2 Fifth Sunday in Lent April 2, 2017 St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church 905 Mendocino Avenue ~ Santa Rosa, California, 95401 (707) 545-6772 www.stluke-lcms.org April Bulletin #14/ Year: 130 Words of Welcome If you are new to St. Luke, a guest, or an old friend returning, we want you to know we are excited to have you here! St. Luke has been serving Jesus in Santa Rosa since January 17, 1888. Please fill out the red attendance book found in the pew. After worship we have refreshments and fellowship in the Family Activity Center. Please join us so that we may spend a few minutes visiting. ~ God bless your worship! ~ In humble adoration, covered by Your precious blood, Lord Jesus, I tremble before Your holiness. Your Word tells me that You will receive me joyfully as Your child. Thank You for Your death and resurrection that opened up the way to You, Holy Father. With confidence and with thanksgiving I can boldly declare that You are my Father and that I have unlimited access to You through Your blood. All praise to You, Lord Jesus. Amen. April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Lent 3 He Chose to Invite Us Into His Presence HYMN Lord, This Day We ve Come To Worship LSB 911

INVOCATION 4 Fifth Sunday in Lent April 2, 2017 In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires are known, and from whom no secrets are hid, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. Humble yourselves before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness. Almighty God, merciful Father, I acknowledge my sinful nature and repent of my sins those of which I am not aware and those I know full well. I do not love You and other people as I ought. I am often careless with Your creation and heedless in choosing the proper priorities in my life. It is my intent to say and do that which honors You. For the sake of Jesus, grant me Your forgiveness so that, as one of Your redeemed people, I may be a fit place for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and may serve You in time and in eternity. God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith. In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it. Amen.

April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Lent 5 HYMN OF PRAISE Father, I adore You AGPS 94 PRAYER LORD S WORDS OF HIS HOLY SUPPER PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20 O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

6 Fifth Sunday in Lent April 2, 2017 and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. DISTRIBUTION HYMN Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Prepared LSB 622

April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Lent 7 SCRIPTURE READINGS Isaiah 61:10 (NCV) 10 The LORD makes me very happy; all that I am rejoices in my God. He has covered me with clothes of salvation and wrapped me with a coat of goodness, like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding, like a bride dressed in jewels. Hebrews 9:24-26;10:19-20 (NCV) 24 Christ did not go into the Most Holy Place made by humans, which is only a copy of the real one. He went into heaven itself and is there now before God to help us. 25 The high priest enters the Most Holy Place once every year with blood that is not his own. But Christ did not offer himself many times. 26 Then he would have had to suffer many times since the world was made. But Christ came only once and for all time at just the right time to take away all sin by sacrificing himself. 19 So, brothers and sisters, we are completely free to enter the Most Holy Place without fear because of the blood of Jesus death. 20 We can enter through a new and living way that Jesus opened for us. It leads through the curtain Christ s body.

8 Fifth Sunday in Lent April 2, 2017 Galatians 3:26-27 (MSG) 25-27 But now you have arrived at your destination: By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God. Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe Christ s life, the fulfillment of God s original promise. Matthew 27: 50-51 (MSG) 50 But Jesus, again crying out loudly, breathed his last. 51 At that moment, the temple curtain was ripped in two, top to bottom. HYMNS OF THE DAY A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth LSB 438 St. 4 Lord, when Your glory I shall see And taste Your kingdom s pleasure Your blood my royal robe shall be, My joy beyond all measure! When I appear before Your throne, Your righteousness shall be my crown; With these I need not hide me, And there, in garments richly wrought, As Your own bride shall we brought To stand in joy beside You. The Gospel Shows the Fathers Grace LSB 580 St. 3 It brings the Saviors righteousness To robe our souls in royal dress; From all our guilt it brings release And gives the troubled conscience peace. All Christians Who Have Been Baptized LSB 596 Sts. 4 + 6 In Baptism we now put on Christ Our shame is fully covered With all that He once sacrificed And freely for us suffered. For here the flood of His own blood Now makes us holy, right and good Before our heavenly Father. So use it well! You are made new In Christ a new creation!

April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Lent 9 As faithful Christians, live and do Within your own vocation, Until that day when you possess His glorious robe of righteousness Bestowed on you forever! MESSAGE He Chose to Invite Us into His Presence Hebrews 10:19-20 19 So, brothers and sisters, we are completely free to enter the Most Holy Place without fear because of the blood of Jesus death. 20 We can enter through a new and living way that Jesus opened for us. It leads through the curtain Christ s body. HYMN Away in a Manger LSB 365

10 Fifth Sunday in Lent April 2, 2017 OFFERING PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Leader: Leader: Leader: Leader: Leader: Leader: Grant grace, we pray, in mercy, Lord. We pray for Your kingdom on earth. Around the globe may there be an increase of the Word of life. May the Spirit s power be made evident in the Church, as it reaches out to all parts of the world, bringing the good news of sins forgiven through Christ to every place. Gracious God, in mercy, hear our prayer. Grant love, we pray, in mercy, Lord. We pray for our household of faith, for our families, and for our neighborhoods, that we may be filled with a sense of appreciation for all Your good gifts. As we are blessed by the care of others, so may we bless them with care in Your name. Loving God, in mercy, hear our prayer. Grant health, we pray, in mercy, Lord. We pray at this time for the sick, the shut-in, and all who this day are in need of our intercession, [especially...], that their prayers may be soon answered and that they may be supported by God s people with care in the name of Christ. Healing God, in mercy, hear our prayer. Grant care, we pray, in mercy, Lord. Lead us by the working of the Holy Spirit to do that which God intends for us to do, bringing aid to the poor and hope to the oppressed, working for justice in our communities, and being agents of care and concern in our circles of relationship. Caring God, in mercy, hear our prayer. Grant blessing, we pray, in mercy, Lord. As we remember with gratitude those sisters and brothers in Christ whose journeys on earth have been completed, may we be guided by the Spirit in ways that honor their earthly lives and bring blessings to others as we anticipate the eternal joys to be shared with them in the courts of heaven. Ever-living God, in mercy, hear our prayer. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Lent 11 BLESSING Go out into the world in peace. Have courage. Hold to what is good. Return no person evil for evil. Strengthen the fainthearted. Support the weak. Amen. HYMN Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus LSB 685
