GENESIS The Book of Beginnings, the Seed Bed for all major themes in the Bible In the Beginning God. God is eternal, no beginning or ending This is the story of the beginning of God s dealings with the earth Adam was created in the image and likeness of God God s family. Garden in Eden home for Adam, place from which to fulfill his commission to be fruitful and multiply, subdue the earth and take dominion. Eve taken from Adam s side to work together. They were called Adam until after the fall and Adam called his wife s name Eve.

Gen. 1-3 Creation, commission, temptation, fall of man. When Adam ate from the forbidden tree, he disobeyed God and obeyed Satan, thereby giving Satan authority. God was cut off from His family. His plan of redemption was in place already. The atmosphere changed! From this point on God s plan of restoration began. 1600 years from creation Noah was the only righteous man on the earth. He saved his family and the earth by the ark. New beginning. God is getting His word back into the earth through the covenant promises and rainbow.

Abraham one man obeyed God, followed God by faith, received promises, covenant and heir to continue the righteous line. From one man (first fruit) came a nation, a first fruit nation to God. (2000 years from creation). Abraham s life was an example of living by faith. Isaac the promised heir, offered as a sacrifice. Jacob 12 sons became 12 tribes, who ultimately became the nation of Israel. Joseph sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers. God used him to save his family and the future nation. During a time of famine, Joseph was reunited with his family and brought them to Egypt for provision. After Joseph died, the Pharoah of Egypt began to put hard tasks on the Children of Israel. They became slaves. THE BOOK OF GENESIS COVERS APPROXIMATELY 2400 YEARS OF EARLY HISTORY.

Exodus Deliverance, Formation of Nation and Worship Children of Israel were in slavery in Egypt Moses was born to be the deliverer 40 years in Egypt, 40 years in the dessert taking care of sheep, 40 years of leading Israel through the wilderness. Moses was God s representative to set His people free (as promised to Abraham). Let my people go. Moses led the Children of Israel out of Egypt and through the wilderness for 40 years. God revealed Himself to them as their covenant God, provider, healer, warrior, etc. They received The Torah (teachings) of God at Mt. Sinai. They built the place for God s presence on the earth, the Tabernacle. They guarded the oracles of God throughout history. They are prophetic people demonstrating the promised redemption and peace to come.

Leviticus How to Live with Holy God! The book of The Torah (teachings) of God. How to approach a Holy God Sacrifices (sin & fellowship) Priesthood and consecration Cleansing Holiness Feasts (Lev. 23, 7 feasts, calendar) The Land (Lev. 25, Sabbath year rest, Jubilee year rest)

Numbers The Wilderness Journey A review of the deliverance of Children of Israel Meeting God at Sinai Formation of camp and tabernacle Numbering of Children of Israel Order of travel Spies sent into the promised land Children of Israel refuse to go into the land because of giants. Because of their disobedience, they had to wander around for 40 years until the unbelieving generation died off. New generation New numbering

Recap: Creation God and His family Fall Sin separates God from His family; gives first promise of a Redeemer (the seed) Earth became so wicked only one righteous man left. Noah was saved; promise intact. God called Abraham one man to make a sure covenant and promises to him and his family. God sealed it by asking for Abraham s son so He could give His son. From Abraham comes a nation that is given the oracles of God. The sacrifices and feasts are all pictures of the sacrifice of Jesus, The Lamb.

The worship system is in place on the earth through the tabernacle which is a picture of heavenly worship. The people are prepared to take the promised land, but fail. A 40 year delay. The new generation is numbered. God has patiently moved forward with His plan of Redemption and restoration. Satan has tried to hinder and delay but God s plan is on track. All this has taken 2,488 years!

Joshua (1400 1375 BC) Taking the Land New leader of Children of Israel (80 years old) Led the people to possess the promised land the walls of Jericho came down. The Children of Israel settled in their allotted area by their tribes. The tabernacle remained at Shiloh. Joshua led the people in confirming the covenant again. Canaan land is the promised land. It is a picture of our land of promise through the Word of God.

Joshua led the Children of Israel into the Promised Land. They take the southern territory They take the northern territory

Enemies Philistines Canaanites Hevites Jebusites Hittites Perizites Girgasites Amorites

Judges (1380-1050 BC) Because the Israelites didn t drive out all the inhabitants of the land, they became a thorn in their sides. Caused chaos. Eight of the tribes did not drive out the enemy in their territories. Judges is the history of oppression, deliverance, peace, and then the cycle repeats.

The Israelites were oppressed by the Caananites, Moabites, Midianites, Ammonites and Philistines. When they were oppressed, they cried out to God and He sent a deliver to them. There was peace for awhile, until they were oppressed again. Deborah, Gideon and Samson were three of the deliverers that God used.

Ruth In the midst of the chaos of the period of the Judges, the beautiful story of Ruth, a Gentile Moabitess, takes place. Because of her devotion to her Jewish mother-in-law, and her conversion to the God of Abraham, she came into the lineage of King David, and Messiah Jesus.

