Funeral/ Memrial Services Althugh funeral/memrial services may be held in funeral hmes, the best place fr cnducting a funeral service upn the death f a church member is in the sanctuary f the church t which he r she belnged. At such times f lss, all may be reminded by even the place f service f what ur hpe and assurance are in Jesus Christ. Therefre, all members f Olivet are encuraged t use the church building fr funeral/memrial services. There can be alternative methds fr cnducting services at the time f death. These culd include 1. Funeral service which always invlves the presence and final dispsitin f a deceased persn. 2. Memrial service is any service, which cmmemrates a death, but des nt invlve the presence r dispsitin f the bdy, hwever the cremains f the deceased may be present. 3. Private graveside service fr family members as sn after death as pssible. (We will use the term funeral service in this dcument, but it applies t all types f burial.) The pastr will meet with the family t plan the funeral service. Date and Time f Funerals Dates and times fr funerals at Olivet are t be arranged in cnsultatin with the church ffice based n availability f a pastr, the facility, and the preferences f the deceased s family. Wh Will Officiate? Pastral ethics require that Olivet s pastrs cnduct all funeral services held at Olivet, unless by agreement with anther pastr, he/she is invited t share in the funeral r act n behalf f the pastr f Olivet. Any requests fr anther pastr r lay persn t fficiate r assist in the service must be apprved by Olivet s pastr/s. Structure f the Funeral Service A funeral service held in the church is a service f wrship, celebrating the deceased persn s life and the prmise f eternal life thrugh Jesus Christ. Cnsequently, all parts f the service are t be cnsistent with the present wrship practices f Olivet Beacn f Light Lutheran Church. Generally, the utline fr the funeral and burial service, as fund in the Lutheran Bk f Wrship will be fllwed. The family may suggest ther items t be included in the service, with the apprval f the pastr. The celebratin f the Sacrament f Hly Cmmunin, shared in cmmunity arund the familiar center f the table, is full f healing pwer fr thse wh grieve. This sacrament is the gracius sign f the cmpletin f baptism, the fretaste f the heavenly banquet, and the anticipatin f all the faithful reunited befre Gd and Christ, the Lamb f Gd. Therefre, it is apprpriate t share Hly Cmmunin as part f the funeral service. All thse gathered fr the service will be invited t the Table. Family participants as readers and cmmunin assistants in the service are welcmed. 2

Funeral Music Nrmally, Olivet Wrship Team members (musicians and slists) will play at all funerals in the church, as he/she is familiar with the instruments and sund systems. If we d nt have a team member available fr the service, she/he will make a reasnable effrt t prvide a suitable replacement. We can als arrange with the family the use f pre-recrded music. Please nte that the fees charged fr musicians and slists vary depending n the musicians. Music perfrmed at a service f Christian burial is understd as an act f wrship, ffered t Gd in devtin, thanksgiving and praise. Therefre, all music used during the funeral service (including prelude and pstlude) must be sacred in nature and apprved by the pastr and the Music Leader. The pastr will cnsult with the family regarding special requests fr music t be used during the service. Services by Fraternal Orders, Ldges etc. Services by fraternal rders, ldges, r ther rganizatins are nt apprpriate at a Lutheran funeral service.
