Oakland Baptist Church From The Pastor s Pen- THE ACORN May May 2013 Well, it s spring! My vehicles are turning green, my throat is scratchy, my eyes itch, Claritin is my best friend, and...we have been blessed recently with eggs. Matter of fact within three days we were given three dozen! When I said, what are we gonna do with all these eggs, my country girl gave me one of those looks. It s the you ve got to be kidding or stupider than you appear look. Ever seen that look before? No problem, we re having egg salad and i m taking hard boiled eggs for lunch in my salad. Well, I thought, (sure didn t say anything), that will work. So the lil bitty blue eggs, the brown eggs, and even some speckled ones went into the pot. They were changed from one thing to another in a matter of moments. I read the following quote recently: It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad. --C.S. Lewis It amazes me to think that God intends eggs to turn into birds, yet if not allowed to hatch, then they can be a yummy food source for us. Things may not always turn out the way they were intended, but we can honestly say that God works together for the good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28). Marriages that have conflict; Babies born outside of marriage; Troubled teens who suffer consequences of their decisions; Bankruptcies, foreclosures, and job loss can even lead to better things... I am truly thankful that truly God will turn my mess into a message and my test into a testimony. Because of the Lord s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. --Lamentations 3:22-23 Blessings to you today and every day! It s a joy to serve Jesus as your pastor... Basic training includes learning to live above your circumstances, even while interacting on that cluttered plane of life. You yearn for a simplified lifestyle, so that your communication with Me can be uninterrupted. But I challenge you to relinquish the fantasy of an uncluttered world. Accept each day just as it comes, and find Me in the midst of it all. Talk with Me about every aspect of your day, including your feelings. Remember that your ultimate goal is not to control or fix everything around you; it is to keep communing with Me. A successful day is one, which you have stayed in touch with Me, even if many things remain undone at the end of the day. Do not let your to-do list (written or mental) become an idol directing your life. Instead, ask My Spirit to guide you moment by moment. He will keep you close to Me. In November, we will sponsor a Church-wide packing party. Information regarding this event will be posted as we get closer to the date. Thank you for supporting our on-going mission project. Join us for our next Beth Moore study beginning Monday, May 13 at 6:45pm! When Godly People Do Ungodly Things: Arming Yourself in the Age of Seduction. In this biblical guide to authentic repentance and restoration, Beth examines why devoted followers of Jesus Christ can fall into the traps of Satan. Christians are still subject to Satan's attacks. He is determined to disrupt the lives of believers, destroy their ministry, and steal their joy. Sadly, those who have "fallen" may not recognize the devil's schemes until they have already been caught in a snare of defeat. This 6 week Bible study is written in three parts. The first part is a warning to believers; the second part shows women how to prepare for attacks by the Enemy; the third part is directed to those who have been snared by seduction, and compassionately points the way back to God. If you d like to join us for this study, please contact Sherry Alston ( 804.855.7446). Honor your Mother by providing new socks and underwear for the Children of Coeburn. Guidance Counselors at schools in Southwest Virginia encounter children every week that come to school with no clean socks or underwear. Let s make Mom proud and let her know you purchased items in her honor to help a needy child. Sizes elementary school age through high school (adult sizes). For more information, please see WOM members. Collection day Undie Sunday Mother s Day, May 12 th Coeburn Summer Lunch Missions Project Peanut Butter and Jelly for Coeburn: Deadline May 19 TH.
