1. Purpose of the teaching Back to the Contents page A perception exists that you give Satan glory when you speak about him or try to learn more about him. The real question here is: What is your motive for speaking about him and wanting to learn more about him? Remember that he is the master deceiver and he wants people to think that they give him glory when they speak about him. In this manner people are left ignorant to his methods and wiles. The knowledge that is being shared here is not to bring him glory in any way, but rather to expose him, his hierarchy and his works. Because so many have been led by the fear of bringing glory to Satan by speaking about him, the downfall of many Christians has occurred. My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6 Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed Him, If you abide in My word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. They answered Him, We are Abrahams descendants and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say You will be made free? Jesus answered them, Most assured, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave to sin. John 8:31-34 You cannot recognise him if you cannot recognise his works and you cannot withstand an attack if you don t know what it looks like, how it comes or what the weaknesses are of your enemy. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 lest Satan should get an advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices. II Corinthians 2:11 Remember that Satan would love for you to remain in the dark as to his plans and modus operandi because then he can carry on with his things without any resistance. No matter what the Bible says about the end, it Copyright El Qana Ministries www.elqana.com Page 3

also says that it is our responsibility to withstand the devil and take up our weapons of warfare and stand in the day of battle. SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 4 of 27

2. Unveiling Satan Who is Satan and where does he come from? What does Jesus say about Satan? Back to the Contents page a) Who is Satan & where does he come from? The nature of God is threefold; i.e. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. In Heaven God has perfect order and part of this order is the hierarchy of the angels / ministering spirits. We read in various scriptures of the details of the hierarchy and the angels, such as Gabriel (Daniel 8:16-27, Daniel 9:21-27, Luke 1:11-22 & 26-38, Luke 1:19) and Michael (Daniel 10:13-21, Jude 9, Rev 12:7-9). Lucifer was the anointed cherub (an angel if the highest order) who was created by God. He used to bring the praises and music before God. He dwelt forever in the presence of the Lord. His name means son of the morning / morning star and he was also known as an angel of light and, at times, he still appears in this form. You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day that you were created You were the anointed cherub who covers... Ezekiel 28:12-19 Copyright El Qana Ministries www.elqana.com Page 5

Lucifer s sin was one of pride. He chose to exalt himself above God. He wanted to be like God, yet independent from Him. In Isaiah 14: 13&14 we read about Lucifer s I will statements. For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. Isaiah 14:13&14 Because of this rebellion, he was cast out of the presence of God and his name was changed to Satan, which means adversary. That is exactly what he is now. He is the adversary of God and, as such, is your adversary too if you are a born-again child of God. Some important facts about Satan: His position i. He was the head angel head over all the music and he still uses the music of today to lead people astray and this includes the modern gospel rock ii. He is a fallen angel Isaiah 14:12, Ezekiel 28:11-19, Isaiah 24:21, Job 4:18 His demise SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 6 of 27

i. He was cast out of Heaven to the earth Revelation 12:7-9 His main characteristic is PRIDE He came to steal, kill and destroy John 10:10 His strategy i. To mislead He does not tell out-and-out lies, but instead he misleads by: - distorting your view - sowing doubt - suggesting alternatives to God s word / instruction - getting one to rely on one s own instincts instead of God s Word His goal i. To bring disrepute to God and His creation ii. To destroy the children of God (Revelation 12:11-17) He is the accuser of Christians before God He can take on 999 different forms (shape-shifting) The following facts are known about Satan and his demise: Satan is head over all the fallen angels (Matthew 25:41) and will be cast into the everlasting fire Revelation 12 tells us: i. He stands against God and His creation ii. He is defeated by the angel, Michael, and his angels, before being cast out of heaven iii. He was cast down to the earth iv. He hates the children of God v. He wages war with those who believe and confess Jesus as the Son of God who came in the flesh, died and rose again, ascended into Heaven and is now seated at the right hand of God. b) What does Jesus say about Satan? i. Jesus calls Satan a murderer and a liar. SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 7 of 27

Why do you now understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. John 8:43 & 44 ii. He says that Satan is the head of the evil / dark kingdom. Then He will say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels Matthew 25:41 iii. Satan is the ruler of the kingdoms of the world Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him. All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours. And Jesus answered and said to him, Get behind me Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve. Luke 4:5-8 In this scripture, you can see that (1) Satan was indeed given authority over the kingdoms of this world, and (2) Jesus never debated the fact. SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 8 of 27