Joshua, Judges and Ruth Closing of this period of the Judges: Civil war between tribes and Benjamin. Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. We are now at 1050 BC

1 & 2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles The United Kingdom Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon Samuel prophet who led the nation and then anointed Saul as king. Saul first King of Israel; became prideful and jealous. Reigned 40 years (1050-1010 BC) David Anointed by Samuel to become King when Saul rebelled. Wrote many of the Psalms. Reigned 40 years (1010-970 BC) Solomon David s son who built the Temple in Jerusalem. Wrote some of the Proverbs, Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes. Reigned 40 years 970-930 BC)

1 & 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles The Divided Kingdom Joel, Isaiah, Hosea, Micah, Amos, Jonah, Hosea, Nahum, Zephaniah, Jeremiah, Habakkuk, Obadiah Rehoboam son of Solomon became King. He made life harder for the Israelites by raising their taxes unbearably. Jeroboam led a revolt that divided the Kingdom. The Northern tribes joined with Jeroboam. The southern tribes joined with Rehoboam. The northern tribes are referred to as Israel. The southern tribes are referred to as Judah.

The southern two tribes, Judah and Benjamin, were led by Rehoboam. The northern 10 tribes were led by Jeroboam. Jeroboam didn t want his people going to Jerusalem to worship, so he set up two golden calves. Jeroboam became the sad standard for the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

The Divided Kingdom lasted from 930 to 722 BC, 208 years All the Kings of the Northern Kingdom (Israel) were evil. God, in His great mercy and love, sent prophets to them telling them to repent and return to God. Some of the prophets to the Northern Kingdom were Jehu, Elijah, Elisha, Amos, Jonah, Hosea. In 732 BC the Assyrians took the tribal area of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh captive to Mesopotamia and demanded tribute from the remaining tribes. In 722 BC Israel refused to continue paying tribute and Assyria attacked Samaria and led the rest of the 10 tribes captive. Israel s Kingdom lasted 208 years.

Divided Kingdom The Northern Kingdom - Israel Stiffened their necks. Rejected the covenant, laws and testimonies. Left the commandments of the Lord. Caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil. They were removed from the land. The land was repopulated with people from other nations who brought their gods. They became known as the Samaritans. (see Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28)

The Southern Kingdom continued until 597 BC The Southern Kingdom (Judah) had a mixture of good and evil kings. The evil kings built high places to gods and worshipped and sacrificed before them. The good kings turned the nation back to God. The prophets to the southern Kingdom were Joel, Isaiah, Hosea, Micah, Nahum, Zephaniah, Jeremiah, Habakkuk. Eventually the evil was so great that they had to be removed from the land. Jeremiah prophesied during the final days of Judah and watched as the people were taken in chains off to Babylon. Lamentations 3:22-24: The Lord s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I have hope in Him.

2 Chron. 36:15 And the Lord God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place. But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy. Judah broke the covenant Sabbath year every 7 years letting the land rest was not kept. Year of Jubilee, every 50 years, was not kept. Judah made covenants with surrounding nations. They set up idols and high places. They didn t tithe. They didn t bring first fruits. They failed to keep the Passover and other feasts.

Conquered, captive and castaway. Humanly speaking a failure. Divinely speaking a success because of the prophets, their writings and their instructions to us. Where there is no vision the people perish. When the Children of Israel departed from worshipping the living God, they set up idols who were unable to give them vision. They lost the sense of God s presence that gave them purpose. It not only affected them personally, but as a nation. They lost their national life, their moral values and their consciences became so desensitized that even the prophets couldn t arouse a response or reach them. When the vision of God is lost, then there are degraded ideals, deadened consciences, defeated purposes. EVEN THOUGH IT SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD S ORIGINAL INTENT TO COME TO PASS, HIS WORD WAS NOW IN THE EARTH AND DELIVERANCE WOULD COME AGAIN!

Esther, Ezekiel, Daniel, Judah in Exile Babylon rose in power until it conquered the Assyrians and placed Judah under tribute (605 BC). King Jehoiakim rebelled, leading to the eventual conquering of Jerusalem in 587 BC and to the Babylonian captivity of 70 years (dated from the first deportation around 606 BC). Judah s Kingdom lasted 344 years. Ezekiel was a prophet who had been taken into exile with the first deportation of captives. He prophesied the departure of the glory of the Lord from the Temple. He also prophesied the return of the Children of Israel to the land. Esther was strategically placed as the Queen to stand in the gap for her people and deliver them from extinction!

Daniel Daniel was a prophet in exile. He served in the courts of the kings. Given visions of empires to come. Given end-time visions He understood times and seasons and prayed for the return of the exiles. Even in exile God provided for His people and made a way for their return to the land!

Exile and Dispersion

Return to the Land Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi 612 B.C. 539 B.C. 536 B.C. 537 B.C. Assyria was overthrown by Babylon Babylon fell to Medo- Persians. King Cyrus (Persian king) decreed that Jews can return and rebuild temple. First group returns with Zerubbabel. Carried back items taken from Temple, built altar and began worship, kept Feast of Tabernacles.

Return to the Land 537 B.C. Started work on temple, then stopped. Prophets Haggai and Zechariah prophesied and encouraged them to continue. 515 B.C. Temple finished. Passover celebrated. 458 B.C. Ezra brought a second group of people back. He taught the statutes and ordinances in Israel. 444 B.C. Nehemiah returned with a third group of people and built the wall in 52 days.
