CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST CONGREGATIONAL 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai`i Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost World Communion Sunday, October 7, 2018 Neighbors in Need Sunday Pre-Service Music Congregational singing Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD Words of Greeting Pastoral Welcome Prelude: Be Still and Know That I Am God -- Mansfield Millie Daikawa Rev. Eric S. Anderson Call to Worship Leader: Come gather in the house of God s dwelling. People: Come sing glad songs of thanksgiving; come proclaim God s wondrous deeds. Leader: Come gather in God s house to worship. Hymn #323: Little Children, Welcome (v. 1-4) Invocation God of the journey, we have chosen to follow your way of justice and peace. It is not a straight or easy path, and there are many obstacles in our way, but your steadfast love is before us, ever guiding us onward. May we continue to follow you faithfully with our whole selves, never losing faith in our goal. Amen. Gloria Patri: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen. Amen.

WE SHARE THE WORD OF GOD Anthem: One Bread, One Body -- John B. Foley Na Leo Ni`o Lani Time with Children Please rise if you are able and join hands in a circle for the Lord s Prayer in unison: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Scriptures: Psalm 26 Mark 10:2-16 Sermon: Children, Come Pastoral Prayer/Prayers of People WE RESPOND IN WORD AND DEED Hymn #332: As We Gather at Your Table (v. 1-3) Lay Reader -- Invitation to the Offering: We are made in God s image; we reflect some small part of God s glory. We are made in God s image, but we are not God; we do not reflect all that God is, and we also reflect what God is not. At this moment this morning, let us reflect a portion of what God is: loving, generous, and giving. Let our offering be received. Offertory: Andante Con Moto -- Guilmant Doxology: Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost Amen

Prayer of Dedication Bless these gifts to your service, O God. Let a gleam of your great glory be found in them, a sign of who you are. Amen. Hymn #349: I Come with Joy (v. 1-3) Invitation Consecrating the Bread and Cup THE LORD S SUPPER Pastor: On this World Communion Sunday, let us come to God for the breaking of the bread. Let us pray: People: God of vast creation, God of heaven and earth, we thank you for the bread of life. Pastor: We recall the time when you preserved the children of Israel by leading them to Egypt, where your prophet Joseph had gathered grain. People: There on our Communion table, O God, is bread baked from wheat to keep us whole and sound. Pastor: We recall the time when they fled slavery into a barren land, and you fed them with your manna. People: There on our Communion table, O God, is rice, which nourishes so many hungry people every day. Pastor: We recall the time your people found a promised land, rejoicing in its plenty. People: There on our Communion table, O God, is banana bread, in which we taste the sweetness of life. Pastor: We recall the time when Israel was taken into exile, and they sought to worship you in a new land. People: There on our Communion table, O God, is ulu, breadfruit, which has nourished Polynesian peoples wherever they have traveled. Pastor: We recall that in your wisdom and mercy, O God, you have never left your people hungry when your Spirit might provide. People: There on our Communion table, O God, is poi from taro root, which keeps our bodies rooted in the land.

Pastor: And we recall, O God, that when your people were starved for your Spirit, you sent us Jesus, to fill us and make us whole. People: There on our Communion table, O God, is an empty bowl, which reminds of the hungry we still yearn to feed, and reminds us of the love of Christ which fills our souls from depth to height. Sharing the Bread and the Cup The pastor continues with the prayer. Please come forward, as you are able, to share in the bread of life and the cup of salvation then return to your pew and remain standing. If you wish to receive communion in your seat, please remain seated, and we will come to you.
