Christ the Conqueror 1 st Sunday in Lent March 4 & 5, 2017

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: We are sinful people surrounded by sinfulness and destined for destruction. The Reformation-era hymn writer Lazarus Spengler sums up the reality very directly: All mankind fell in Adam s fall; One common sin infects us all. On our own, we cannot remedy the dreadful situation. But God can. And God has in Christ Jesus. We are debtors to the exceeding grace of God. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Almighty and eternal God, Your kingdom is everlasting and Your house is forever. Grant us grace to live with unfailing confidence, knowing that You have delivered us from sin and the power of death and Satan, and have built for us an everlasting house, where we shall rejoice in Your eternal presence. This we ask for the sake of Jesus, the almighty Conqueror and our gracious Savior. Amen. THE ORDER OF WORSHIP DIVINE SERVICE HS98 page 6 HYMNS 860, 873, 856, 855, 850 2

Jesus defeats Satan in our place not by using His power as God, but by His perfect obedience in His perfect humanity. Jesus defeats Satan not by miracles, but by quoting the Scriptures and living according to it. This should cause us great joy for two reasons. First, because we see Jesus win the victory for us. 7

Second, because here Jesus shows us how to stand in that victory: on the Word of God alone.
