PSALM 146

Psalm 146 1 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. 2 I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. 3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

Psalm 146 5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, 6 the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them the Lord, who remains faithful forever. 7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free,

Psalm 146 8 the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. 9 The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. 10 The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.

THE HALLELUJAH PSALMS - 146-150 PSALM 146

Hallelujah Hallel = to praise Jah = short for Jehovah/God

Hallel. In various forms this word means to acclaim, to boast of, to glory in. The word expresses a deep satisfaction to be found in exalting the acts and the qualities of the Person being praised. This verb is used primarily in the plural. This suggests that the joy of recognizing God s greatness is to be shared by God s people. Those who love God come together to rejoice in the Lord, and to exalt Him together. The Teachers Commentary

O, how wretched Is that poor man that hangs on princes favours! There is, betwixt that smile we would aspire to, That sweet aspect of princes, and their ruin, More pangs and fears than wars or women have; And when he falls, he falls like Lucifer, Never to hope again. Shakespeare, Henry VIII (Cardinal Wolsey)

3 Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

5 To whom will you compare me or count me equal? To whom will you liken me that we may be compared? 6 Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god, and they bow down and worship it.

7 They lift it to their shoulders and carry it; they set it up in its place, and there it stands. From that spot it cannot move. Though one cries out to it, it does not answer; it cannot save him from his troubles.

8 Remember this, fix it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels. 9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. Isaiah 46:3-9

Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it completely. Proverbs 28:5

The Hebrew word for justice is Mishpat and it s used over 200 times in the OT. It s translated uphold the cause, righteousness or justice

It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them. DEUTERONOMY 33:25

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God s wrath, for it is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord. ROMANS 12:17-19

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. Psalm 68:5 But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. Psalm 10:14

For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. Deuteronomy 10:17

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. Proverbs 14:31

The world needs many more humanitarians than it needs warriors, but there can be none of the former without enough of the latter. Eric Greitens

Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me, because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist him. The man who was dying blessed me; I made the widow s heart sing. I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice (mishpat) was my robe and my turban. I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger. Job 29:11-16

If I have denied justice to my menservants and maidservants when they had a grievance against me, what will I do when God confronts me? What will I answer when called to account? Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers? Job 31:13-23

If I have denied the desires of the poor or let the eyes of the widow grow weary, if I have kept my bread to myself, not sharing it with the fatherless but from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my birth I guided the widow Job 31:13-23

if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing, or a needy man without a garment, and his heart did not bless me for warming him with the fleece from my sheep, if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court, Job 31:13-23

then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let it be broken off at the joint. For I dreaded destruction from God, and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things. Job 31:13-23

For we are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. EPHESIANS 2:10

Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Matthew 6:1-4

I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:1-4

With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Micah 6:6-8

Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly (mishpat) and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:6-8

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Luke 4:14-21

Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. Luke 4:14-21

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. Luke 4:14-21

Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you, And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the Lord is a God of justice; (Elohei Mishpat) How blessed are all those who long for Him. Isaiah 30:18

Justice begins in repentance because we can t ask God to uphold just part of his justice on earth: Just bring justice to the unborn, or to refugees of genocide, or to the evil men and women who would profit by killing children in the womb. Or just bring justice to the men who traffic women into prostitution, or just to those afflicted by racial discrimination or hatred. Bryce Young (DesiringGod.org)

This is what evil men are asking for when they claim they re seeking justice. They think that justice is piecemeal, that we can separate the sins out there in the world from the evil that lives inside every single one of us. But this is not the case. When we ask God for justice, we are asking, ultimately, that God s glory be vindicated against every sinner who defiles that glory ourselves included. Bryce Young (DesiringGod.org)

The essence of grace is that God is not required to give it to us. If you ever feel like God owes it to you, let a light go off in your mind that reminds you that you have just mixed up grace and justice. RC Sproul