3. Unveiling man Who is man? The fall of man Consequences of the fall What was Jesus example? What does Jesus expect of me? Back to the Contents page a) Who is man? As discussed previously, we know that God consists of the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. When God created man, He wanted to make man like Him. Then God said, Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness Genesis 1:26a This image of God was not His physical appearance, but rather as an entity with 3 parts as Himself. He, thus, made man with a spirit, body and soul. Copyright El Qana Ministries www.elqana.com Page 9

i. Spirit:- your spiritual part is inhabited by the Holy Spirit if we are born-again Christians. ii. Soul:- your mind, emotions and will iii. Body:- your physical body. We will be given our heavenly bodies when Jesus comes again to take us up to Him. And the Lord formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 In Exodus 20, God gave Moses the 10 commandments on the tablets of stone for the people so that they would know the law of God. With these tablets came the knowledge of sin and so also the responsibility to be taken for sinning. Later on in the Old Testament, the prophet Jeremiah was given the word from God concerning the new covenant which He would make with us, His children, in Jeremiah 31. But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people...for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more Jeremiah 31:33 & 34 And once we have lived out our lives here on earth, we will be re-united with our Lord in spirit because He is spirit. Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7 So now you can see that we were created by God and He breathed His Spirit into us to give us life. When we die, our fleshly bodies will return to the earth from which they were made and our spirits will return to God who SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 10 of 27

gave it to us. From this you can also see the spirit is eternal and the body is mortal. b) The fall of man In the beginning, God created Adam and Eve and they dwelt with Him in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 3 tells us all about how man managed to separate himself from God s presence and begin the long struggle to return to that place in the presence of the Almighty God. In short the details of man s fall are as follows: Satan approaches Eve, a part of God s good creation Satan misleads Eve by making her aware of the ONE restriction God placed on the them and the Garden of Eden the tree of the knowledge of good and evil Satan leads Eve into temptation by questioning God s word and suggesting an alternative she will be like God, knowing good and evil For God knows that in the day that you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3:5 Eve then rebelled against God by disobeying His instructions and falling into the same sin of pride as the devil himself fell into. God shows mercy towards His creation, man, by allowing them to live but they did have to bare the consequences of the curses He placed on them. To the woman He said: I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire will be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. Then to Adam He said, Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it : Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it will bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; For dust you are, and to dust you shall return. Genesis 3:16-19 SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 11 of 27

c) The consequences of the fall Spiritual death of man the removal of the tree of life and the lifegiving presence of God Where man once experienced joy in the presence of God, this is changed to a fear of God and fleeing from His presence. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8 The ground is cursed until the revealing of the sons of God. One transgression led to the judgment of all men. Physical death and inherited sin become realities d) What was Jesus example If we are to have any person as an example of how we should live our lives, Jesus is the perfect one. Not only is He the Son of God, but He also came to Earth to become flesh and dwell among us. This He did so that we would have the perfect example and the yard-stick by which to measure our lives. Let s take a closer look at some of the things He did which we should also do. i. He was baptised before He started His ministry. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptised by him. And John tried to prevent Him saying, I need to be baptised by You, and are You coming to me? But Jesus answered and said to him, Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he allowed Him. Matthew 3:13-15 This event in Jesus life was so important to God that it is the only time in the Bible where God appears in His trinity. SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 12 of 27

When He had been baptised, Jesus came up immediately from the water and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:16 & 17 The command to follow this example is found in Mark 16 where Jesus says: He who believes and is baptised will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptised will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:16 ii. Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit As we see in Matthew 3:16 the Holy Spirit descended from God, filled and remained in Jesus. Let s see this scripture again and take a look at some others. and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. Matthew 3:16b And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptise with water said to me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptises with the Holy Spirit. John 1: 32 & 33 iii. Jesus resists Satan Jesus set the example for resisting Satan when He spent 40 days in the desert before being tempted by him. being tempted for forty days by the devil Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time. Luke 4: 1-13 SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 13 of 27

Remember that Jesus did not try to resist the devil in His own strength, but instead, He used the scriptures as a rebuttal to Satan s temptations. This in itself is a very important lesson not to try and resist the devil of our own strength for then we are sure to lose. Remember also what James says to all believers: Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 iv. Jesus ministry was one of teaching and warfare The first thing that Mark tells us about Jesus after His baptism is that He called the first disciples and then began teaching. Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Mark 1:21 & 22 At this same time Jesus also began His ministry of warfare and deliverance. Remember that this was always accompanied by teaching. Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out saying, Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are the Holy One of God! But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be quiet, and come out of him! Mark 1: 23-25 Jesus then continues to heal the sick by laying on of hands and driving out demons. After the incident above, He healed Simon and Andrew s mother and many others along the region of Galilee. Refer to Mark 1:29 34. All this was teaching and setting an example for us to follow. And He was preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and casting out demons. Mark 1:39 v. No other man of God, before Jesus, had ever driven out so many demons - Matthew 4:24, 8:16, 28, 9:33, 12:22, SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 14 of 27

- Mark 1:27, 3:11, 5:13, 7:26, - Luke 4:33, 36, 6:18, 7:21, 8:2, 10:20, 11:14 vi. Jesus teaches about warfare and binding and loosing Jesus continued His ministry of casting out demons and teaching throughout the gospels right up until His capture and crucifixion. But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the Kingdom of God has come upon you. Matt 12: 25 28 He also taught us how to deal with the strongmen in the spiritual realm. These are the principalities and powers spoken of by Paul when writing to the Colossians. Or how can one enter a strong man s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Matt 12:29 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them Colossians 2:15 Jesus calling was already prophesied by Isaiah and Jesus confirms this by reminding the clerics that the words of Isaiah had been fulfilled in their midst. The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; Luke 4:18 and Isaiah 61:1 vii. Jesus made known the signs which would identify His followers Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He left us with a calling / commission and instructions on how to behave. He came as the firstborn among many brethren. Jesus brought in the era of spiritual warfare like it had never been known before and as His followers we must display the same characteristics He did. SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 15 of 27

