THE CERTAINTY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE RIGHTEOUS DEAD: -

A Basic Daily Prayer Method

Transcription:

Psalms 45-46 page 1 of 7 Psalm 45 V: 1 The Psalmist declares that his heart is stirred, it s overflowing with a good matter. He s bubbling over with excitement! Our hearts should be overflowing as well, bubbling over, stirred up with good matters - because we re children of the king, we re saved! Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. He s saying I m ready to declare these things regarding the king, at which point he begins to describe Jesus, the Messiah. His tongue is a ready pen, a tool in the hands of the Lord. That s how we got the Bible. 2 Peter 1:19-21 19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. V: 2 He is fairer, he is better than the children of men, He is superior in every way - yet one of us. In the book of Hebrews, the writer demonstrates the superiority of Christ over the angels. Hebrews 1:4-5 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as He hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For unto which of the angles said He at any time, Thou are my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son? Grace is on His lips: John 1:17 Christ. For the Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus He is blessed for ever - eternally blessed actually. V: 3-5 Previously in Psalm 43 David had prayed:

Psalms 45-46 page 2 of 7 Psalm 43:3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto Thy Holy Hill, and to Thy Tabernacles. Here the Psalmist is sort of saying the same thing: gird on your sword, ride out, use your right hand, loose your arrows upon your enemies - and some day He will. Revelation 19:11-16 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He himself. 13 And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which were in Heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. V: 6-7 The writer of Hebrews quotes verses 6-7 in Hebrews 1:8-9 and he s pointing out that God calls Jesus God right here in the Psalms. There are those who follow the Aryan heresy, one of the earlier heresies of the church that sought to deny the deity of Jesus Christ. Both the Jehovah s Witnesses and the Mormons buy into this. They each relegate Jesus to created being status, describing Him as the arch angel Michael, in so doing they each deny His deity. V: 6 This Messianic prophesy is fulfilled in Jesus as He judges righteously, the Messiah will judge, wield the scepter righteously: John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. V: 7 We know this scripture to be fulfilled in Jesus as He s described in Hebrews 1:9; at the same time we have this general description: He loves righteousness, He hates evil - We re called to love what He loves, and we hate what He hates. 1 Timothy 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil. He was given the oil of joy above his fellows There is a joy that comes into a believers heart when we are walking rightly with our Lord, it is perceptible.

Psalms 45-46 page 3 of 7 Up to this point the Psalmist has been describing the Messiah, or in actuality the groom, but beginning with V: 8 the narrative changes and he s describing the queen and her daughters, or hand maidens as the queen is eventually presented to the groom. Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. V: 8-11 The aroma of Jesus, a sweet fragrance, standing in good, honorable company - These things are pleasing and desirable to our King. 9 The queen in gold apparel could be a reference to the bride. She s adorned in clothes or apparel that is of great value, that the King provided. Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh Himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with jewels. V: 10 incline thine ear; - take heed, listen. forget also thine own people, and thy father s house; According to the Jewish wedding traditions after the betrothal agreements had been made, the bride would remain in her parents house and the groom would return to his father s house and begin to prepare for the bride by making a place for her. When the Father determined, the son would go to get the bride, to retrieve her from her house. The bride was to be ready and waiting over this indeterminate period of time, she was to be watching. As she was waiting and preparing herself, when she heard the noise of the celebration, the trumpets blowing, and the procession of the son approaching she was to leave her parents house and run out to meet the groom who never actually made it to her house, he only got part way because she saw him and responded, she ran out to meet him. They then returned together to His fathers house for the wedding feast, leaving her household behind - now joined forever to her groom. So the instruction: 10 forget also thine own people, and thy father s house;

