MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR From Fr. Gregory: Lent is a very special time not just for good works, but for examining and strengthening our faith. The renewal that Lent offers us is reflected in the Ash Wednesday summonses to repent and believe in the Gospel and to seek eternal life in light of our mortality. It is also reflected in the renewal of our baptismal promises on Easter Sunday. As important as this pattern is for members of the Church, it is all the more important for adults who are seeking to become Catholic through Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation. Adults who are preparing for Christian initiation through RCIA must pass through several stages of preparation. They often begin as inquirers, discovering what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and to practice the Catholic faith. When ready, those preparing for baptism become catechumens through a special ritual during Mass. The community witnesses their desire for faith and eternal life, welcomes them, and offers its support. Then, for as long as necessary, usually a few months to a couple of years, all candidates for full initiation undergo formal training in the Catholic faith. These preparations reach a climax with Lent in its penitential disciplines, its looking forward to the Resurrection, and a series of special rituals reserved for this season. On the First Sunday of Lent, the candidates are presented to the archbishop by their sponsors in the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion. What follows is a period of more intense purification and enlightenment. The Scrutinies, celebrated with the parish community on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent, support the unbaptized in their ongoing conversion from sin and response to the Gospel. Meanwhile, those candidates who are already baptized are urged (as are all of us during this season) to receive the Sacrament of Penance. Finally, the elect become fully-initiated Catholics at the Easter Vigil or at another time during the Easter season. This Lent, a whole family is undertaking this process together at St. Edward. Bunly and Ida Tea have spent a long time learning the Catholic faith and attending Mass. They entered the catechumenate, attended the Rite of Election, and are now undergoing the Scrutinies. Their young children will be baptized with them during the Easter Vigil Mass this April. Bunly and Ida will also complete their initiation through Confirmation and Holy Communion. We eagerly look forward to celebrating the fullness of our faith with them, having been regenerated along with them in the love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Lord bless you and keep you! Yours always, Fr. Gregory ST JUDE MASS INTENTIONS ST EDWARD Mar 30th 4pm Margaret Foley Mar 31st 10:30am James Polo Apr 6th 4pm Andrew Park Mar 30th 5:30pm Salvo Soriano Mar 31st 9:15am Maria Clara Cano Mar 31st 11:45pm Mary B. and George V.
