Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany February 16 & 17, 2019 5:00 p.m. & 8:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER The Word of God provides us with great promises as well as warnings. The greatest blessing is saving faith in our hearts faith in Jesus. But as we live by faith in this sinful world, we need to be warned against being concerned only with the things of this world. So we focus on Jesus and His main goal, that by His suffering, death, and resurrection we receive forgiveness of our sins and live in the hope of our resurrection to eternal life. Our Lord s words of blessings and warnings of woes seek to guide us to that heavenly goal. PRELUDE All You Works of God, Bless the Lord setting by Benjamin Culli The congregation turns and faces the cross as the procession approaches the altar reminding us that Christ leads us into the presence of God. PREPARATION Please stand ENTRANCE HYMN 901 Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty

INVOCATION Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Brothers and sisters, as we gather to hear the words and teaching of our Lord today, let us prepare by confessing our need to hear Him. Lord God, heavenly Father, we confess the sins of our minds, our speech, our actions, and even our inactions. We beg Your mercy and forgiveness. We ask for Your grace to fill us with faith in Your Son, our Lord, to lead and guide us through all our days that we rejoice in the new, eternal life He has won for us by His cross and resurrection. Amen. Pastor: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. 2

HYMN OF PRAISE 930 All You Works of God, Bless the Lord 5 Come, humanity, sing along, Sing, you people of God, a song; Priests and servants, your Lord now bless, Join, you spirits and souls at rest: (Refrain) 6 Bless the Lord, all you pure of heart; All you humble, His praise impart; God the Father and Son adore, Bless the Spirit forevermore! PRAYER OF THE DAY Leader: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. O Lord, You bless the poor, the hungry, the weeping, and the persecuted. Mercifully hear the prayers of Your people when they call upon You, and give us faith to believe that Your kingdom belongs to the humble of heart; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. EXCHANGE OF PEACE During this cold and flu season, it is important to recognize that some people are especially susceptible to the viruses that can be spread by contact and that some immune systems are very sensitive. Please understand that some people may choose not to shake hands during the Exchange of Peace, but might simply greet you with a verbal greeting, a wave, or a smile. WELCOME WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 17:5 8 (Trust in man or in the Lord.) 5 This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. 7 "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. 8 He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 15:12 20 (The resurrection of the dead) 12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 6:17 26 (Jesus ministers to a great multitude.) 17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. (continued on next page) 5

20 Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets. 24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets. Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE WORD 699 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Please stand NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. 6

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING Listen, God Is Calling setting by Anne Krentz Organ INSTALLATION OF VICAR ELLORY GLENN Please stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Leader: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Each concluding: + + + Special Intercessions + + + Leader: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Leader: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. SACRAMENT In the Lord s Supper we receive Christ s body and blood in and with the bread and wine. The two great blessings of the Lord s Supper are the forgiveness of sins and strength to live an improved Christian life. In response to the Lord s command we are to examine ourselves privately prior to partaking of the Sacrament. There are three basic questions on which we should examine ourselves, all of which we should be able to answer in the affirmative if we are to partake of the Sacrament worthily: 1) Am I truly sorry for my sins? 2) Do I believe Jesus Christ is my Savior? 3) Do I promise with God s help to live a Christian life? If you agree with the above statement, we invite you to the Sacrament. 7

PREFACE Pastor: Pastor: Pastor: Pastor: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS 8

LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. 9

AGNUS DEI If you wish to take communion in the pew, please raise your hand when the communion assistant comes down the aisle. When the wine is distributed, individual glasses will be offered first, then the common cup. Communicants may take whichever is preferred. If taking the individual glass, please keep the glass visible so that the communion assistant with the common cup will know who has already communed. Non-alcoholic wine is available in the center of the communion tray for those who have a sensitivity to the alcohol in wine. DISTRIBUTION HYMNS 741 Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense 10

Please stand PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS Please turn towards the cross as it is carried out of the church, and remain facing it until the hymn is completed. This symbolizes our following Christ into the world as we leave.