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. Mark 16:17 & 18 These are signs of spiritual warriors! e) What does Jesus expect of me? i. First and foremost Jesus expects me to follow his example and to take up the weapons of warfare. He expects me to operate in the ministry He, himself, started. He who believes and is baptised will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. Mark 16:17 & 18 ii. Jesus expects me to walk a path of sanctification (laying off the sinful nature). Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. John 17: 17 & 19 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honour. I Thessalonians 4: 3 & 4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of Your lips, I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer. Psalm 17: 4 SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 16 of 27

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. Psalm 119: 9 iii. Jesus expects me to follow the path of sanctification in earnest without straying. Nevertheless, she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. I Timothy 2: 15 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: Hebrews 12: 14 iv. Jesus expects me to build a holy character through obedience to the word of God and emulating Jesus. To show our love for God is to be obedient to Him. Take my yolk upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11: 29 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done unto you. John 13: 15 But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: Ephesians 4: 20 & 21 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus Philippians 2: 5 v. Jesus expects me to be empowered by the power of the Holy Spirit For is you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8: 13 & 14 that He may grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, Ephesians 3: 16 SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 17 of 27

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; Acts 1:8a SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 18 of 27

4. What does Jesus say about demons? Jesus says the following about demons: Jesus teaches how to overcome the enemy Jesus gives power over demons and to cast them out Jesus makes it clear that believers should drive out demons Jesus teaches us how to bind and loose Jesus teaches us about the return of unclean spirits Jesus teaches us that the enemy s gates will not stand against us Jesus teaches us that there is only one King Jesus teaches us that it is our responsibility to engage in spiritual warfare Back to the Contents page a) In Luke 8:26-37, we can see that Jesus says the following about demons: Many demons can be in one person Demons can give a person supernatural strength Demons respond / talk back and do not want to be driven out Demons often cause people to live in dirty and unclean places Demons are intelligent Demons want to live in a body Demons fall under territorial authority they will not want to go into another strongman s territory for fear of abuse Demons know the Word of God Demons acknowledge Jesus and His authority b) Jesus teaches us how to overcome the enemy (Satan and demons) Copyright El Qana Ministries www.elqana.com Page 19

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; Luke 4:18 He who sins is the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8 c) Jesus gives power over demons and to cast them out. And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of disease. Matthew 10:1 And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. Mark 6:7 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name. Luke 10:17 d) Jesus makes it very clear, in Mark 16:17 that believers should drive out demons in His name. And these signs shall follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; Mark 16:17 e) Jesus teaches us how to bind and loose necessary knowledge for spiritual warfare. SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 20 of 27

Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Matthew 18:18 f) Jesus teaches us about the return of unclean spirits (after they have been driven out). When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, I will return to my house from which I came. And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation. Matthew 12:43-45 g) Jesus teaches us that the enemy s gates will be broken down and will not stand against us. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. Acts 2:34 & 35 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 1 Corinthians 15:25 SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 21 of 27

5. Christians and demons Can Christians have demons? Identifying demonic attack Back to the Contents page a) Can Christians have demons? From the first encounter with Satan in the Garden of Eden, we can see that his character traits rub off on a person if they stop to entertain him or indulge in any of his schemes. Just by talking to Satan in the Garden of Eden, Eve inherited the traits of pride and independence from God. These transferred onto her from Satan. Before meeting Satan, she was not at all questioning God s instruction about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, nor did she want to be like God, knowing good and evil. i. Eve rebelled against God and was disobedient ii. Adam was filled with pride which made him ashamed of being naked. iii. Adam shirks his responsibility and blames Eve for the sin iv. Disunity exists between the Adam and Eve Any person who does not belong to Jesus Christ, by believing and accepting Him as their Lord and Saviour, lives according to the power of this world, Satan. Living according Satan, brings bindings on one s life which can lead to eternal separation from God. And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses made us alive together with Christ Ephesians 2: 1 5 Those not believing in Jesus Christ and not living according to His will, are blinded by Satan so that they cannot see the truth. whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should Copyright El Qana Ministries www.elqana.com Page 23

shine on them. II Corinthians 4: 4 In contrast, believers confess and lay down the things of Satan and renounce his works. But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man s conscience in the sight of God. II Corinthians 4: 2 Fallen angels are demons that oppress people and try to keep them bound through the works of Satan. His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12: 4 9 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity. But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation The Lord then answered him and said, Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound think of it for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath. Luke 13: 10-16 or how can one enter a strong man s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. This teaching is an introductory teaching which leads into the teaching about the satanic princes, powers and rulers of darkness which is a MUST to be able to know your enemy and understand his tactics. Once you have completed the teaching on the satanic princes, powers and rulers of darkness, we will focus on spiritual warfare and living in victory over Satan. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the armour of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints Ephesians 6: 10 18 Know your enemy! How can you be involved in warfare and not know your enemy then you are already defeated! SATAN - What every Christian should know - 2009 - Page 27 of 27
