THE BOOK OF ISAIAH THE GOD OF OUR SALVATION ISAIAH CHAPTER 49:1-26 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER WN-702 DECEMBER 27, 2017 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: The Servant Messiah Discovering the Salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Prophecies of Isaiah SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Israel, Jesus Christ, Servant, Messiah, King, Salvation Introduction to the Text; Isaiah 49:1-7 We enter now into one of the crowning arguments, not only found in the book of Isaiah, but in the whole of the Bible. From this chapter 49 out to chapter 53, The Lord begins to reveal to us the Ministry of His servant. Here in chapter 49 you will recognize the introduction to the fact that God s Messiah would first-come as a servant King, rather than a political deliverer. Philippians 2:5-11 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Servant Messiah 1.) He performs all of God s will vs. 1-2 Isaiah 49:1-2 1 Listen, O coastlands, to Me, and take heed, you nations from afar! The Lord has called Me from the womb; from the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name. 2 And He has

made My mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, and made Me a polished shaft; in His quiver - He has hidden Me. There is the Servant-Warrior aspect of the Messiah s calling Verse 1a Listen, O coastlands, to Me, and take heed, you nations from afar! The Message from the Prophets Is the key for any Jew or Gentile for recognizing who the messiah is. If you ask a Jew today Why do you not believe that Jesus is the Christ? They will tell you that; #1 Jesus did nothing to defeat the Roman Empire and to establish God s Kingdom Age on earth. #2 After 2,000 years have passed since you guys have said Jesus is Lord, what has His followers accomplished on earth? - nothing But this is what they failed to learn... Verse 1b The Lord has called Me from the womb; from the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name The Lord has called Me from the womb; from the matrix. These verses are ringing with New Testament tones and here is a perfect example of that... Luke 1:30-31 Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. The Lord has called Me Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. Proverbs 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son s name, if you know? The Lord has called Me Luke 4:16-21 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the

prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. Verse 2a And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; Hebrews 4:12-13 For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His (the word) sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Revelation 1:16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, Revelation 19:11-15 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it (His word) He should strike the nations. The Book of Ephesians 6:17 says that The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; Verse 2b In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, He has made Me a polished shaft; (a pure arrow = righteousness) In His quiver (deliveries, word, prophets) He has hidden Me. This hidden has the implication that it is God Himself that is orchestrating the (keep in waiting, the concealment until the appointed time) Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth (dispatched, revealed, unveiled) His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law,

The Servant Messiah 2.) He serves all who acknowledge Him vs. 3-4 Isaiah 49:3-4 3 And He said to me (or Me this is debated by Hebrew scholars) You are My servant, O Israel, (Prince of God - - referring to Israel or Christ is debated) In whom I will be glorified. Did the Servant Messiah Fail because His own rejected Him? 4a Then I said (to Him), I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain; Did the Servant Messiah Fail because His own rejected Him? a glimpse into the humanity of and the incarnation of the Messiah. this is a human-expression of emotion and grief regarding the rejection of the Messiah by His chosen people. John 1:10-11 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. Isaiah 53:1-3 Who has believed our report? and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? :2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Romans 11:11-15 I say then, have they (the Jews) stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. 12 Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! :13 For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14 if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. 15 For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? Verse 4b 4b yet surely my (this my is debated by Hebrew scholars over whether it refers to Israel or Messiah) just reward is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

Psalm 2:7-8 I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, Genesis 3:15 I will put enmity (warfare) between you (Satan) and the woman (Eve and her offspring), and between your seed and her Seed; (Messiah) He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel. Genesis 22:18 In your seed (Abraham) all the NATIONS of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice. Psalm 22:27-28 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the NATIONS shall worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the Lord s, And He rules over the NATIONS. Psalm 86:9-10 All NATIONS whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, and (they) shall glorify Your name. 10 For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God. Isaiah 11:10 In That Day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the GENTILES shall seek Him, Isaiah 60:3 The GENTILES shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. Malachi 1:11 From the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the GENTILES; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the NATIONS, Says the Lord of hosts. Acts 15:7-9 And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the GENTILES should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, 9 and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Galatians 3:13-14 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree ), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the GENTILES in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Romans 9:24-25 Even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the GENTILES? :25 As He says also in Hosea: I will call THEM My people, who were not My people, and her beloved, who was not beloved. 26 And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, You are not My people, there they shall be called sons of the living God. Revelation 7:9-10 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all NATIONS, TRIBES, PEOPLES, and TONGUES, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb! Verse 4c My just reward is with the Lord, and my work - with my God. meaning; Jesus always said and did only and exactly what His Father told Him to do. He lived to do His will. The Servant Messiah 3.) He re-gathers all His people from afar vs. 5-7 Verse 5 And now the Lord says, Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob (the rebel) back to Him, so that Israel is gathered to Him...(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and My God shall be My strength), Verse 6 :6 Indeed He says, It is too small a thing(there is more to Your mission) that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; John 12:32-33 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself. 33 This He said, signifying by what death (mode, manner) He would die. Verse 6b I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, that You should be My Salvation to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 9:1-2 Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, as when at first He lightly esteemed the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward

more heavily oppressed her, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined. Luke 2:25-32 Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: 29 Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation 31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel. The Ministry of Paul and Barnabas Acts 13:14-38 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. 15 And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. :16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He brought them out of it. 18 Now for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness. 19 And when He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land to them by allotment. :20 After that He gave them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. 21 And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will. 23 From this man s seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior Jesus 24 after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose. :26 Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. 27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. 28 And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. 29 Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. 30 But God raised Him from the dead. 31 He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. 32 And we declare to you glad tidings - that promise which was made to the fathers. 33 God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 34 And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: I will give you the sur mercies of David. 35

Therefore He also says in another Psalm: You will not allow Your Holy On to see corruption :36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; 37 but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; 39 and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: 41 Behold, you despisers, marvel and perish! For I work a work in your days, a work which you will by no means believe, though one were to declare it to you. :42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the GENTILES begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. :44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us: I have set you as a light to the GENTILES, That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth. :48 Now when the GENTILES heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. :49 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. Verse 7 7 Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, to Him whom man despises, to Him whom the nation abhors, to the Servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, Princes also shall worship, Because of the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel; He has chosen You. to the Servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, Princes also shall worship, In the future, Rulers and Kings will bow before the Lord Jesus. Isaiah 52:15 So shall He sprinkle (with atoning blood) many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths (to be in utter awe and reverence) at Him; For what had not been told them - they shall see, And what they had not heard - they shall consider.
