Bishop 26 Wednesday, May 3, 2017 Greeters: Linda Healy & Gene Jontry Lottery: Bayo Adanri & Todd Anderson Program: Club Business and Birthday Auction Wednesday, May 10, 2017 Special Event - Student Scholarship Luncheon Reporter: Art Drake Photographer: Art Drake Editor: Becky Goeckner Normal Rotary Club President Jim Rosenlund called the April 26, 2017 meeting to order and assigned Surinder Sethi to lead the singing. Gordon Bidner presented the invocation. Guests: Jean LeBlond of Libertyville, was the guest of Connie Gentry. They ve been friends for a long time. There were no visiting Rotarians. Gordon Bidner Connie Gentry & Jean LeBlond April Students of the Month: --Jessica Becker of Normal West told Rotarians she was impressed by our positive attitude and the use of the happy fines as a way to share the good things that are going on in our lives. --Sidney Whitney of University High School said she learned how important it is to seek out people who would like to serve, that we can do great things when we work together. --Natalie Alfeo of Bloomington Area Career Center loves Rotary s Four Way Test and our club s involvement in the community. --Joshua Jacobs of Normal Community learned a lot about Rotary through Google: our service events, tutoring, Coats for Kids. He appreciated the chance to soak it all in during our April meetings.

Natalie Alfeo, Joshua Jacobs, Sidney Whitney & Jessica Becker Announcements: Oktoberfest is still coming up. The club needs volunteers to assist with a sponsorship opportunity that goes with that. Our Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee s will be held from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, May 20 Every club member is again asked to sell four tickets at $5 each. Pennies for Polio will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13. Many thanks to the owners of the local McDonald s restaurants for letting Rotarians from the five B-N clubs ask for donations. Normal Rotary members will take up their posts at the two McDonald s: at Main and Hovey and on Empire. A sign-up sheet made the rounds. Normal Rotary Club members will hold an ice cream social from 5:15-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 for residents of the McLean County Nursing Home. There s a sign-up sheet for that too. Art Drake made a heartfelt and humiliating plea for help with writing and photos for the Spoke. His groveling embarrassed everyone in the room as well as Art. Art Drake Past District Governor Gordon Bidner presented three Paul Harris Awards. --Michael Steele, a member of Carbondale Rotary, has attended most of our meetings over the past two years as a student at ISU. Michael also has been active with the District Conference and with Rotary s booth at the ISU International Fair. --Bill Semlak received the Paul Harris plus five stones. Joining Rotary was one of the best things he ever did, Bill told the club. The idea of Service Above Self is a winner, he added. --Hank Campbell received the Paul Harris plus seven stones. He put in a plug for the Rotary Foundation and its Global Grants program.

Michael Steele, Gordon Bidner, & John A. Bishop Bill Semlak & Gordon Bidner Lottery: Dick Wagner won the weekly lottery pot, but he ran out of luck and did not draw the Ace of Spades to win the big one. Hank Campbell & Gordon Bidner Dick Wagner & Jim Rosenlund Linda Healy Mystery Host: Marcia Dennis presented the coveted $2 to Art Drake because he is so goshdarned funny. Judge Linda Healy reminded us that the Memorial Day Parade will be coming up Monday, May 29 th. Rotarians who carry the flags at the head of the parade are expected to wear a Rotary T- shirt with khaki shorts or slacks. See Linda if you need a T- shirt. Marcia Dennis & Art Drake With that, there were. Happy Fines: Gordon Bidner was happy about his grandson being recognized for academic achievement at the University of Illinois. He s in the top 3 percent. Hank Campbell was happy that Friends Forever has struck a deal to house the young people who will visit us this summer. Bayo Adanri was happy that with all the tension in the aftermath of the election, a member of Rotary reached out to ask how he was doing. He s proud to be in the family of Rotary. Carson Varner was pleased with his experiences with solar power. Bruce Bergethon was pleased to have a chance to remind Art Drake that it is possible to use a cell phone to photograph yourself. Connie Gentry was pleased that Normal Rotary s Coats for Kids effort has gotten some more publicity because Art Drake took the time to send out a press release. Connie was interviewed on WJBC radio recently. Surinder Sethi was happy that the District 6490 web site has been improved and Art Drake was involved in that. (This is all well and good, but Art Drake STILL needs more help with the Spoke) Drake Zimmerman paid a happy fine out of appreciation for Michael Steele, who, by the way, donated his former long hair to a good cause.

Hank Campbell Bayo Adanri Carson Varner Bruce Bergethon Surinder Sethi Dick Wagner, Ryan Fleming & Drake Zimmerman Art Drake is indeed capable of taking a selfie, contrary to Bruce Bergethon's scurrilous charge. Art is shown with Jan and son Mike. And Bruce is indeed capable of photo bombing, as he demonstrates here. Program: Rotarian Jason Chambers, McLean County District Attorney, discussed changes in digital crimes that his office deals with: identity theft, loan fraud, harassment and bullying. We ve heard a lot about cyber-bullying, but we may not be aware that many of the perpetrators are adults. Blackmail that is inspired by old and perhaps unwise Internet posts has increased. It used to be that Jason s office didn t see any. Now they see a couple of reports each year. Jason Chambers The bad guys are always finding innovations in credit card fraud and tax fraud, Jason said. Thought for the Day is from George Burns: Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city. Ann Ensenberger Dick Wagner, Art Runyon, Gordon Ropp & John A. Bishop Bill Rolley
