Concluded by the Lord s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is 7

the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. High Desert Highlights See Announcements on page 15 Offertory Scripture Genesis 32:22-32 22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, Let me go, for the day has broken. But Jacob said, I will not let you go unless you bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 Then he said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed. 29 Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my 8

name? And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel saying, For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered. 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob's hip on the sinew of the thigh. Sermon: Dan Rose Limping Into A New Year Rev. Song: Vision Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true Word; 9 Be Thou My

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High king of heaven, my treasure Thou art. High king of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O ruler of all. Celebration of the Lord s Supper This is a time for all people to seek the Lord. For Christians, the Lord s Supper (also called Communion or The Eucharist, which means thanksgiving ) is a time to meet with their Savior by faith, to be 10

strengthened and renewed by Him as they eat the bread and drink the elements. All baptized Christians who trust in Christ alone as their Savior and Lord, belong to a church that embraces the gospel, are at peace with their fellow neighbor, and seek strength and grace to live more faithfully to Christ, are invited to participate. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer (see Prayers on page 14) and to consider more deeply your relationship to Jesus Christ. We also ask that children who have not yet publicly professed their faith in Christ refrain from partaking until doing so. Both wine (red) and grape juice (white) are offered in each serving tray. Words of Institution Memorial Acclamation Minister: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of the faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again! Minister: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. All: Therefore let us keep the feast. Minister: The gifts of God for the people of God. Communion Song For The Bread For the bread which you have broken, For the wine which you have poured, 11

For the words, which you have spoken, Now we give you thanks O Lord. By this pledge that you do love us, By your gift of peace restored, By your call to heaven before us, Sanctify our lives O Lord. With our sainted ones in glory, Seated at our Father s board, May the Church that waits now for Thee, Keep love s tie unbroken Lord. In your service Lord defend us. In our hearts keep watch and ward. In the world where r you send us, May your kingdom come O Lord Prayer of Thanksgiving Lord, you have put gladness in our hearts; you have satisfied our hunger with good things. In giving all, you have not withheld from us your own dear Son. How can we withhold anything from you, our Lord and our God? Renew us day by day with the gift of your Spirit, that we may give ourselves completely to your service and walk with joy in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 12

Song Go, Tell It On The Mountain Refrain: Go, tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go tell it on the mountain That Jesus Christ is born! While shepherds kept their watching O'er silent flocks by night, Behold throughout the heavens There shone a holy light. (Refrain) The shepherds feared and trembled When lo above the earth Rang out the angel chorus That hailed our Savior's birth (Refrain) Benediction Postlude Down in a lowly manger The humble Christ was born, And brought us God's salvation That blessed Christmas morn. (Refrain) 13

All songs used by permission. CCLI License #11101021 Prayers Prayer for Those Searching for Truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief: Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but 14

through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin: Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment: Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. Announcements Next Sunday we will gather for worship at 10am at the McLeod Family YMCA. Pastor Dan will begin a new sermon series. As 2018 wraps up, a reminder that for your year-end giving to count towards tax year 2018, we must receive your gift by December 31 or your donation 15

must be postmarked on or by that date. Thank you for your generous support of HDPC! 16
