FEBRU ARY 20 16 CIRCUIT RIDER PEARL RIVER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 130 FRANKLIN AVENUE, PEARL RIVER, NY 10965 (845)-735-2241 Worship for February February 7 th : Fourth Sunday after Epiphany HOLY COMMUNION FROZEN in Fear: Let it God 1 John 4:16-19 LENT SELF-DENIAL COIN BOXES The time period between the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday (2/10/15) and through Good Friday, is a time when Christians have traditionally given up something or denied themselves something they enjoyed, as personal recognition that God gave up his son on the cross for us. As in past years we are again distributing Lenten Self-Denial coin boxes. Each day please consider placing 50 cents or more in the coin box as a symbol of what you have denied yourself. The box holds between $25.00 and $30.00 in quarters. Additional coin boxes will be available at the rear of the church for anyone who needs one. Please return your coin box at any of the PRUMC Holy Week services. If your name is not on the box, please write it on along with your envelope number. Page 2 CIRCUIT RIDER--FEBRUARY 2016 Feed the Pig To support: Souper Bowl of Caring to support the local food pantry People to People Since 1990, young people have been leading the charge and inspiring others to collect dollars and food around the time of the Big Game. These groups then give 100% of their donations to local charities. More than $110 million has been collected, changing the nation s largest weekend of football into the largest weekend of caring. THE GAME IS BIG. OUR MISSION IS BIGGER. Learn more at souperbowl.org So look for a Souper Bowl pot in our sanctuary on Sunday, February 7th, and drop $1 (or more) or a can (or more) of food in a soup pot to support this worthy cause. Donations will be delivered to the People to People Food Pantry. Thank you for your support. Vigil and Service of Prayer and Healing SAVE THE DATE--Friday March 4 th The Sanctuary will be open all day for prayer and meditation on Friday March 4 th from 6am 7pm. Someone will be available all day to offer prayer and anointing. All are welcome. 2016 Train Show: The Dining Car will be open 4 weekends this year. If you can spare a few hours to help we will find a place for you. Jo Ann Lee has a signup sheet for helpers and donations of supplies. Home baked cakes and pies are always welcome. Right now we have a great supply of soda but do need juice boxes, Yoo Hoo, coffee or tea. Sabrett hot dogs or cash donations will be helpful. I will purchase the other supplies. The Train Club are a great group to work with. Peace And Love, Helen D'Agostino

CIRCUIT RIDER--FEBRUARY 2016 Page 3 Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, Master, save me! Jesus didn t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand. Matthew 14: 22-33 The Message Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I was a young mother of two boys. My youngest son, Mark was not even a year old. I loved my life, but I also felt like God was calling me to something else. My husband Steve and I had only recently joined the Cranford UMC, when another young mother asked me to attend a women s retreat. Honestly, I wasn t really sure if I could do it. It was an all-day retreat and Mark was still nursing and I didn t even really know any of the women. I was filled with excuses as to why I shouldn t attend, but something inside told me I needed to be there. And so on that wintery February Saturday, almost exactly 13 years ago, I sat with fellow sisters of faith and heard Matthew 14:22-33 read. In that moment, I realized God was asking me to step out, to trust even when the waters churned beneath my feet and to know that God s hand would always be reaching out for me. Three months after that retreat, I followed God s voice and applied for Seminary. I share this story with you, because too often we let the voices of our excuses, our past failures, our hesitations and our fears drown out God s voice. And so we never step out of the boat and risk seeing something new. Throughout Lent we will be focusing on a book by Eric Elnes entitled Gifts of the Dark Wood. It is about seeing life through new eyes, recognizing that experiences of failure, emptiness, and uncertainty are as critical for finding our way through life as they are unavoidable. How can the struggles of life lead us to a deeper spiritual awakening? Will you be willing to step out and trust that Christ s hand will already reaching down for you? In Christ s love, Pastor Cyndi SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER GROUP Gather with us Sunday mornings at 9:30am in Pastor Cyndi s office for a time of prayer and contemplation. We will focus on praying for the many people and situations on our prayer list and prayers lifted up for our nation and world. When: First Tuesday of Every Month February 2 Time--9:30 AM Where: Hogan's Diner Why: A Chance to talk and connect.