Psalms 45-46 page 4 of 7 Jesus affirms the same: Luke 14:26 If any man come to Me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. The king is looking for those who are wholly committed to Him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him V: 12-13 The king s daughter is blessed, the daughter of Tyre will bring her gifts, she shall be honored, they will look to her for favor. The King s daughter is all glorious within So many focus on outward beauty, but here the Holy Spirit is looking at the inward beauty. There are many who are beautiful on the outside, then they open their mouths and you get a glimpse of what s on the inside. So many that are beautiful on the outside, but oh so ugly on the inside. 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, (Holy Spirit) The inward beauty that the Lord is looking for is Himself, His Spirit, as we yield to the Holy Spirit of God, allowing Him to guide us, to walk in the Spirit. 1 Peter 3:3-4 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. V: 14-17 Speaking of the King s daughter - she is presented to him in fine garments along with her handmaids, they will be blessed. This Psalm starts out describing the Groom, fairer than the children of men. Then it transitions to describing the bride, and her brides maids. We see the preparation of the bride, then her presentation to the King, to the Groom to whom she submits. Philippians 3:13 forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

Psalms 45-46 page 5 of 7 This is a great Psalm but parts of it are a little difficult to interpret because much of it is allegorical. Trying to not to spiritualize of this too much - so we ll just leave it there. Psalm 46 Psalms 46, 47, and 48 are celebratory Psalms, possibly written by Hezekiah. It is thought that this 46 th Psalm was written after God s deliverance from the Assyrian invasion in the time of Hezekiah. The prophet Isaiah had been counseling king Hezekiah, the Assyrian army seemed invincible as they conquered the Northern Kingdom, then attacked the Southern Kingdom, eventually surrounding and laying siege to Jerusalem. Isaiah counseled the king to trust in God - which he did even in spite of the threats of Sennacherib. When it was all said and done, God wiped out 185k Assyrian soldiers in one night, miraculously delivering the people of God from the un-godly. So it s thought that this 46 th Psalm was written as a result of God s deliverance. V: 1 God is their protection, their fortress, their strength - they didn t lift a finger, they didn t shoot a single arrow. Psalm 24:8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. V: 2-3 Because God has proven Himself, because we have this track record - we will not fear, whether it cataclysmic worldly events, or floods, earthquakes, or storms - we will not fear. Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. V: 4-5 The earthly city of Jerusalem, the city of God - is a cup of trembling to the world, a focal point. But as one of the major cities of Israel, and a city that the whole world is interested in, it unlike most all the other major cities of the world is not situated next to a river.

Psalms 45-46 page 6 of 7 The heavenly Jerusalem on the other hand, the one that will be created by God in the heavenly s will have a river running through it, as this verse describes. Revelation 22:1-2 1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits The Psalmist is describing the heavenly Jerusalem to come, our true home. According to the book of Hebrews the patriarch Abraham knew that he was a sojourner, just passing through - looking for the city of God not made with hands. Hebrews 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. The Psalmist seems to be describing the same thing, the same place. Like the Psalmist, and like Abraham, we need to bear in mind that we re just passing through, we re not going to be here forever, we re headed for a better place. Jesus said: Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away. 2 Peter 3:12-13 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. We re looking for that permanent place, where we ll be with God forever. Because He is our refuge and strength we don t have to worry about or be fearful of the temporal things around us, we can focus on the eternal things, the heavenly things where God dwells in the midst of His people. V: 6-7 The Assyrian army was fearsome and intimidating, they had conquered all the other kingdoms before them, they made terrible threats and no doubt they raged - yet God uttered His voice and they were wiped out, because He is our refuge. The Lord of hosts - the captain of the Lord s armies, He is with us. Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? V: 8-9 The people came to the wall the next morning, they looked and all they saw was a sea of corpses, 185,000 men fallen, stricken dead by the angel of the Lord. It sounds like God is inviting them to the wall to check out what He did.

Psalms 45-46 page 7 of 7 Their weapons, their chariots were of no avail when it came to being at war with God. There is a prophetic element to these verses looking forward to the millennial where the weapons of war are destroyed, there are no more wars, where righteousness is enforced. V: 10-11 God seems to respond: Be still and know that I am God: being still means not moving, not reacting, not trying to do something or to fix it ourselves. It is being still is being at peace, allowing God to do what God is going to do. Hezekiah prayed: 2 Kings 19:19 Now therefore, O Lord out God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord God, even Thou only. God is exalted among the heathen when He is victorious over them and they fear Him. Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? A big part of why we can be still is the understanding that He is with us, that He is our refuge and strength, just as was declared at the beginning of this Psalm. VV:1-2 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear Ref.Psalm.045-047
